More info from my wife.

Did he miss the priority deadline for applying? She said UC has a December (something) deadline, that if you apply after that you're put on a waitlist regardless of qualifications. If the program fills up before they get to you on the waitlist you're SOL. It might have also filled up with in-state kids before even considering out-of-state kids.

She also said he should've applied to UC. They have a very good engineering program and it's where co-ops started. She then said you're both stupid and should feel bad.

He visited UC and it was awful. My daughter and many of my friends’ kids same experience. UC does have a very good engineering program. The building he was allowed in the computers and equipment were outdated. They just wanted to sell off their plush athletic facilities. The tour people at UC are the worst.

When we took our daughter there for her 2nd visit….because she wanted to go there over Marshall, the girl led us around and said 3 different times during the tour “this is a good place to take a nap”…..then to end the tour she took us to the window showing the university pool and said she just likes to come here and watch the guys in their Speedo’s. She was very well trained obviously.

If this is all true, then someone at Michigan screwed up.

That gets you into IVY, and Michigan is saying “no”?

His testing scores were above the Ivy needed standards and he did all the extras the Ivy’s desire. No desire there though. His friend was just below him on PSAT but went 36 on ACT for first ever perfect score in our school’s history and she was put on waiting list at Yale. We have had a couple Ivy kids the last few years and they were lower on the scores but were accepted. We have one teacher that helps all the kids with the stuff it takes to get into the Ivy League but not consistent results.

Honestly not too surprised with this. My wife works in DAAP, which is super competitive and has some of the top programs in the country, but she tells me horror stories all the time.

35 ACT, 1490 PSAT which converts to a 1550 SAT, 4.0, National Merit Finalist, class president, band president, highest band honors at solo and ensemble events, youth leadership president, IBelieve foundation leader, several clubs at school, 10x letter winner, 3 sport athlete, 3x all-district, 3x all-league, 5x captain, 2x district spelling bee champion and regional finalist, member of Mensa.

There’s a humble brag and it’s funny that Michigan got ousted from the tourney the same day they told him no.

That’s a Harvard/Yale successful applicant.  Somebody at Michigan screwed up.  It’s a good school, but it isn’t that good.  Take it as a sign that he’s not supposed to go there.  It’s just as well.  Michigan grads on the whole have a completely over inflated sense of how much the rest of us care that they went there.  The place is for losers.

Their current football coach eats his boogers.  They employ the biggest fuck up I went to college with.  And their most storied football coach didn’t win anything of note.

Just double checking something…

36 is still perfect score on ACT right? They didn’t change that from 25 years ago when I took it right?

I mean I got a 32 composite score but the 36 I got on math and science both got me into any engineering school I wanted.

If they got 35 or 36 composite, and the scoring is the same as back then, they should have free rides anywhere they want. That’s an insane score.

No one in my high school class, and it was a pretty smart one, got over a 32 composite.

I thought that too but it’s just not the case it appears. 36 is perfect and back in my day 33 was as high as I heard of…..more recently I’ve heard more 33’s. My son was the first 35 in school history and he messaged his girl friend…..and she told him great job, I got a 36 lol. Completely stole his thunder.

Seems like the full rides are few and far between at the better schools and next level down. He was in the finals for the full ride all everything plus stipend at Marshall but wasn’t selected….he is an alternate but they only gave out 8.

His test scores awarded him about $30,000 at UK and $34000 at Pitt, but still well short of a full ride.

When he was notified that he was a National Merit Semifinalist he soon thereafter received a letter from University of Alabama and the Univeristy of Oklahoma offering full ride everything in their honors college…..this was back in November. We thought everyone would come calling and now he’s a finalist and still nothing else.

His problem seems to be is his race, his mom and dad are married. He probably won’t win many of the local scholarships because everyone thinks he’s gotten everything paid for. It’s kinda frustrating and he’s left wondering why his insane amount of work hasn’t paid off.

Maybe I should just started him punting footballs or kick field goals at an early age and took him that route.

It’ll all work out but I always thought a 34+ was pretty much pick where you wanted to go…..and then the PSAT nearly aced just guaranteed it…nope.

If 33+ is “common” now then they changed how they do scoring or made the test easier.

It used to be smart kids got 25+, really smart full ride kids got 30+, and only true genius’ got 35/36 perfect scores.

Getting 33+ used to be basically genius level and not “common” place.

I never said 33 was common….it does seem like the old day 21’s are now 25’s but here in southern Ohio they now at least teach it up, they didn’t for a LONG time. Only 2 current seniors are above 32. A few 30-32’s, a number of upper 20’s. I don’t think the test is much different, maybe a notch easier 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m at the elementary school but our high school in my district they are honoring the 25+ ACT, only 1 senior out of 65 kids. 33 definitely isn’t common, just more heard of than in the past.

If I remember the ACT thread back about 10 years ago on here…..everyone on here, besides me was a 30-34 and most were like:

I got a 32 but I was just a freshman and really didn’t even try lol.

I got a 22 then a 24, makes a good teacher of jim

I joined the military after high school and didn’t go to college until I was 36. Applied to SNHU to take classes online. In 2019, I applied to OSU for an online masters program and was rejected. I decided to go back to SNHU to get my masters.

How was their program?  Was that you in the TV commercial?

Wow, thanks have changed.  I took the ACT in 1976 to go to Ohio State.  I thought I scored a 17, and the max you could get then was a a 24.  It was good enough for OSU, lol.  They were taking everybody back then.

Had a classmate who went 36 ACT, 1800 SAT. Then taught himself Russian and took SAT in Russian and got 1480. He ended up with a full ride to Harvard.

Another classmate got waitlisted at Harvard, accepted Yale and Princeton, went to MIT. Spearheaded a robotic arm used in surgeries today. Named the project something out of spite for Harvard, but I cannot for the life of me remember.

SAT only goes to 1570 doesn’t it?

Giving a direct comparison to wondering why 35/36, kids obviously smarter than I am/was, weren’t getting full rides to wherever they wanted to go. As those scores 25 years ago you would be being courted and thrown money by IVY/MIT.

1600, 800 math, 800 verbal. I heard they added an optional or something part at one point that was another 800 point part of test but I heard that is not the case anymore, they are back to 1600.

When I did the PSAT conversion it stopped at 1570 for SAT. SAT must have something that can get 30 more points that isn’t on the PSAT

SAT has always been 800+800. My sisters year they added a written or reading portion or something for another 800. But as was mentioned, that only lasted a few years.

I also put I was top-20 in my graduating class. It wasn’t a lie. But I was also bottom 35. 19/43 lol. My classmates were stupid smart. And I was just trying to play soccer somewhere.

Math/science yes, most other school subjects above average at best.
