They've been selling those for years, this is why the school is trademarking it.
I didn't realize that, and to be honest, I've never seen anybody wearing one

It’s been around for a couple years now. At least since the CFP win.

Our beloved alma mater is never shy about commercializing every last dingleberry it can scratch out. The place has totally lost the plot.

Lol one would think winning and making money... I think the hats are funny. People already hate OSU, might as well annoy them even more.

Even pretending to be a non-profit educational institution.

Not sure if sarcasm was intended here, but when have they ever "pretended" to be non-profit? You need money, lots of it, to fund programs throughout the university, and tuition and lab fees sure as hell ain't gonna' cover it--but football dollars do. Period.

How do comparable state schools without big time football programs get it done?

what "comparable" state schools (ie enrollment) are you referring to? all I'm saying is that comparable is a relative term, and there are only a handful of them out there--and ALL of them have big time football programs

During 2018, the university had revenue of >$7 billion. Of this, ~$40 million came from the athletic department. That's less than one half of one percent. I think learning and research could get by without that contribution.
My point originally was that OSU is ridiculous about extracting every nickel from under any stone it can find. Trademarking "the" is, in my opinion, and example of going overboard to accomplish this.

Without football, many large direct contributions to the university don't happen.

That wasn't what I was saying. I was commenting on the silliness of trying to commercialize every obscure thing associated with the school.

Not sure where this cynicism is coming from, but thank you for expressing your hyperbolic opinion, even if it's, as you say, "going overboard".

You're welcome. My cynicism comes from hearing the OSU spokesperson (some vice president making God knows how much) claiming that trademarking "THE" is part of the school furthering its teaching and research mission. I'd respect them more if they were honest. "We're trying to trademark anything we can that allows us to sell more gear."
