Oh great, now we have the bleeding hearts joining the argument. A random death does not cancel out the opinion of America's wars being unnecessary, and its embarrassing that this is the type of logic you are bringing to an argument. What benefit has Iraq given America? We got Osama, why are we still in Afghanistan?

Bottom line is, let's save these soldiers and bring them home. We're bankrupt, we can't afford it anymore.

benefits are nice, but salary is pretty much crap lol

I AGREE WITH THE END OF YOUR POST!
However, this is not a bleeding heart. I didn't know the guy....just read about him in the newspaper. His death is as unnecessary as all the other lost lives.

    It seems we agree.

It's really not. Military pay is like $20,000 a year or so. That's $11 an hour with no college education, pretty solid, also considering the military pays for your housing, food, etc. when you're on active duty. Let's not even get started on the benefits, which are the best in the business.

It may be 11 an hour if you are working only 8 hours a day.

I know in some weeks it was 0400/050-1800 6 days a week

Cannot really complain about the money and benefits much, but they have to offer what will attract people. Also, many will say it is all uneducated folks in the military. There are more college graduates than what people think who enlist.

I know my brother gave up a 60k/year engineering job to enlist for 6 years after he got his degree and worked in that field for a year.

yeah definitely not in the army. i didnt get one till i became an XO.

I know in our unit everyone is getting or have received a govt issued credit card, from E1 on up. It is only valid/open a day or two before you are slated to leave through a day or two after you come back. It is being used in lieu of the travel vouchers. I am not sure how new it is. It is basically used for travel expenses when going to schools and training. I do not know the reasoning behind them over the old way of doing things.

I know a few guys who have used to when they go to different training schools and such and then they only get the money reimbursed for legit expenses. If you charge something that is not authorized you dont get it paid and are to pay it on your own.

    Haha
For a E-1 his pay is $17,000 a year that is not that much money.
The military does not pay for your food. Each month you are charged $240+ for a Meal Card. You get a basic housing allowance if you live off base but if you live on base you don't get more money.

Do you really think we should have shitty insurance?

When you sign up for the Armed Forces, you know the risk. It is sad to bury an America but honestly, you know the risk when you sign up. No one is FORCED to join. If you don't want the risk, you don't join. Plain and simple.

What I don't think anyone is arguing that! I know I was not forced to join.

Noone joins...I guess we get the draft back!

Nothing is being pointed at you. It's just saying that in general there is an increasing expectation of entitlement coming from some troops as we go on, compounded by many people' willingness to give it... it's got to the points where if you ever tell any veteran no for anything you're the worst person on Earth.

With that, since it's not a draft system and people willingly join knowing the risks, it makes less sense than ever before to EXPECT entitlements. I have no problem with people thanking our troops in whatever way they choose, but it should never become an expectation that you just give them whatever they ask for, which is how some people feel presently.

There is nothing worse than a bunch of military guys at the bar.

I hate that some vets and active duty think everything should be handed to them. I am no better then any of the rest of you. Yah I am a Vet yah I lost my leg. Do I want special treatment fuck no I don't. Yes I can park in handicapped spot but do I? Hell no there are alot of people who are alot worse off.

I choose to be a Marine you choose to be a teacher a manager a contractor whatever it is we all have a job to do and we should all do the best we can. None of us are better just because of our job.

$17,000 a year is plenty of money. It's fair market value. There's no debating that.

I think you should have the insurance that you are able to afford.

Fair market value for an E-1? Maybe, since usually they come in untrained and with little to no education after high school. It's when you move up the ranks, gaining experience and knowledge, where I see the biggest pay discrepancies. Let's put it this way, an E-6 or E-7 getting out of the Army can make almost 3-4 times as much to go back overseas as a contractor and do a very similar job (security or vehicle/general maintenance).

Also, some of you guys are speaking in very broad terms as far as how you view military personnel. There are few people that I have encountered (4 years in the Army) that expect a "handout." I know a lot of people that ask if there is a military discount at certain stores, just based on the fact that so many places have them, but some don't advertise it.
DeyDurkie5;795241 wrote:There is nothing worse than a bunch of military guys at the bar.
Agreed. Especially, if they are trying to let EVERYONE know that they are in the military. I don't mind at all meeting other guys who have served/are serving and talking to them but when they are screaming and hollering about it I get embarrassed for them. Saw a guy singing the Army song really loud once, and I wanted to punch him in the face...

You wouldn't mind it if your opinion of the war we are fighting was different? did you mind it back in 2001-04?

It most certainly is. If the army can cover its needs with the current compensation package, and there are enough people willing to take on the compensation package, then the market is at equilibrium, therefore fair market value.

I don't care about the rest of your story.

Ha, because I agree with you on your point, that an E-1's pay may be justifiable, it is relevant, but if I extrapolate your point to another rank and show that the pay isn't equal, it is irrelevant?
    ok...

You are coming across as hostile/aggravated at military pay. Any reason?
  • Fab1b
Look regardless of how you feel about Military/Vets I think what Delta did was wrong. I mean these guys are flying commercial because that is what the Army put them on, no? What are they suppossed to do, leave their stuff over there? I hope Delta reimburses them for this. As a vet myself I am not looking for handouts and either were these guys, they just didn't expect to fork over their money for their bags coming back from war and I don't see an issue with that one bit!

Or even the Army pick up the tab for the extra baggage fee, that would be fine too!
  • Tiger2003
As a E5 I was paid less than $29,000 a year. Not very much when you have a kid and bills. Also 3 combat tours.

But I didn't join the Marines for the money I joined because I wanted to kill some mother fuckers and make a difference.

What's to stop vets from bringing too many things home? There needs to be a limit, it was posted, they disobeyed and now they are whining about paying the consequences. They feel entitled to something, and that be definition means they are looking for handouts.
