I legit have never looked at HBP. But Cobb was an asshole, so maybe him haha.

Yeah, I suppose when you include the pitching, Ruth probably has the edge.
Not quite the same as losing the years Ted lost — and pitchers did still bat — buts it’s like 4-5 years of his career not hitting; to go along with the actual great pitching numbers.

And, to boot, when he came back, he picked up right where he left off.

This shocked me, but he was only HBP 10 times once. Never 15.

Guy was tremendous.
Rickie? Thinking of guys who had lots of ABs and played forever.

Nope. Only hit double digits once: 10 HBP in '96.
As a clue, you're in the right era.
Oh wait, I know this one. I’ll let it go a few more guesses.
HINT: his famous teammate (also HOF) got HBP a ton also.

Nice. Yep.
Well, I'm leaving my desk for the day, so I won't be around to give the answer. Laley, you want to guess?
Alright, I gotta head out.
Craig Biggio has been beaned at least 15 times in a season 10 different times. And the number of times per season are ridiculous. The rest on this list were between 15 and 20 times.
Biggio:
22 HBP in 1995
27 HBP in 1996
34 HBP in 1997
23 HBP in 1998
16 HBP in 2000
28 HBP in 2001
17 HBP in 2002
27 HBP in 2003
15 HBP in 2004
17 HBP in 2005
The man has been hit by a pitch almost 100 times more in his career than the second-place HOFer.
Biggio: 285
Frank Robinson: 198
WTF?

It's like he turned it into a skill.

Brandon Guyer is his pupil.
Question #116:
We all know that there have only been four players to make the 40/40 club, with 40 HRs and 40 SBs in the same season, none of whom are in the HOF: Canseco in '88, Bonds in '96, ARod in '98, and Soriano in '06.
This one HOFer, who played his entire career after 1970, is the only HOFer to have had multiple seasons of 40 HRs and 30 SBs. Who is he?
(Bonds would be the second if he's ever voted in, as he did this in '97 to go with his 40/40 performance in '96.)
posted by O-TrapThat's insane.
One of the reasons I honestly think he might have been a better all-around player than Ruth. I know that's heretical to some, but damn.
posted by justincredibleGeorge Brett?
Nope. Surprisingly, he's never been beaned more than 6 times in a season.
Oh, Williams was most definitely a better player than Ruth. Williams is the best pure hitter of all time. The closest hitter to Williams since, well Williams, was Tony Gwynn.
There's a 20ish minute video on youtube of Gwynn and Williams just talking the science of hitting...if you love the game, it is a much watch.
Willie Mays had power and speed.

I agree with all of this, and I'll definitely be checking out the video.
My grandfather still gets excited at 91 years old when he talks about "the Splendid Splinter."
No slight to Ruth, though. To be able to hold records as a pitcher AND records as a hitter is absurd. If we include the pitching, I might give him the nod over Williams.

He did. Crazy enough, though, he hasn't even had one such season, though he was close to a 40/40 season in '56, when he snagged 40 steals and hit 36 homers. Again in '57, when he hit 35 HRs and led the league with 38 steals. Strange that his highest SB total in a year when he hit 40+ HRs was 24.
He's also not post-1970, but otherwise, he'd be a prime candidate for this.

Vlad?
Ryne Sandberg? Larry Walker?
My other guess would be Bagwell, since you were on the double Bs trend with Biggio earlier.
Post-70, missed that part.

Never got it in the same season.

Larry did it once, but only once. Ryne never got there.

Damnit. Well, I did find this on complete accident and wasn't looking for it to be a Killer B, but yes. It's Jeff Bagwell.
Bags hit 43 homers and stole 31 bases in '97. Two years later, he tagged 42 homers and snagged 30 bases.
Couldn't believe Bags managed seasons like that when no other HOFers did.

Non HOF but what Bobby Bonds was doing in the early 70’s....genes are strong. He went 43/39

Yep. I saw a few who did the 30+ HR and 40+ SB thing. It was weird seeing Bags, of all people, being the only HOF player to do the reverse. I don't exactly think of him as a base-stealer.
