GOP Healthcare plan

  It is becoming quite obvious the Republicans only plan for health care is to repeal Obamacare. They have no feasible plan to replace it. If they were smart they would work with the left and start tweaking Obamacare. Let both parties get stuck with an unpopular health care plan so they both can own it.

  It should not have to be "replaced". With a couple minor policy tweaks we can return insurance to the private sector and allow The People to drive costs down. The problem is BIG government.

  I agree with you QO. The problem is I don't see either side of the political aisle stepping aside. We are stuck with Big Government involvement and it isn't going to go away.

  I'd argue simply getting rid of a bad plan is superior to replacing it with an equally bad plan of their own.
  
  I know it runs counter to nanny logic and the invisible hand of govt....but sometimes the best solution is for Congress to do nothing - but too much stupidity and hubris for Washington to grasp that.

  Well, another swing and miss from the GOP on this thing. Maybe the l'il campers will get it right someday. For their sakes I hope so, since it seems like the billionaires that own them are threatening to withhold their allowance if they can't get something done really, really soon.

  Funny you talk about the billionaires owning the GOP, since it was Obamacare - written exclusively by Democrats - that contained billions in subsidies for the insurance industry. And after those subsidies sunset, carriers started dropping out of exchanges left and right.

  This and it's hilarious that people truly believe that the Government (regardless of which party is making the decisions... this is important to keep in mind) will always have your health or family members health in your best interest. Even if in some cases they side with your take, do you truly want a group of bureaucrat to make important decisions on your health or family's health for you?

  The one thing single payer has, is the ability to force providers to charge a certain amount. They can control costs by telling them what they can charge. The question in my mind is do you want them controlling the cost...

  Where the pure 'free market' argument breaks down for me in terms of healthcare is on this point. You can't make an apples to apples comparison from healthcare to other industries. I can shop around for a new transmission and if one shop is way out of line in price they will either fall in line or go out of business. I can't shop for emergency care (I need it now) I can't shop for medications (maybe it's brand new with no generic option). If I don't agree to pay the asking price for that transmission I have to walk, if I don't agree to pay what the hospital is asking for a heart bypass surgery...I die. Take into account I don't even know the cost going in. I need heart surgery I'm thinking of my mortality not "am I getting a good deal on this".
  
  Free market capitalism is the best economic system the world has going no argument on that. That doesn't mean you can just peanut butter spread it to all industries and expect it to work everywhere.

  I understand your point, and I don't have the numbers at hand regarding emergency care $$ versus non-emergency care $$. But if you had an HSA and you needed an MRI, my guess is you might call a few providers and make them get competitive. When 'someone else' is paying the bill, there is often no incentive to negotiate. Then again, most insurers, if not all, do in fact negotiate prices at various providers in their service area, at least to some extent.
  
  We do know for a fact, though, that government involvement will make everything more complex, costlier, and ultimately diminish care.
