Piece of crap people, and how you handle them
-
SportsAndLadyI forgot to post this story when it happened a couple weekends back, I thought you guys would like it.
I graduated 2 saturdays ago from Ohio U in the morning and into the early afternoon. I then had to move out of my apartment and head home with my parents.
My apartment complex does not have a parking lot in the front (where our apartment faces), but rather in the back...and where my apartment room was, you have to walk about 5 minutes to get there. Not a big deal at all throughout the year, but when you're moving in and out it's a real hassle to walk there and back with all your stuff.
So there's a parking lot directly in front of my apartment room, it's small, about 15 spots...and it's for the houses right in front of my apartment. So my parents and I parked our van there, because it had about 3 of the 15 spots filled (almost all freshman, soph, and juniors were moved out by this point..only graduating seniors and summer school kids were still in Athens) and we felt it wouldn't be a big deal to park there for 10 minutes while putting the very small amount of stuff I had into my van from my apartment.
Well, we were finishing up and noticed a huge pick up truck was pulling in and it parked directly behind our van. I went over and there's a pretty giant man standing there with a tire boot in his hand, dip in his mouth, tank top on, jeans...if anyones ever been to Athens, Ohio, you know exactly the type of person I am talking about.
He goes, "this your van?" I say yes. He says "do you have a pass for this lot?" I say "No sir, we were just parking here for 15 minutes or so in order to move out of our apartment here. I felt since the lot wasn't full it wouldn't be too big--" he interrupts, "Boy, you got 2 options and listen to them closely: One, I'm gonna boot your tire then call a tow truck, you're gonna have to pay $150 to get it from them....Two, you can give me $50 and I will not put this boot on your tire and you can leave this lot."
I said, "how about I just move my van now?" He repeats my options like I'm some fucking moron who didn't hear.
After realizing this guy wasn't listening to anything I was saying I said, "Do you really want to be a dick about this? There's no one in this lot, I'm not obstructing anyone from their parking spot."
He basically got all tough guy and eventually my dad came over and asked him who he worked for. He said, "I work for no one; I work for me"
So we had to pay him $50 to move his truck so we could pull out.
What could I have done? I know I was parked illegally but it was fricken move out weekend! I actually thought my dad was going to hit him. It almost ruined my graduation, it pissed us off so bad lol not so much the $50 (although it was $50 we really did not want to give away..especially to a scumbag like that)
In hindsight, should I have called the cops? Can someone just randomly boot my tire? It's our vehicle (the van) but it's on someone else's property...but not his!
How would you guys have handled that? -
Con_AlmaThere's no excuse for him being an ass.
You admit you were "illegally parked" and you got caught. There's a price to pay when you get caught and inconvenience was probably going to be that price.
With that said, there's no way I pay anyone without credentials showing me they are authorized to do anything about it. -
O-TrapWell, I probably would have grabbed the tire boot and chucked it, then told him to get his truck out of the way so I can move the van.
-
coyotes22That sucks, but I wonder what the cops would have done, though.
Was the lot you were in, part of the campus? -
Bigred1995If he doesn't work for anyone then you should have just called the cops! Extortion worse than illegally parking, and if he would have had your car towed while you were there, it would have been grand theft!
-
sherm03I probably would have called the cops and let them sort it out. If the lot is a private lot, they probably have a tow service that is supposed to come and haul away illegally parked cars. If this guy really does "work for noone" then it sounds like he's just some hillbilly douchebag that was fucking with you. I'm sure if you actually called the cops, or probably even threatened to, he would have left real quick.
-
Fab4RunnerI probably would have called the cops but then again I do not know how the police in Athens operate. I would think they would deal with someone threatening and extorting people before they would deal with a van that's illegally parked in a lot that's not full...but you never know.
-
dlazzCalling the cops would've likely been useless. It's a civil matter.
Only good it would have done was if the guy were full of shit, it may have chased him off -

Depends on what you consider "useless"! I'm sure the cops would allowed him to move the van without paying $50!dlazz;809629 wrote:Calling the cops would've likely been useless. It's a civil matter.

The man was substantially larger than me and my dad
I told him over and over again that this is ridiculous and that I know you are just trying to make a quick buck...just let me get out of here, and your "issue" with me being in this lot is solved. Obviously I couldn't do anything about his truck behind me, however. -

No..it's off campus housing. -

They do. And we have seen cars being towed all year from the same tow company. I knew that lot was strict on cars in that lot without permits...however, those were times when the lot was full. This lot was not even HALF full. Even in my head knowing that this was a strict lot, the thought of being towed did not run through my mind ONCE because a) it wasn't full or even close b) we were only going to be there for 20 minutes, tops and c) if they said anything, we would leave immediately, it's not like we were leaving the van there and going uptown to eat for an hour. -

Well, that just sucks that you lost $50. But, atleast no one got hurt. -

The cops likely wouldn't have cared. as I already said, it's a civil complaint on private property, not a lot the cop can do.
No law being broken
this shit goes on at OSU all of the time. -

I'm 6'3" and 275 lbs. Was he THAT big? If so, I might change my course of action.

LJI would have told him to stop holding me and my property illegally and tucked my shirt behind my gun and then driven off

The cops would have told him to release the vehicle.... after checking his tow operator's license. He wasn't hooked to it, so there cannot be a drop fee. State law. -
AutomatikWhat a dickbag.
I had a similar situation. Had my car parked behind my friends, windows down, keys in ignition. I ran upstairs to grab two suitcases and piss. I come down and a guy is blocking my car prepared to tow it. I didn't even have the option to give him $50. He towed it and I was out $150. It wasn't hooked either. I could do nothing, we got into a heated argument and he just went on with his business and took my POS ride.
I then proceeded to get his direct phone number and prank call him for the next 2 years. He once drove to a Taco Bell in White Hall to get tow my 'broken down car.' -

What other kinds of shit do you know? Seems like a random law with which to be familiar.LJ;809722 wrote:The cops would have told him to release the vehicle.... after checking his tow operator's license. He wasn't hooked to it, so there cannot be a drop fee. State law. -

Im going to guess he pulled into the spot and there was a parking curb in front of him. -
Ironman92If the world would use common sense in situation like these we'd all be better for it.
The van wasn't hurting anything. Did he jaywalk across the street at anytime?
Screw Athens......I took the ACT there and was 30 minutes early and couldn't find a damn place to park (big shock).....so I got nervous and parked in front of some cop station.....figuring they would not bother towing it and just give me a ticket.....ticket it was. -

That's a great way to handle that! My kinda thinkinAutomatik;809724 wrote:What a dickbag.

you know that kind of stuff when you have done property management. You have to deal with douchebag tow drivers that work for you and complaints from people who got towed. -
O-Trap
I'm not familiar with the campus or its surrounding areas. If it had been either grass or even just a small parking curb, I would have maybe tried to just pull out the front.coyotes22;809726 wrote:Im going to guess he pulled into the spot and there was a parking curb in front of him.
But again, that might not have been possible. -
RotinajPeople like this need to be curbstomped.
