Has Rush gone too far?
-
pmoney25This really shouldn't even be an issue. Rush Limbaugh has a right to say what he wants and so does Bill Maher. Rush is an entertainer and Maher is a Comedian. Is it classless and juvenile to call woman those names? Absolutely. Is it a crime and a something that should be a national issue? Hell no.
These stupid issues waste time and give politicians an excuse not to actually solve anything else. -

Why do you people get so lathered up about a man that you do not even have to listen to? Your worst fear is he is winning droves of people over with his words. I don't waste my time fretting over asshats that have no power over me. In fact I have the power with the push of a button to silence them.

So let me get this straight. Two statist congresswomen came out with guns blazing against Limbaugh and they are asked in the link to defend Maher about his million-dollar donation. They offer crickets. I'm guessing you took missed key bits of context, like he was probably talking that MORE wind and solar power is not much of a solution, that we need to tap coal & natural gas. I'm going to look over transcripts from today's show tomorrow to see if I can find what you are talking about. Rush may espouse some far right conservative views that could be considered (are) intolerant, but I suspect a lot of the "BS" claims are misquotes and taken out of context. In my admittedly brief exposure to his website I've not seen the sort of stupid/wrong statements like you've cited above.Bigdogg;1108989 wrote:Caught a few seconds of big tub of **** Rush on the radio yesterday. I used to glance over Rush's website on occasion. Like Maher and others, he makes the occasional ridulous or outrageous comment, but a lot of what Rush says is actually accurate and insightful. That was my impression when I read his stuff for a few weeks a few years ago. The liberals cherry pick the shock value statements to paint him as an idiot.
Rush is not an idiot. Neither is Bill Maher. Neither are many of these talking heads. But they cater to idiots as it often seems some of the most passionate people you find are also the most ignorant. Bill Maher rarely spits out accurate or insightful info. Rush has a bigger volume of BS with a daily 3-hr show, but on a percentage basis he doesn't come close to Maher. And calling Maher's "Real Time" a stand-up or comedy show is a joke. He's often not that funny (unless you're an ignorant liberal) and it's really a political talk show with some humor thrown in. Caters almost exclusively to liberals and the audience has to be damn near 100% liberal.
Claiming these guys are any sort of leader of their respective parties is about as ignorant as the people who gobble-up everything they say as gospel. They are "popular", relatively speaking, but the portion of their audiences that actually "follow" and are influenced by them for much more than entertainment is likely fairly small. Honestly, I think liberals might make-up the biggest portion of Rush's audience - they're the only ones that ever seem to think the guy is worth quoting. -

The bulk of Real Time is not comedy, it's political discourse. It's political commentary with some humor bits thrown in. Bill Maher being a comedian doesn't trump or invalidate views he expresses on that show which are clearly not intended as jokes. In that regard, it's a double-standard to write it off to humor when Maher says something that get Rush in hot water for something similar. I mean, is calling Palin's daughter a slut funny? Maher gets a pass because he's a comedian? No, it's not funny because it's not a joke, it's an attack and it's the sort of thing that gets Rush (like calling what's her slut) into trouble all the time.Bigdogg;1109100 wrote: Sorry, Bill Maher is a comedian. Just because Rush is a political talk show host doesn't bar him from attempts at humor. Putting aspirin between their legs is actually pretty funny, and it's also a bit self-deprecating because it's an over-the-top ignorant statement intended to inject a bit of humor while making a point, which it does rather effectively (but apparently many liberals aren't bright enough to grasp the subtle point and can only take a comment literally that was obviously not intended to be taken literally). If Bill Maher said it, people would laugh. But Bill Maher would never say that. -
I Wear PantsMaher gets a pass because as a comedian and being advertised and promoted as a comedic show we assume that they're saying things for laughs.
Rush does the reverse, advertises as a political talk guy/commentary person who says things that are ridiculous and bigoted and then tries to say he's a comedian. -
gut
That's a double-standard. Only part of Maher's show is stand-up/comedy. And, again, Rush is absolutely free to crack a joke. You're saying Maher has more free speech than Rush just because he's a comedian, and it's BS. An attack is an attack. When Maher is doing stand-up on his show, I agree with you. When he's interviewing a guest or discussing issues of the day, he doesn't get to hide behind artistic license as a comedian any more than Rush does. Rush is an entertainer, that's obvious. That's a pretty fine line you're trying to walk attempting to differentiate between entertainer and comedian. Howard Stern is an entertainer, and his show has all kinds of humor and bits.I Wear Pants;1109144 wrote:Maher gets a pass because as a comedian and being advertised and promoted as a comedic show we assume that they're saying things for laughs.

But let's go another example. Andrew Dice Clay got tons of criticism and was considered hateful, obscene, racist, mysoginistic, etc... He didn't get a pass for being a comedian, and he got it from both Repubs and Liberals. Maher gets a pass from liberals because they view him as one of them, and at least on Real Time he is. It's not much different than Repubs not chastising Rush. Big difference, though, is only Liberals are hypocrtical enough to call out one and not the other. -
gutWhat is it about Rush, anyway, that elicits such outrage from Liberals? If the guy is such an ignorant idiot, why is he even worth their time? Common sense says Rush does make his share of valid and pertinent points, which Liberals see as a threat. And like they typically do with dissenting views they try to crush the messenger when they can't refute the message.
