I also would not rule out a little bit of a higher tax on the top 1-2% of the state as well. In addition, to offset, I'd lay some people off as well.
CenterBHSFan;686000 wrote:What you're basically saying is that the governor should cave and Chamberlain his way into the democrats/unions good graces. That's absolutely the wrong thing to do, IMO. Hard lines are going to have to be draw at some point all across the country. Wisconsin has drawn theirs already. The worst thing they could do now is to erase the line. That would effectively be a "one step forward, two steps back" situation.
What have the dems in that state done, besides running and hiding, to deserve a compromise? They aren't worthy of their titles of "senator" at this point, let alone compromise.

Center, you're exactly right. Compromising here would be the equivalent of me saying "You know honey, maybe you're right" and giving my 2 year-old daughter some candy after she throws a tantrum in the grocery store.

It's not like Wisconsin Republicans are pulling parliamentary tricks (like budget reconciliation, etc.) and sneaking stuff through in the middle of the night to get this done (like one particular party did with Obamacare). If they were, then the Dems would have a right to be upset. But as it stands now, the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz thinks these guys are sissies.

The Democratic Senators should be impeached forthwith, and the "sick" employees given the PATCO treatment with extreme prejudice.

As the POTUS so eloquently stated, elections have consequences. Stop being little bitches and get your asses back to work.

Apparently so. Does she not understand that many of those tax breaks created JOBS that people now have? And without them, those jobs wouldn't be there, and so (1) unemployment would be worse (2) tax revenues would be less (3) more people would be on government assistance programs (the ones creating the deficit).

Those tax breaks didn't create any jobs seeing as the aren't in effect yet.

But she's dumb for thinking the tax breaks caused the shortfall when they aren't in effect yet.

I was listening to the radio last night and they played an interview from one of the AWOL Wisconsin politicians who said that they've already offered up enough concessions and that the ball is in Walker's court now to compromise and get the people's business done.

I didn't know whether to laugh or reach through the radio and choke the moron.

Let's get this straight....this clown runs & hides to avoid doing the duties he agreed to do upon his election to office and he wants the governor to stop playing politics with this thing and capitulate to their cowardly demands so the will of the people gets done? WTF am I missing here??
  • ptown_trojans_1
This whole thing is way out of hand.
    1. The workers take the cut.
    2. The governor puts in a temporary extension on the collective bargaining issue. Add a 1 or 2 years to it, with the option to bring it up later.
    3. The D state Senators need to get back.
    4. As an offset, the taxbreaks in the budget need either lessened or eliminated.

Won't the teachers calling off sick eventually run out of sick days? And isn't one of the senators Preggers who is hiding out in Chicago? Methinks the Governor can and most likely will wait this out and shouldn't/won't cave.

    I agree.

^You would think. Its just a matter of time.

Also in breaking news Tom Morello of RATM said he is going to madison to support the unions. Calls Walker the Mumbarak of the West. For all these people who voted for "change" in the 2008 they sure get their panties in a wad when their the ones whos lives get changed. Also the "the world is coming to an end" way all these teachers act and react to this is insaine. FB statuses have shown the real side of people these past few weeks and who can think for themselves and those who spew whatever they think is trendy. Teachers and non teachers alike.

Indeed, and it goes beyond politics....I'm FB with many of my old teachers, a large portion are very conservative and vote Republican and they don't understand why people aren't "supporting" them (beyond their tax-dollar contributions), yet many of my more left-leaning friends can't believe that we're supposed to feel sorry for people with 6 figure compensation.

    Very weird.

^ Right, it just goes to show that most people have no idea how their ideals match political thinking, and how these views change when they are the ones affected.

Maybe we can coin a new phrase instead of RINOs and DINOs (i.e. Republicans In Name Only, likewise with the DEMS), we have RUPAs and DUPAs (Republicans Until Personally Affected, likewise with the DEMS).

Just like how trustafarian limousine liberals suddenly lose their DEM leanings when they find out how much taxes they pay, the RUPAs talk a good game about fiscal discipline and government reduction, of course to the point it doesn't hit them personally.

I used to work with someone who claimed to be fiscally conservative, but socially liberal. Which to me meant she wanted all the social programs but she didn't want to pay for them.

Its called libertarian, but if she were one, she wouldn't want the programs and she would just want no rules regarding marraige, drugs, prostitution etc.

She was not libertarian. She wanted all the programs to help poor people, but she did not want to pay more taxes.

Hobbit - I would consider myself to be along those lines, but not to that extreme. For example socially, I don't think it's the governments business to decide who can get married. I do think, however, that social programs need to be scaled down, if not some of them eliminated. (same with military - scaled down, some eliminated)

OneBuckeye - libertarian, eh? Hmmm... might have to seriously rethink my traditional leanings!

    ...!
    Agreed.

    State sanctioned marriage is ridiculous.

We don't have the money to fund the social programs we have. When do we end them?

Great opinion piece on why this will not be good for Dems:

    http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/why-obama-and-the-dems-blundered-in-wisconsin/
For in the end, the images and messages tell the story. The showdown in Madison pits pampered public employees against hard-pressed taxpayers. It portrays union workers as an angry mob against those seeking orderly legislative deliberation. It paints Democratic lawmakers as outlaws on the run, undermining the democratic process. It launched a national debate about the generous salaries and benefits for government workers during a time of economic shortages. And it showcased school teachers who abandoned their children in favor of narrow, partisan political gain.

This is a bad unraveling of a political campaign.
Reminds me of the debacle in Arizona. When Americans saw Dems standing and applauding a foreign leader lecturing us while standing in our Congress, there were political consequences. I have a feeling people will remember this Wisconsin thing as well.

    http://cnsnews.com/news/article/two-thirds-wisconsin-public-school-8th-g

"Two-thirds of the eighth graders in Wisconsin public schools cannot read proficiently according to the U.S. Department of Education, despite the fact that Wisconsin spends more per pupil in its public schools than any other state in the Midwest."

And at the end of article many comments such as this one:
"As a former teacher, I quit in disgust after three years exposed to the ruinous place we call public education. Our school was full of worthless "educators" who could not be fired and gave not a wit for the welfare of the students - hell, they didn't even attend graduations, let alone other school events - couldn't be bothered! Last week at our school, the kids were passing around drugs in little envelopes - the teachers thought they were Valentines - the next day a 16 year old died as a result of their inattention. Unions prevent the Board from weeding out the deadwood and as a result, only the youngest and hardest working new staff are fired so the union deadwood can stay on the job and continue the downward spiral. Our foreign students arrive here the equivilant of sophomore in COLLEGE - its a damn shame!"

I rest my case; except for ........ the taxpayers are done paying for this BS.

A group of right wing bloggers taking the low road again. I could put up a piece from the other side but why bother. I personally think it will be bad for the Republican party to get the masses motivated to turn out in the next elections. The gap between the richest and the middle class increases exponentially every year. Even Greenspan knows that capitalism will not survive if this trend continues.
