I guess I should have added "if you can get away with it".

Everyone has some bad desires, I guess I was thinking what is it that stops us from committing those desires if consequence is not in the equation.

What is your opinion then? I was under the impression that the whole heaven/hell concept was based on the concept of mortal sins, which are based on the human concept of what is and is not acceptable. But I admittedly haven't paid any attention to religion since I was about 12 and decided for myself that something didn't add up, so I'm curious as to how you view it.

Because even if there's nothing after life, there is still something during life? If life is all you have, that seems like even more reason that you wouldn't want to spend it in prison.

If there is something after life, then why wouldn't you do all of those things and then simply ask for forgiveness and have your sins absolved. It's a two way street of equal stupidity.

Also, you don't have to be an atheist to not believe in heaven or hell, which was the original question.

    Agree. I hate that concept.

Agree, I was just wondering about internal moral ethics and what drives them certain beliefs of persons.

I'd argue it's a product of brain development in areas that allow for apathy and remorse, things like that. I'm not going to try to get into nature vs. nurture because I'm not a psychologist, but I would say, whatever determines it, that that has much more to do with a person's actions (as well as understanding of and opinion regarding the consequences of those actions) than belief about the afterlife.

Because I feel bad if I cheat someone. Has nothing to do with God or fear of eternal torture in some mythical fire pit. I feel bad because I know that cheating someone is wrong, theft is wrong, etc.

Fair enough for me. I was not looking for a pissing match, just looking for an opinion, which is all that my beliefs would be since it can not be factually proven either way to me one way or another.

I didn't think you were. I was just trying to explain and it's frustrating that so many people have the same question that you do. They link not believing in God to people being anarchists and immoral. Which isn't correct at all. Decent people will be decent whether they believe in God or not.

If you told someone prior to the crime they would get away with it, I bet 75% more crimes would be committed. The fact that you cant know you will get away with it, and the consequences you will face WHILE LIVING scare the shit out of people (myself included).

Also, I dont go around robbing people, raping women, or killing people because I am a decent human being and respect people and their lives. I have good manners to strangers etc. I dont think for a second there is a God, Heaven, Hell, etc. I just do it because Im not a dick. Has nothing to do with belief or religion.

This is the difference here. Some people are like the person on the left, others like myself are the one on the right. Just because there isn't an afterlife or some grand plan for our lives doesn't mean we have to be bitter, selfish, violent, depressed, pricks.

10:26 For if we deliberately keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins is left for us, 10:27 but only a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that will consume God’s enemies. 10:28 Someone who rejected the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 10:29 How much greater punishment do you think that person deserves who has contempt for the Son of God, and profanes the blood of the covenant that made him holy, and insults the Spirit of grace? 10:30 For we know the one who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 10:31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10: 26-31

Reading some of your posts over the last couple of months on several different topics I have come to the conclusion that you pretty much think everyone is an idiot who has a different opinion or belief than you, so it really doesn't matter.

Well that answers that part. It sounds vengeful and bloodthirsty, but it does refute my question.

Vengeance and bloodlust is bad, except for when God does it. Because he loves us so it makes it cool. Same with genocide.

I've read testimony of people that have had supposedly out of body experiences in a near death situation, and that kind of makes me think that something happens after you die. What that is, I don't know.

Way to take a stand and answer the question! Typical Lawyer response, lets generate more litigation and debate.

Gods justice is perfect man's not so much.

"Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, "I will take revenge; I will pay them back," says the LORD." Romans 12:19

Ah yes, my genocide is unjust. Gods is just. That makes it perfectly cool.

If man was created in god's image, why is he the only one qualified to take revenge?

He now sounds like a bloodthirsty, vengeful, egotistical hypocrite. And that's why I can't get behind Christianity.

But I'm getting disrespectful and off topic, so I'll simmer down and refrain from posting anymore unless con alma responds to my post from earlier.
