I grew up in this town, played sports for OHS and most likely you didn't do either. Those of us that have are the ones that can truely understand the "tradition".
    Exactly!

It appears that everyone has shared their point of view on most items involved on the disaster that was this past season. Some have shared a positive opinion on certain elements of the team, and some not so positive. I think the points have been made and we all know where EVERYONE stands. Why don't we agree to move on? On another note note, can you active Orrvillians fill me in on who is coming back on this team, what position? Where do you see any potential for upcoming season as far as secondary, D line, linebackers? What about offensive line or skill positions? Wondered how many of the kids that are coming back play basketball, track and or baseball?

Just off the top of my head: Zook(WR,LB),Brown(OL,DL),Short(QB,DB),Summers(OL,LB) will be the backbone of team. Dyson(RB,DB)&Inman(RB,LB) have the potential to be special players IF they dedicate themselves. Ritchie(DB,WR),Smith(DB,WR),Auble(OL,LB),Kick(OL,DL),Coleman(WR,DB),Ballinger(WR,DB),Palmer(RB,LB) & Duskey(K) all have playing experience and can contribute. There are a handful of soph's to be that should contribute as well and possibly a Frosh or two. It all starts in the weightroom as far as how good this team will be of course.

For the record, and to refute words being put into my mouth...That would NOT be a platform I would run on...I'd rather focus on the fiscal well being of our schools and promoting a culture of academic and athletic excellence first & foremost.

...but I appreciate the support regardless.

Question...The levy failed and there will be no increase in the revenue to the schools, however, the school will continue to receive monies to operate the schools from the current taxes. Money was provided by the state to construct new schools, money was provided by private corporations and individuals to construct the multi-purpose facility and improve the stadiumas well as the schools themselves. The school buildings are modern and therefore should be more energy efficient and the stadium maintenance is said to be more efficient from a maintenance standpoint. I've read where it should cost approximately 25% to upkeep annually that of natural grass.

Understanding the current personnel costs prior to layoffs. What is costing so much more now that the schools are going into financial peril?

Series maybe you should talk to all the teachers and aids that got pink slips a few weeks ago. There were a lot of them and more to come. Goverment is constantly taking funds from the school systems. That is one major factor. We are losing some really good teachers. Believe me I don't have all the answers either, but I do know those things you mentioned actually did help the situation not hurt it.
  • Old Rider
Our schools have been operating on a very tight budget for a long time and doing a good job of it I might add. But you can only do that for so long before it is time to ask the taxpayer for dollars.

My family operates on one income and it is VERY TOUGH, but when it comes to our kids, keeping good teachers, having good schools...voting YES for the levy is a no-doubter!

Unfortunately, other families in this community cant afford it (it will be tough for my family as well) and we have a large number of familes at or below poverty level in this town that will continue to vote no (and I dont blame them). This entire country is feeling the effects of our current economy (presidency) and I just hope these next 4 years are better than the last!!

Money runs out in this terrible school funding system we have in Ohio and schools have to come back to the voters for new money. Let's say the previous money was set to last 8 years...but it's lasted 10....we've actually gotten more "bang" for our taxpayer buck. So the school should be commended for stretching every dollar..for sharing services with other districts, for doing more with less, no? Of course not....we have idiots & low information voters who think it was taxpayer money that funded the turf and the multi-purpose building and see the new schools (paid for with state funds) and think "they have plenty of money...they don't need any more."

Now...about what costs more....let's start with salaries. They go up every year...so does health care costs....both are negotiated by the TEACHERS UNION. The single biggest cost to any school district is salary. Of course, this gets spun...again...by the low information voter...that teachers are paid too much and don't deserve their pay & benefits. When you count in their hours spent preparing their lesson plans and other various out of classroom time, they average around $20 an hour. Is that "rich" as some would call it? It ain't McDonalds...but it ain't what a doctor or lawyer gets either. People who complain about teacher salaries kill me.....you could have went to school and gotten the same degree that teachers have. But it's just easier to whine about what others have rather than going out and working for it.

But wait...there's more.....Costs for outside services, books, office supplies, electricity costs...plenty of costs increase. You think office paper costs the same as it did 20 years ago? Of course not. What about fuel for buses? That sure isn't the same as it was just a few years ago.

