And the media in general who for years have made a big deal about the final 4.
post 49 you talked about how final 4 is a big deal worth celebrating. The region our Tigers are in is historically very bad with a very small number of state titles.

Doesn't matter for "OUR" Tigers, off and on, we've spent 18 years in region 3, winning the region 5 times and being regional runner up 3 other times. Basically half the years we were in region 3, we were either first or second.

But....Being such a huge Tiger fan, I bet you already knew that.

    Finally, you admit it.

Seriously, I don't know what makes YOU a butt munch, but "not liking Massillon Tiger football" has nothing to do with it.

Have you looked at who has tried out at our combine? http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/midwest/post/_/id/9597/ohio-sparq-all-combine-team When you combine that with some of the kids we have coming back, we are the favorite to win state.

Yeah, but everything isn't finalized with these kids yet, we have to find available homes for some families, or in a couple of cases, just the kids (we have several kids who's parents won't be accompanying them, therefore those three or four will share a duplex.) We also have a few more negotiations to go and as soon as we fire some teachers/administrators, we'll possibly have a few jobs for parents. One kid coming from out west with his mom will rent an apartment near the HS. The future is bright Bun Bun, as you know. (virtual high five.)

You guys have 2 years to get it done in D2. Then it's Super D1 for the Tigers

Classyposter58;1412200 wrote:Great idea! Talk about a fix, however how do you define districts? Youngstown Cardinal Mooney still is Youngstown, thus won't be punished for kids from the city? The problem isn't private schools in D1, it's the smaller ones where they absolutely dominate. I mean seeing my high school in 2008 go to the D4 Final Four and play Kettering Alter, who had 120 kids on their football team is unreal. They're supposed to be in D4? Heck Chris Borland the following season was B1G Frosh of the Year
Haven't been here for awhile, but was surprised to find somebody complaining about my beloved Alter. As a football alum from the school's second class, I've seen Alter grow for 50 years.

Alter has 120 kids on the team because they took all freshmen through seniors in the football program to the state championship games, to have a great experience. There are about 330 boys in the school (270 or so in grades 9-11). Alter competes with Centerville, Kettering Fairmont, Bellbrook, Oakwood, West Carrollton, Miamisburg and stragglers from a couple other public districts for students. The cool thing at Alter is to play sports, especially football, soccer and basketball, although baseball and boys' volleyball are big, too. A lot of the younger guys are getting into lacrosse. The country club sports (golf and tennis) are popular, too, but only a few guys are good enough to play.

As for Chris Borland, he's the second last son of a very competitive family. Dad played college football at Miami. Older brothers played football and soccer - Mark was an All American soccer player at Wittenberg. The whole family went all the way through St. Albert's and Alter. Dad was scoutmaster at the Church scout troop for several years, and coached grade school sports with his kids.

Chris is the hardest working weightlifter I ever saw. He's not very tall, and seeing him early in high school you never would have predicted his college success. He epitomizes the Alter model: work hard and play with intensity. Chris's example spurred the rest of the team to work hard. But the secret of Alter's back-to-back state championships, in addition to Chris, were the Boucher brothers. Austin gathered the team and challenged them to win state. He also told them that anybody out running around on weekends, doing things they shouldn't, would be found out and kicked off the team. Colin was the defensive leader until he broke his leg in the Fairmont win (first game of the season) his senior year. Then Austin changed his jersey number to Colin's, and led the team, along with Chris and a strong team effort, to win back to back.

All in all it's a great sports success story. They beat a good Steubenville team and a great Chagrin team those two years.

So sorry for your bad luck in meeting the Knights.

This year we hope for great senior leadership again. Hope to see you at the end of the season.

The school classy was discussing was Alter, have you looked at their website? Have you ever browsed over looking at what they offer class wise? For a mid level sized school, they offer a bunch of AP and honors courses in English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Foreign languages. They offer 3 foreign language courses! They have a class for orchestra, jazz band and marching band! If you think money is why they don't put a big band on the field at halftime I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell to you! LOL I would almost guarantee that every kid at Alter participates in something, sports, arts, or music. That is the point, you guys act like pure numbers is equal, well they are not! Public schools similar in size to privates, especially in certain parts of the state are at a distinct disadvantage. Poor rural schools (southeast ohio) and poor inner city schools cannot offer what these well to do privates (not all are) and well to do publics can!

It would interesting to see some actual data, such as amount spent per student, rather than just see your assumptions. Most private schools spend less per student than public schools. In regards to how this relates to football, I have never seen and studies done on the relationship between success in football and socio-economic level. If you look at the NFL and big time college programs, there are kids that have come from all of the different socio-economic levels.

Way to pick one sentence fragment out of my post and base your entire response on that. Go back and re-read the post you responded to. I was talking about the FEEDER schools...not the high schools. Most (read, not all...I'm sure you'll find exceptions) private grade schools do not have the same money coming in that the high schools do. In most (read, not all) private grade schools, they cannot afford band teachers or a band program. Students are required to pay to participate in band, while sports are free. Now if you are a parent of a student at one of these places, which would you guide your child to participate in...a free activity like football, or the pay-to-participate band (if it even exists at the school)? And if the kids aren't participating in band at the elementary and middle school levels, there is a good chance they will not have the desire to pursue playing in the band in high school. It's not that hard to figure out.

"Low-SES children are often left home to fend for themselves and their younger siblings while their caregivers work long hours; compared with their well-off peers, they spend less time playing outdoors and more time watching television and are less likely to participate in after-school activities (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)"

    http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/109074/chapters/How-Poverty-Affects-Behavior-and-Academic-Performance.aspx

"If individual socioeconomic factors, rather than school factors, account for differences in participation, what is it about individuals, particularly those from lower SES families, that makes a difference? Researchers have identified several barriers to student participation, ranging from the more tangible, including family or work responsibilities, limited resources for equipment or other expenses, and transportation or other logistical difficulties, to the more complex, such as lack of interest in or alienation from school and its activities (Kleese and D'Onofrio, 1994)."
