Any of you apply to colleges back in the day and not get accepted?

I only applied to a couple small ones so nothing tough there.

My son sent out applications to Michigan and OSU as backup plans and had free applications….UM sent him a letter a month ago putting him on a hold list to be further evaluated, today gets a letter saying he wasn’t accepted. I know UM is pretty high end but also….WTH?

I only applied to Marietta and Ohio State and was accepted at both. That was 21 years ago (holy shit).

Yeah….I know things are different and the tests and stuff are taught better and things may or may not be as stringent or more stringent. Just can’t fathom how he got denied. He was likely never going there but fuckem lol

But also same. Applied to some smaller ones (Findlay, Heidelberg, Wright State.) But I’m sure I would have been accepted to Harvard or Yale.

I didn’t apply anywhere I knew I wouldn’t get in lol 

How was it going to work with athletics? If he was accepted to Michigan, he’d hate OSU? And vice versa if accepted to OSU?

Like others, only applied where I would get in/ wanted to get in. But my GPA and ACT would have got me in anywhere, other than maybe Ivy League which I would never want. Humble brag I know. 

Michigan is pretty hard to get into from what I hear, and usually colleges are harder to get into for out of state students.

Applied to tOSU, CWRU, and Northwestern. At the time, tOSU was open enrollment for Ohio grads, so if you sent the paperwork in on time, you were in. Wasn't especially surprised to get into Case, was somewhat surprised to get accepted by Northwestern after coasting my last year in high school.

I got into every undergrad school I applied to. 

But I did apply to study abroad at Manchester University in the UK and got denied with the quickness. Settled on a lower tier school in London. It worked out. 

Syracuse accepted me as an undergrad, but didn’t accept me directly into their sport broadcast program. And it was probably the only school I would’ve gone to over Indiana because of that program. They said I would halve to reapply after a year and I wasn’t willing to chance it cause I didn’t want to go to Syracuse without the program.

I mean…. Michigan is a good school but they’re not that good to be turning that down lol

My wife works for UC and has worked in admissions in the past. She said there might have been a quota for in state kids, so he could be competing against out-of-staters only. Still, she said with that resume he should be at the top of the list either way.

I believe it was just to the school in general. Basically his 5th choice so it doesn’t matter but it just blows me away honestly.

Yeah the National Merit goes to basically 3 out of every 1000 seniors across the U.S. his PSAT score is right at that rate and the ACT uber elite as well. He’s leaning hard toward Pitt and he’s been accepted into their honors engineering program. They are stingy with scholarships and kinda pricey.

It’s was specific to their college of engineering….so it makes more sense but still seems head-scratching.

I joined the military after high school and didn’t go to college until I was 36. Applied to SNHU to take classes online. In 2019, I applied to OSU for an online masters program and was rejected. I decided to go back to SNHU to get my masters.

If this is all true, then someone at Michigan screwed up. 

That gets you into IVY, and Michigan is saying “no”?

Did he miss the priority deadline for applying? She said UC has a December (something) deadline, that if you apply after that you're put on a waitlist regardless of qualifications. If the program fills up before they get to you on the waitlist you're SOL. It might have also filled up with in-state kids before even considering out-of-state kids.

She also said he should've applied to UC. They have a very good engineering program and it's where co-ops started. She then said you're both stupid and should feel bad.

No, he doesn’t miss deadlines. Everything is done way early.