Is that enough or do I need to keep going? See how all these increases in costs (outgo) can exceed property tax money collected (income)? Schools have to operate in the black....mandated by state law. So they have to make cuts...which they've done...or ask for new money..which they're doing. All of us have a household budget...what happens when outgo exceeds income? You make cuts or find a second job.

And to the idea that since we have turf, it's a money saver...it is...but not in the way of salary and benefits. That custodian who used to mow the grass field is still paid his salary. It's not like we had a full-time guy mowing the field that they can just fire now. We save on watering, mowing and fertilizer costs...Savings...but hardly a dent in the big picture.

Town has changed....the one big arguement for supporting school levies is that it protects property value...but when we have a large chunk of our town renting...what do they care if the value of that home goes up or down?

Don't worry Series will tell you it is the Coaches fault.

I sure hope not. I tried to present real challenges that our schools face with funding...the question was asked what costs more...and I did my best to lay out economic realities.

I sure hope the administrators hold meetings to help educate voters about problems & solutions. Why not have one of those nights where people can show up & ask questions and hear facts about the levy. Fight ignorance with information.

Series, just so you know..none of my comments were directed at you personally..just took your question as an opportunity to share some realities.

More of these discussions need to be had if this levy is to pass & our schools can continue to achieve.

Let me put on my Red Rider glasses, I think there’s some upside to next year, but a lot depends on a few juniors and a lot of sophomores , getting in the weight room, and camps this off season. This is my reasoning. There is a priority put on the older kids, to work with the current sophomores, I saw what happened to my kid, when Davis, and Monheim got a hold off him his freshman summer in the weight room, pressure and encouragement from upper classmen can work better than adults a lot of the time. Here is my take on offensive and defensive lines.
O-line Kick, Brown, maybe Summers (possible RB) all have had lots of playing time.
James Miller (soph) is working hard in the weight room, already drop 30 pounds
Amir Simpson, now in basketball, but is still in weight room, big kid, and seems to be committed.
Connor Davis, good hard working kid, hopefully this will be his year
Couple of freshmen to be soph that could see time, Corbin Sprowls, Jacob Hochstetler
Key to o-line will be offseason work, my question is who will be center, and also the Kick boy is one of the toughest kids I have seen play in the junior class, if that kid hit the weight room hard and came in to 2-days in shape, look out on both sides of the ball.
D-line Kick, Brown, and one of the above at tackle.
People to watch, not on the line.
Joel Zook putting on some serious muscle
Connor Auble already big and strong, finally figured his feet problem out, seems to be doing fine.
Chandler Smith, came back last year and got more and more varsity time as the year went on.
Kyle Ritchie, just straight and steady works hard and always reliable.
Sorry if I missed some one, like to hear from someone that watched some more JV than I did, I hope their is a sleeper in that bunch, that is a difference maker Friday night.

I asked the question to gain information that I didn't know, I've spoken with a teacher that has imparted much of that information. I'm not taking it personal and I believe that perhaps the school board should make a greater effort to inform people of these situations.

Verily, everything you've said I understand and agree with, always had before you ever said it.

Old Rider, the current construction of the new high school is scheduled to take 1.5 - 2.0 years I would guess as I don't have any particulars. The demolition of the designated portion of the existing high school will take a mere fraction of that same time.

Do you really think or believe that the mess the current president inherited in his first four years could have been corrected in four years?

Especially when the "tea party" (whoever they are) and a majority of the republican party stated that they "would not work with him in an effort to cause his programs to fail, (the programs can't succeed if they aren't voted in), so that he would be seen as a failure and not be re-elected. If he was so "terrible" in his efforts, don't you think it strange that he won the election rather convincingly for such a "poor" performance?

The effects of our current economy was created by someone else. Now, those who so steadfastly opposed him will have to humble themselves to work with him to get the economy turned around because, it's effecting more "wallets" than they realized and they know, people are now paying attention!

Awesome stuff RIDER DAD! Makes me excited for next season...need the two-headed RB (Dyson,Inman) & QB (Short) in that weightroom ALL summer ( and any other "down" time) to make this turnaround happen! Great to hear the work is beginning for some.

Back to football. Politics aren't any fun and only cause hard feelings. We have enough of that talking about high school kids playing sports.
