New League for Wooster, Orrville, West Holmes?
-
iced earthAnyone got any good info? Are the rumors on the other site true? Everyone west of Wayne county is talking like it's already a done deal and the OCC is already looking to replace them.
-
THE4RINGZInfo seems hard to come by on this topic. So much conflicting information floating around.

1_beastif orrville wasnt so hateful...they would be a good fit in WCAL...BUT their holier than thou attitudes.....wont work....if they make the plaayoffs, possibly another loss will make them realize this is not 1985.....
edit: heck in 85 they may have lost to the bears...just a thought -

We would have needed a slow track...ala Smithville / Norwayne last season. Dry field they beat us by 2 scores. Too fast. -
WooballAny chance this "new league" would include Dover, New Phila and Northwest?
-
CCRollyI assume this is the same "new" league that they've been talking about on the Orrville thread?
-
gowooI would hate to lose Ashland from the OCC, short drive and good competition. I really would noty care so much about the rest of the teams west of Wayne County.
-
iced earthThe rumors include Dover, New Philly, Northwest, CCC. Have also heard Cloverleaf, Canton South, and even Claymont were being considerd.

These are some of the names I'm hearing too.
The big point that it may not be a perfect fit, but if the OCC is expanding to the west, then we need to find somewhere else and do all we can to not be left without a home. -
CCRollyI'm assuming that Triway is content in the PAC?
-
iced earthIf Orrville and Triway could be honest with themselves...the best option is to approach the WCAL and ask in. Shorter (much shorter) travel times. More local interest and better average attendance.
Let's face it...Orrvilles so called tough scheduling in football has got them exactly the same number of state titles as Norwayne.
I think if Orrville and Triway joined the WCAL, it would instantly become the second best D4,5,6 league in the state, and may move on to rival the MAC as adding Orrville would create an atmosphere that would force already good programs to step it up a notch. -
THE4RINGZI see Triway joining the WCAL before Orrville does.

Yeah...Thats why I said Orrville needs to be honest with itself.THE4RINGZ;1079884 wrote:I see Triway joining the WCAL before Orrville does.
Let's face it...The city of Orrville, is just one crooked politician luring Smuckers away, from being Rittman. -
THE4RINGZWho cares about what Orrville and.Triway do, Wooster seems to be the odd man out here.
-

They are in a tough spot being the only big school in the area. Their options are very limited compared to an Orrville. Less travel for them is not a possibility.THE4RINGZ;1079903 wrote:Who cares about what Orrville and.Triway do, Wooster seems to be the odd man out here. -
CCRollyIf left out of the new league (potentially), and no longer interested in the OCC (if the expansion to the West of Mansfield is true), what does that leave Wooster? I'm one of the few who wishes we never left the Federal League in the first place. The only other league I can think of relatively close, and not really....is the Suburban League. Ugh....Wooster needs to get this right.
-
THE4RINGZI prefer the Federal League over the Suburban League. But neither would be my real first choice.
-
WooballAs a Dover fan, and going to the COW(and family living in Wooster) I'd like to see Dover and Phila in a league with Wooster and Orrville. Dover and Orrville had some great games during the 90's and early 00's. Plus it'd be another reason to stop at Cocci House, Matsos or Olde Jaol a couple times a year.
-
FlashLets face it. Orrville's tough scheduling has got them 1 title, a couple of semi's and numerous play off appearances. Norwayne had a once in a generation team. Were not coming to the Wcal anytime soon.

