North Korea

Curious how the rest of the OC is perceiving the threat of nuclear war from North Korea. Living the Bay Area, I think my anxiety is probably higher those others as the bay area would be a likely target if North Korea decided to launch a missile aimed at the united states.

South Koreans are continuing to live their lives, so I'll take my cue from them.
    I'm not that worried.

I worry that American troops may be forced to die because of the conflict, but in America I don't think you have anything to worry about. If we don't shoot it out of the sky first, cyber warfare would knock it out of the sky. There are some decent articles on what would happen. This is a long one.

All they have done is bomb the ocean. Don't see that changing.

While Kim Jong Un is a fucking nutjob, I don't believe him to be a nutjob of the suicidal type.
  • QuakerOats
I tend to agree with all the above.

So I may be the contrarian here...but I am worried about the bat-shit crazy leader of NK.

While it would be suicidal for him to cook off a nuke header toward the USA or South Korea (as I think we would turn NK into obsidian), he has shown no inclination to covet life...especially that of his family members or countrymen.

He scares the crap out of me....he is just that crazy.

I hope that I am wrong.

Not sure if that link will work, but a Reddit user had a really great post about this.

Tl;dr don't worry about North Korea.

This. We've seen plenty of nutjobs, but most have at least some interest in self-preservation. Anything Kim was going to do, he's going to do regardless of who is POTUS or what diplomatic efforts they take - keep in mind Bush and Obama let the guy develop nukes and long-range missiles (not that there was much they could do to stop it).

I thought Bush's "Axis of Evil" line was over the top and inflammatory, but it didn't appear to have any affect. Really doesn't matter what Trump says, Kim is going to do whatever he does. Only China might have influence.

There is a small part of me that is concerned our defense and all of our training might not work (i.e. we don't disengage the missile before it hits the US), but overall not really concerned about NKorea. If they were dumb enough to launch a missile at us, that would be the end of North Korea as we know it.

I can see why anyone on the west coast would be more concerned than people outside of NK's range. Living in DC I am more concerned about a terrorist attack (especially in tourist spots or the metro) more so than when I come to Ohio.

Yep that's it. For some reason I was having issues getting it copied over here from the Reddit app.

My largest concern with the situation involving North Korea is that people keep comparing it to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Where the difference there is that JFK had people willing and able to tell him that he had a bad idea, and it seemed like the majority were trying to explore every option to stay out of a war. From all accounts (and considering Trump retweets stories based on anonymous sources and wants to crack down on other anonymous sources therefore lending them some credibility), Trump is surrounded by yes men or at least people that go out of their way to prop up his ego and it at least seems like some of his top advisers (including Bannon) would be advocating for strong military action.

That's true, DC is def a target, albeit from a different source.

As for missile defense, we generally can't shoot down ICBM's, even in watered-down tests where they know its coming down a certain path and the interceptor is supposed to win. So if NK fires an ICBM nuke, there's not a lot we can do, other launch like 50 back their way. Doesn't help me out if SF is the target.

let's get something straight .... There is no forced to die... A soldiers is dedicated to him/ herself, the call to duty and the love of country which includes love ones. Many on the OC that been sheltered can't grasp the fact that there is another level of patriotism, commitment and obligation. Soldiers know, understand and except the potential death but they live for a reason, purpose much greater than themself. ..

They don't currently have the ability to reach San Francisco. ...best case scenario is Alaska. The media is reporting that they are targeting Guam.

CNN can barely contain themselves hoping this is Trump's "red line" moment.

Yea all their coverage is war strategy and talking heads trying to make Trump seem feckless.

If we went into NK all their military will surrender and their leadership will run and hide. Kim Jung will likely sneak out of the country within days.
  • SportsAndLady
My fear with NK has nothing to do with them attacking the US, or any other country. My fear is that they're testing these weapons to sell them to someone who WILL actually use them against the US or another country.

Why hasn't anyone thought about the possibility that the North Koreans are trying to become rich as GOD by selling nukes to bad, bad people?
  • Spock
True. Isis could get a hold of a nuke

Currently I doubt the Norks have anything at this point they can put two and two together and get on a missile. They do have nukes and can deliver them WWII style. There is still a small window left open to prevent the Norks from having the ability to credibly target major US population centers with nuclear weapons. They will get there if not stopped by force. Question is it worth the lives of 10's of thousands of lives to prevent the US from falling into a limited form of MAD with the Norks.

You can't under estimate decades of indoctrination. Nor the Chicoms intolerance for a US allied nation along their border. North Korea is a natural fortress reinforced for decades. It is a place that saw one of the greatest military retreats in US history. Thousands of American soldiers lie where they fell and will never return home.
