Summer’s are nice but also pretty needed

First week of the new gig is over. I was a little worried the first two days, but by the end of the week I was a lot more comfortable. It's an absolutely massive change to what I'm used to and will still take some time to adjust, but I feel a lot better about it now that I did on Wednesday morning when I woke up. That said, I'd be shocked if I stayed here for 8 years like my last job. I'd like to give it a year and then evaluate the market.

Had an interview on Friday. Left with mixed feelings. Don't know if I will accept if offered.

It's just a huge change from the dynamic I've been in for the last 8 years. Going from a team of 2 where we didn't necessarily meet every day to a team of like 10 where we do meet every day, sometimes multiple times, was a huge culture shock. 

I was definitely planning my exit after Tuesday, but for whatever reason things started falling into place on Wednesday and I feel a lot more comfortable. 

I don't regret leaving my previous job, and I am certain I'm going to learn a lot at this job, especially how to work on a larger team. The biggest downfall for me is that it's healthcare software, which comes with tons of regulatory stuff, and integrations with electronic health records, which is the main reason I don't see myself staying for an extended amount of time. But it's definitely a great learning opportunity, and I should be able to contribute a lot to the team with my experience.

2 months ago I would have said Yes, but as our company was bought out and there is a restructure in my Department, I now say No.

No, just a different structure in my group. We had 4 of us in the office prior to Covid, now I'm the only one on site. I didn't mind as I live 2 miles away.

Since the restructure they get to stay home and work doing remote support, yet I get to come on site to take care of it, and expected to work their ticket queues for remote support.

That's what happens when one company buys another and forces their ideas on the other. I'm also not impressed with my new Manager.

Got offered today and decided to accept. I still have mixed feelings overall, but it was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. At least now I can say I gave it a chance.

My takehome pay will take a 7-10% ding but I'll get much better benefits in return. Time will tell if it winds up being worth it in the long run.

Hope it works out. 

I hope you get your chair fixed.

I was going to comment that if they really want you then they should be offering 10-30% more than you currently make. 10% if the benefits are that much better, 30% if not. Taking a pay cut is never a great plan unless there are other work life balance things (travel, working remote, etc) that come into play.

Government role, salary is the salary and they don't have any wiggle room. There were other non-financial perks which were pulling me towards taking it. I'm at peace with my decision to turn it down.
