Beast, I couldn't wait to get to the computer this morning.

Loar was a 1 timer at Tuslaw, I was the assistant coach with the great Ted Salsburg who was also my coach at Fairless when Tuslaw got their 1st State Champ in 1986. Cory was their last in 2006. 4 all together. My poor HS Fairless has yet to have one. Jack Leeder was one of my favorite Wayne county Champs. Also coached my son Cory at Perry the year he went to State at Perry and then left when we did. One of the most lovable guys ever in the wrestling community....ever!

Actually Bill Gaut from Fairless won a state championship !!

Tuslaw has a couple more, I think. At least Cory Nelson, I'm sure of in 2005 or 2006.

Triway may have a name missing, although I'm not positive.

Corey Kline wrestled for Mapleton and won championships in 1994 & 95.
Curtis Kline is the Triway grappler you're thinking of. He won it all in 1988
I have Nelson listed....Curtis Kline won it all in 88....but his little brother...Chad (not Corey) won it in 91 or 92.

We have multiple runner-ups and placers, but I couldn't tell you all those names from memory.
I have those three listed ;)

I thought Loar was a 2xer... Perhaps Roger Loar was a 3rd-5th his Jr year and won it all in 85-86? maybe.

Jack Leeder was a GREAT guy! I miss seeing his smile and hearing his laugh. RIP Jack

I think I had everyone with the exception of a Mr Kobilarcik from Wooster in the 60's? Maybe??? Not sure which one, there was about 6 brothers.....

OL Beast has a little memory left up there.

I wish you were right ! But Bill Gaut took 2nd. Beleive me I know, I was there and Bill is one of toughest wrestlers Fairless ever had! He came back as a assistant my senior year and was my drill partner. I have yet to ever wrestle a person that was any where near as Strong as Bill Gaut. He was a man among boys. 33 years later he looks as good as he did in 1979.

They had wrestling in 1979? :p
  • UncleGrizzly
He must of lost to Mike Scott of Coventry in 1979 or was it Jerry Burgy of Woodridge ??

Mike Scott. Some of the worst calls by a ref ever! Bill really got the shaft after physically dominating a high skilled Scott who also was quite a specimen himself. Bill stormed into the arens for the finals in the best Mohawk I ever saw..LOL!

loved the write up in the DR today. I noticed the sandbaggin quote as well beast ;)

Also Triway has had 5 state champs I think you guys got them right. So if Waynedayle pulls through on their 3 state champs they will tie Triway for most all-time! Maybe if only until 195 comes up, i believe Zach Zody could win it all.

Too bad Everett (was HWT his 9th and 10th grade years at Fairless 2 years ago, this year is a Sr. at Glen Oak) transferred out to play football, he could've easily won a D2 title for Fairless this year at HWT. Kid is a tank
  • UncleGrizzly
Everett lost to Sharp from West Branch in the Semis' @ the Dies tournament 7 - 2 . Sharp is D - 2 !!
  • Dtown
Had the opportunity to coach Everett for one year at Fairless.......Awesome kid with great character. All things considered hes only been wrestling for a little over 3 years (his Freshman year he finally saw the light and quit hoops to give wrestling a chance.....took a lot of recruiting lol). I look for him to be pretty high on the DI podium this year!

lol okay i'll give you that... but Everett has beat Kelbly who has beat Srock who beat Sharp in the finals! so the potential is there to win one at least!

This is a post I made on another forum in regards to someone talking about D-3's strengths.
With all the talk of who is this and who has a better that and how much tougher this is than that....Well as you get older and wiser you realize its all relevant to how you are enjoying and loving what you do and who you are doing it with not that you can win an argument about who's is bigger and better. I know a lot of amazing wrestlers and Multi time Champs that will tell you they absolutely hated the quote"Great Room" they were in and could not wait for their HS wrestling career to end and move on. I will say that its more important to love what you do than always proving your the best at what you do. For some that goes hand in hand, for others its not.
With that said this "Waynedale Run" No matter how it finishes has been a blessed and Karma driven run. The team chemistry, coaches camaraderie, and Fan enthusiasm and neighborhood pride has been epic and will leave a lifetime of good memories for everyone. With Zeb, Zane, Zack and Brendan all from the little populated Amish village of 300 people called Fredericksburg it would be a sight to see these guys come thru. The Street we now live on just announced they are planning a town event and street parties, I have never seen such community pride. The "Fredericksburg Freddies" the old original HS is back. A town that still has a black Smith, A little town where Amish buggies out number the cars 5 to 1 in the grocery store parking lot Wayne county itself and all the surrounding HS's in Wayne county have a unique love /hate relationship. Maybe the most spiteful rivalries and war storied opponents but when outside the county all these school root each other on like no other county in Ohio. Watching Norwayne win A football State title you would have thought every Wayne county kid went to Norwayne....I expect the same if Wayne county can bring thier 1st ever wrestling title home too. Special times in Wayne county this year...We could care less what division or what is weak or strong this county is loving and cherishing the passion and accomplishments of its Student athletes.

    Great post Falcon81!

We in Smithie land will be cheering on the Bears at State as they make a run for the title! The neat thing is there are some really good chances that there can be quite a few wrestlers from all throughout the county schools wrestling at State.
  • BearBoy69
Loved that post falcon. I need to buy a golden bear shirt for the state finals!
  • Red Rum
Northwestern & Norwayne represented the WCAL very well this weekend. Both having their best ever records at SMCC duals. Apparently, no one was pushed from the balcony this year either.
  • Red Rum
A big weekend in wrestling action and nobody has much to say, par for this course, I guess.

Congrats to the Nelson brothers on both hitting the 100 win plateau. I just heard, news travels slow to Cinnamon Lake.
Any other locals hit the century mark this year?

Congrats to the NWN jr high team. Reading the Jr High thread, it sounds like they were unspectacular and won on sheer numbers.....again.;)

Congrats to Grier on the lightweight MVW at SMCC.

The WCAL meet is upon us.
Predictions? Just kidding, I know--- nobody has any.
  • 1_beast
It has been confirmed that it is no longer a bracket tournament and will be run pool style.

    Northwestern will win the title.

Grier, Fortune and Beam all will be going for their 4th title....
  • Red Rum
Does this mean there will be no championship final matches?
  • 1_beast
Not real clear...there will be 2 pools each weight, with the best kids seeded apart, as they win their pool they will be moved to new pools, kinda taking away the element of any "semi finals". There should still be a "Championship" round with the pool winners, runners-up...etc.

Edit: The traditionally bracketed WCAL Champships are now being run pool style in the exact manor that this years Host, Northwestern, runs their pool style tournament.

Anyone familiar with that set-up will understand how this will be run.
