Some analyst predicted that.  I think he said Metcalf wouldn't break 10.3.

Maybe he had a bad run.  And maybe with a lot of training and work on technique, maybe [doubtful] he could run a sub-10.0.  But he'd still get smoked by the elite guys.

It's apples-to-oranges, but Usain Bolt hit 30 mph on his record run, and usually the fastest speed recorded in the NFL is around 22 mph.

I think the size difference has to play a role. He's like 40-50 pounds bigger than a pure sprinter.

Bolt isn’t hitting 30 on grass or turf with all that equipment on

I get that.   But the elite guys are just faster.  He's not a pro sprinter, but he's also nowhere near a raw amateur.  To say he could take 3 tenths off that time would be a big stretch, and 10.05 is what it takes for an automatic invite to the trials.

I wouldn't go that far.  He's taller, which hurts starting.  But most of the top sprinters are built like LBers.  The point is he can't run with the fastest guys on the planet, and he'd never be able to.

Usain Bolt was 6'5" 207.  Just mention it as a comparable body type.

I’d guess Metcalf is significantly heavier than a lot of those guys too, at 230lbs. I randomly googled Justin Gatlin and he was listed at 176.

With a season of training with the elite track guys and coaches he could recondition his body and improve his step and I’d guess he’d be around a 10.15

But holy shit most of us mortals can’t fathom how fast that is

I still wanna see Tyreke get smoked...I don’t see most sprinters doing that. It’s so damn funny when one of the fast Chiefs guys break loose and are GONE....then here comes freak show Tyreke catching him like he’s not even trying.

Metcalf was last but those guys didn’t make him look silly either

Looks like that puts him in 84th in the US lol.

10.11 won his heat and 8th place was 10.36

Some NFL players upset because Tebow was signed before Kaepernick was. It’s the story that will never go away.

Not to mention didnt Kaep have numerous try outs? Did he switch positions to come back? Was he willing to sign with the worst team?

I can’t believe people act like it’s an apples to oranges comparison. Not just people, but active NFL players.

Also, does Kaep have ties to Urban Meyer?

With so many new starters on defense, I wish that we played them later in the season.

Agreed. Browns always piss down their leg in week 1. They come on stronger later but you just wish they had an easier opponent. Schedule's tough for the AFC North. I could see 10-7 winning that division.

I get how ridiculously fast that still is.  But like many other examples, the 8 guys that run the 100M final in the Olympics are on an entirely different level.

10.37 is, honestly, as disappointing as it is impressive.  Impressive for a big guy, but some white boy in Texas just set a national high school record with 10.15.

Anyway, reason for bumping is I just read an article that claimed Deion Sanders ran the 100M at FSU back in 1988 at 10.27.  That makes Metcalf's time more impressive, while also maybe showing the limits of what he could actually do.  Performance here is relative - relative to Pros that's a joke, relative to Joes he's a beast.

Yeah, all those guys are flying.  But when you get into sub-10, that's an entirely different league.

You can talk about Tyreke and Metcalf all you want....Mike Wallace is still, by far, the fastest guy I've ever seen in the NFL.  Jaw dropping, shot-out-of-a-cannon type stuff.  And I've never seen another receiver routinely given 15+ yard cushions.

Maybe just a visual fluke of an amazingly fluid running style, but I've never seen so many bad angles for YEARS from the defense.  He would go from 2 to 10 like no one I've ever seen.  Maybe some guys have faster starts, or higher top-ends, but his NFL speed was better than anyone I've seen.

Always felt that way about Devin Hester. He would just put it into another gear and be gone.

Some of that is a nature of his routes. Will Fuller gets huge cushions like that also, and routinely burns defenses.

Interesting list.  I thought Rod Woodson ran a 10.27 in the 100, but maybe that was wind-aided.  Hurdles were his specialty, but I think he ran 4.27 (hand-timed) at the combine.

Not surprised to see Willie Gault and Darrell Green high on the list.  I don't remember Jacoby Ford being that fast on a football field.

I guess the general take away is running 10.1 is quite rare even among the fastest to ever play in the NFL.  On the other hand, would be interesting what some of these guys might have done if they had been full-time track guys instead of NFL players.   Mostly college times, and a 100M sprinter peeks around age 25-26.

What would make this getting got even better would be if the entire story was that he applied, but the administration decided he didn't meet up to their standards and was under-qualified for the job.

I wouldn't let Adam Gase coach my son if he was a promising young QB.
