For some reason, I'm reminded of the old Sunday Night football segment that got ax'd around when people started figuring out that concussions were, in fact, bad.

Maus is an outstanding book.  But a school board in Tennessee has banned it because of a drawing of a naked female (in a concentration camp mind you) and a handful of swear words over its 300 pages (the book's about the holocaust after all).  I can’t tell if this is Jesus-lovin’, ‘Merica-freedom dumbassery or anti-semitism (maybe both).  Regardless, I doubt any of these board members actually have read it.

I saw a district banned a book that turned into one of my favorite TV shows.. "Handmaid's Tale"

Interesting.  I assume you are at least as upset with the left and Big-Tech banning and censoring all things semi-conservative and common sensical.

I'm not looking at it as a left vs. right thing.  Maus is a fantastic book and account of the holocaust.  I don't think it would be labeled conservative or liberal.  Not all rednecks are conservative and many antisemites could be considered left wing.  So I guess there's those things.  But no, I don't read about this and immediately relate it to current political talking points.  It's just a shitty thing.  Isn't that good enough?

i dont think looking back that the side that was for banning books of any kind has been looked upon favorably.  the list of books i have seen if true is ridiculous.

It should be, but the inherent hypocrisy is overriding.  The left goes nuts over Maus being banned in one school district, but they do nothing when conservative speakers are banned at universities constantly; and they do nothing when big-tech bans conservative opinion, and on and on ......   It is actually comical to see their reaction over a book.  It is a one-way street with them ....always.

I don't care about all that.  I was just sorry to see a school take away Maus.  I loved that book and it has always stayed with me.  As was said, book banners almost always look horrible in hindsight (i.e. Catcher in the Rye, To Kill and Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, etc.).  I think this one will be added to that list one day.

The left has also banned “To Kill a Mockingbird” recently which is an actual classic, among others. So it isn’t one sided by any means. Also, they didn’t “ban” Maus (which I’ve never heard of), they were looking to replace it as required reading with a different book on the holocaust (so no, not anti-Semitic). The book would still be available in the library. There are obviously some books that shouldn’t be available to kids, but neither of these fit that.

As I said, I didn't introduce this as a right vs left issue.  Banning To Kill a Mockingbird is just as bad.  I said it because I love the book Maus - it had an impact on me.  The people who banned it in Tennessee from their eighth grade curriculum had not read the book - according to the minutes of the meeting and objected to the use of "swear" words and "depictions of hangings".  Maus is not graphic in a Schindler's List type of way.  And if there are "swear" words, I don't remember them at all.

I hate reading about people who don't even know what they are talking about deciding things that are clearly above their pay grade.  Stupid is as stupid does I guess.

Agreed. We read “Night” by Eli’s Wiesel in school, and it was quite eye opening. Maybe I’ll have to search “Maus” out.

It's very good.  Heavy at times.  I'm not a graphic novel reader, but it worked very well in this format.  I highly recommend it.

Please do. Fantastic novel. I read it in high school. It is still sitting on my book shelf today.

I'm against banning any book at all. Growing up, I would purposely seek out banned books just to see why they are banned. Most of the banning are dumb and serve zero purpose.

My local Kroger has been out of cream cheese and pilsbury muffins for about 5 weeks now.  It’s super weird

There is a legit cream cheese shortage. Philly was offering people money to NOT buy cream cheese a while back.