You beat me to it Flash.Flash;1079970 wrote:Lets face it. Orrville's tough scheduling has got them 1 title, a couple of semi's and numerous play off appearances. Norwayne had a once in a generation team. Were not coming to the Wcal anytime soon.
Ice...Yes, Norwayne does have the same amount of titles in football as Orrville, but your comparing apples to oranges there buddy.
OK...so go to every member of the WCAL and ask them if they want to play Orrville twice in basketball and once in football every year! Your answer would be..NO! A county school beats us in football and now the entire WCAL wants us in their league?? LOL -
RedRider1I'll be honest with myself as an Orrville fan.
Are we what we were in the 80's & 90's? No.
Would a majority of WCAL schools want us? Doubt it. Maybe 1 or 2 would vote for us....but you really think the Rittmans, Chippewas and Daltons would want to play us every year in football and twice a year in basketball (boys & girls) most years?
I think across most sports, the WCAL might be a good fit...but remember why the All-Ohio League disbanded? Because they couldn't beat Orrville in football. That's not arrogance, that's a fact. Football is the measuring stick here.
We might struggle in wrestling and baseball, but I don't think Orrville fans would have a big problem with that.
Gotta think boys track (among others) would love competing in the WCAL.
If Orrville is on par with the WCAL, why isn't every other WCAL school sending kids to D-1 colleges? And not just one per decade....this is a consistent pattern over the last half of a decade. -
Old RiderWell said my man!
-
THE4RINGZIf we are basing the decision solely on football, RR1 is correct. The WCAL wants no part of Orrville or Wooster on an annual basis. The league may have a team or two every now and then that could compete with those two but not year in and year out.
-
Dr. KnOiTaLL
I agree, while Orrville may not dominate their league year in and year out in any sport, if they were to move into the WCAL, the would annually finish top 3 in football, and in basketball they would always be near the top. Even in baseball, they would likely finish in the upper half. Being a larger school surrounded by industry, Orrville gets a lot of superior athletes in comparison to the small schools in the WCAL. Could you imagine Chippewa and Rittman facing Orrville in every sport EVERY YEAR?! I could see Dalton competing with them at times in some sports, but Rittman and Chippewa would absolutely HATE the thought of those meetings being on their schedule.THE4RINGZ;1080032 wrote:If we are basing the decision solely on football, RR1 is correct. jph1589In Sunday 2/5/2012 Daily record.....Dorksen said this.
PARTING SHOTS -- Orrville athletic director Kent Smith confirmed this week that the Red Riders' are exploring options outside of the Ohio Cardinal Conference, which has had the same eight schools since 2004.
Along with a couple other OCC schools that Smith didn't want to name, he said Orrville will have a fact-finding meeting Feb. 9 with a group of schools that include Dover, New Philadelphia and Claymont.
Some of the OCC's western members also have had talks with some outside schools, Smith said.
"My guess is the OCC will keep the same eight schools, but everyone is exploring options," said Smith, who expressed concerns with some of the road-trip distances in the OCC. "There are a lot of dominos falling in Northwest Ohio, with leagues making changes.
"It's not like any of the OCC teams are mad about anything, but people want to protect their positions. Schools don't want to be left without a seat when the music stops. No one wants to be an independent school without a league,"
And I also found this....

The “OCC” to Fold?
Story courtesy of www.swankonsports.com
Like a ten-point lead against Mansfield Senior on the basketball floor, the Ohio Cardinal Conference may cease to exist if the rumors are true anyway.
The word is out that the Mansfield area schools (Mansfield Senior, Mansfield Madison, Lexington, Clear Fork and Ashland) are looking to perhaps sever their relationship with Orrville and West Holmes, and maybe Wooster. The group would then join with a combination to possibly include Ontario, Shelby, Galion or Willard. Ontario and Galion are currently members of the North Central Conference that will suspend operations after the 2013 and Willard and Shelby are with the Northern Ohio League.
An administrator within the Ohio Cardinal Conference told www.swankonsports.com that Orrville was seeking to form a league toward Stark County to reduce travel expenses. “If that happens I wouldn’t mind cutting lose Wooster and West Holmes and picking up Galion, Ontario and Shelby,” said that administrator. He said he looks for Orrville to leave the league within two years.
Meanwhile, a coach in the “OCC” told Swankonsports.com that he understood that “OCC” was considering expansion with the addition of Ontario and Galion, but if that were the case the schools in the eastern part of the league, especially Orrville and West Holmes, would strongly consider dropping out due to the increased travel associated with adding two schools west of Mansfield. This source says the Mansfield area schools want to keep Wooster and the practicality of any new group may hinge on Wooster staying as part of the mix.
Sources within the Northern Ohio League, currently with only six members, but adding Vermillion, say they have not been invited to any meeting to discuss any future affiliation outside of the “NOL.” Willard, last fall, held a press conference to announce its intension to stay as part of the “NOL” long term and Shelby has consistently said they want to keep the “NOL” going.
Upper Sandusky, also out once the “NCC” closes shop, has been accepted by the Mid-Ohio Athletic conference and still another source has told www.swankonsports.com that Ontario and Galion are considering entering that league, which would take it to 16 teams.
Depending on who you talk to a meeting may, or may not, be held this week to discuss options regarding the Ohio Cardinal Conference.
