I know a kid, wrestled since youth programs, kinda uncoordinated, never really grew into his feet, so to speak, always one of the hardest workers in in any practice room.
I have watched this kid for years, pulling his opponents on top of him on his feet, forehead always glued to the mat, always a move and a half behind even mediocre opponents, kinda bastardizing every wrestling fundimental known to man. Sometimes you watch him, and just mumble to yourself, "what the he!! was that?"
    FR-Sectional- two-n-out
    SO-Sectional- one-n-two
    Jr-Secional- Disrtict alternate
Now he's a senior. Team captain with about a 50/50 record. He knows this is his last shot at wrestling with the big boys at District. Last shot at forever being able to say "ya, I was a District Qualifier". Putting on a look of supreme confidence this year, ya know, Team Captain, Senior, all that......but I can recognize the uneasiness and doubt in his swagger.

I'm tell'in you, I've seen him wrestle this year, and it's gonna be close.-------------------- Coach- time to pull out all the stops and get this kid to District.

always alot of focus on the State Caliber kids, ...........but Man, I'm really pull'in for this kid................Lucky for this kid, his HS coach realizes that not everybodies "State Tournament" is wrestled at the Schott

    You know this kid too?

I do!!! I really thought - if just for a second - you were really talking about a few of my kids!!! Given what we've had to work with (see your description above, minus the youth and junior high wrestling) the district tournament is a legitimate goal and a success if reached. Just sayin'.

This is what I love about the sport....right here. These are the kids that truly have their lives changed by wrestling.

Yeah, I see them...every year ...and the sport wouldn't be the same without them.

By the way....how the heck did this kid make the starting lineup his freshman year???? Is this a synopsis of cruiser96's career???

    "Coach I broke my finger"

*Ignoring that* "You need to stop letting him dictate what you do on your feet"

*after the match* "Let me see your finger now. Oh, you actually did break it".

I heart Con Alma and the sentence (question) of his last post!!!

Don't you know that the cut from 130 to 103 was too great for the kid in front of me. The other kid at 103 was 85lbs soaking wet! I'd crush him with one sprawl!
  • falcon81
They feed , wash, clean, cheer, hug , console, encourage, nurture, organize, drive, cry, love their little wrestlers all the way to the top or all the way to the bottom..They are there no matter what!! GOD BLESS ALL THE MOMS in wrestling!!

Gahanna has a KILLA hospitality room. At least, it was about 2 or 3 years ago. UNREAL spread. B-Dubs, Bob Evans, just about every food chain you can imagine.

    Lot of magic in wrestling-

I once saw a kid that weighed out of Friday nights practice at 0.2 lbs over.
Went home and didn't eat ANYTHING, didn't drink ANYTHING, ....showed up Saturday for 6AM weight check before the bus ride to the tournament....and said "coach, NOT ONE THING ENTERED MY MOUTH, no food, no water, no nothing, I SWEAR IT"

........as he got off the scale at 3.5 lbs over

Magic I tell ya, Black Frick'n Magic
  • Wolverine12
He's cute ain't he? Only problem is, he's got a little bit a Mississippi leg hound in 'im. If the mood catches him right, he'll grab your leg and just go to town. You don't want him around if your wearing short pants, if you know what I mean. Word of warning though, if he does lay into ya, it's best to just let 'im finish.

Alright! That's it. Who in the world let you into my practice room. All of you!!! You will be found out. Oh yes... you will!!!

If Olentangy Orange's hospitality room is anything like their food table for the wrestlers, it has to be the best. I've never seen such a spread for a team's food table in my life! Most impressive.
  • falcon81
Yes moms, take them away and our sport has zero fans! Wrestling moms run the concession stands, they make the T-shirts, they raise the money, they organize the banquets, they bring the coolers......wrestlers love their MOMS...they make it all feel worth it.

4x sectional qualifier stems from personally meeting, and having friends tell me about meeting, former 1x, 2x and 3x state champs. It seems that the further away we get from our "glory days", the better we were. Well, not all of us. Hence, my line. I make no bones about it. I was better than I give myself credit for, but I stunk! I was terrible. I'm not sure I even knew what a knee-over-toe penetraion step was! I knew a LAZY, cross-body shot and then reach for the arm for a dump. (Which is a TERRIBLE technique if you are middle or high school wrestler reading this.)

I've gotten better through learning what "drilling" is.

I agree the Olentangy Hospitality room was the best. Oh yea , you know there was some great wrestling Moms Behind that!!

I like the one at the West Branch sectional since it's on the mezzanine so you can watch the wrestling while stuffing your face with tasty treats.

Of course I'm a bit biased on that call and I've not really experienced many more hospitality rooms (maybe two or three other ones).
