Week 2: Campbell Memorial (1-0) at South Range (0-1)

  • BigDean1
Campbell Memorial travels to South Range on Friday to take on the Raiders. Campbell rolled over a young Mineral Ridge team 42-0 in week one. South Range lost 13-7 in overtime to Warren JFK at Mollenkopf. The Red Devils have to focus and prepare for a well coached and disciplined South Range team that will be playing its home opener. This is Campbell's first of four straight road games. South Range is unlikely to face another team during the regular season with the speed and athletes that Campbell Memorial has. This may be an interesting game. Your thoughts?

Campbell is too fast and the athletes will get loose early and often red devils 35-14
  • sonnyblack
agree w/ohio. if they couldn't score on jfk, they sure is hell aren't gonna be able to match us score for score.

May not even be that close. I think we may get a second shutout. Unless it's out of hand and the JVs get some more playing time and give up somethin cheap to them (1 1/2 quarters yesterday was huge for the reserves and that's going to go long way this year)

Btw: there was a #11 that made a nice tackle but was not listed in the program, that was Nick Lyras who was granted a transfer from Mooney back to Campbell last week.

The only way JFK can win is if they get an entire new offense, and tackle better

The Lyras kid is well put together and athletic. I wonder how Coach Sikora and staff wil get him into the mix.

Very good question Dean... I also wonder. he is not a second string player. My thoughts was he has came in late to the devils within the last week and a half and not enough practice in yet. So I'm sure he will be out there with the first string next week a little more. I was wondering who the heck that was also.. Good to see the boys are staying around and some are coming back.. Great news. Now onto the South Range game..

All i heard was we need to wait to see how we do with South Range. Well I'm saying we should score at anytime. We have a very good offence and I'm Sold on Reyes. The kid throws on the run like a beast. Now what do we wait on to see how good this team is till the Girard game? Then you factor in this Devils Defence. My word they are fast and will lay a hit on you that you surly wont forget. And notice anything new this year with the defence. Not many Miss tackles. This is my only fear. Over athletic and Big headed. And adversity. But last year we seen many games we had to face adversity. The whole first string dealt with it pretty good last year. Reyes will see it soon enough. but he sure as heck didn't get rattled after the big sack last night. Last night after that sack i heard people discussing about this kid and saying He is not Lester and that spells doom. At half time that tune changed to could be better then Lester. I kid you not one bit!!!

I give it to the Devils only cause I'm a fan!!! No score prediction cause i wont get to see the game on my TV till it shows up on the web site tomorrow.

I told you guys how I felt about Reyes quite a while ago. Stats thrown out the window, that kid took charge and was a field general last night. Toss in 9-10, 100 yards and a TD and you really couldn't ask much more for his debut. The kid played his ass off.

I too believe they need to give Charles Smith more handles with the ball. I was impressed with quite a few of the JV squad that got some significant PT in the 2nd half. I thought, aside from the fumbled snap, that Motrell did a nice job including that 25 yard rip on 3rd and long. I also thought Desean JOHNSON (lol) showed a ton of potential as does Adrian Brown. Fellas there's good things happening and these kids are the cars that will be keepin the train rollin for the next few years.

This is the sign of a great program.

We've been dying for this for 20 years......is that the reason the crowd is dead? Lol

I'm gonna put on facebook if they don't get fired up all the hudd....er, CHATTERERS are gonna start streaking!! Lol

Regarding the crowd not being into it, I felt as if I was in church at times. Also, I felt the attendance was just marginal on a beautiful night for football. Much of the crowd that did show up were late arrivals. That's because of the horrible 7 o'clock start rule that the area conferences have adopted. I don't believe Lyras is going to replace any particular player on offense or defense, unless there is an injury. I believe Coach Sikora will utilize him as part of the rotation to keep the kids from getting gassed. He looks like a defensive end, strong safety, linebacker type of player. If I am right that's five positions he is capable of spelling. South Range runs that wing-t which means plenty of misdirection running plays. They have good size on the offensive line. The quarterback is just a sophomore and he looks to be prone to make bad throws if pressured. I believe their best player is #42, Dan Goode. He is a tight-end defensive end and was all over the field vs. Kennedy.
The Devils have to stay disciplined on defense. I don't believe South Range is capable of shutting down the Campbell offense. On the jayvees playing 1 1/2 quarters vs. Mineral Ridge...............that's good. They gain experience. They were a little sloppy with the turnovers. But they did move the ball. It would be nice to see that being duplicated minus the turnovers a few times this season because of huge Campbell leads. South Range is a much better football team than Mineral Ridge. Make no mistake about that.

South range did move the ball right up and down the field on jfk and turned it over in the endzone multiple times but takes them at least 10+ plays to score when in campbells offense they can score on one play against a slow D of south range. The ONLY way south range can keep it close is if they control the ball for as long as they can and keep hughes from getting loose.

this will be a good game and wont be a blow out at all. range will run clock on their possessions, and this game will basically come down to disciplined play from the dline and lbs. if we are in our spots and reading steps correctly then we win this game. plain and simple. stop their offensive scheme and you win the game, i dont see the passing game as much of a threat. jfk didnt impress me, and both teams seemed small to me.

I agree. Range's game plan will be to keep the Campbell offense off the field. Our defense has to stay disciplined. Mistakes against that wing-t could lead to some big plays. Range's QB is just a sophomore. He has a nice arm but threw 4 interceptions vs. Kennedy and seems to get rattled when being rushed. If Campbell stops their running game and forces them into third and longs, Campbell will take advantage of it. Range has good size on the offensive line but they look small on defense. #42 Goode is a good two way player for them. #62 and #73 looked solid on the offensive line vs. Kennedy. But I believe Campbell's defensive line is superior to that of JFK.
I am looking forward to this game. Get there early because the seating capacity at South Range is small.

Seating is definitely small. On paper Campbell should come out on top. But there is always the chance of big mistakes. And big mistakes can derail a strong team!! Mistake free is key to Victory.. I give the game to Campbell providing they play smart and don't let anyone get into your head and eliminate as many mistakes as possible.

I watched the South Range JFK game on My Valley Sports.com Games on demand. Sorry but i don't see how South Range can beat the Devils in 4 qts. There Defence is not capable of keeping up with our speed. Impossible!!! There offence is decent at best in the wing T.. They have no speed in the backfield. They are relaying on misdirections just cause of this reason. And yes the Wing T is a great offence for slower backfields but they are real slow. our defence will have fits till its figured out. and it wont take long. Campbell should not have a problem in this game scoring often if they want. Only thing that can cause up to lose this game is mistakes! A lot of them. Even if we have some mistakes i just don't see how they can score enough in a shot out against us. There Qb is prone to mistakes. Big costly mistakes. and they don't catch very well. This game can be over quickly. I was under the assumption they where a better team then last year. And JFK is not at all the JFK that was talked about in Preseason. This is my thoughts on the game. BigDean was absolutely right about the speed of Range.

I think that this is crucial game for South Range. They will have to win out to make the playoffs so they will come out swinging. Are we athletic enough to overcome the dumb mistakes? Are we disciplined enough? Ridge was young and didn't pose a threat. A South Range team that needs a win badly at home will not be an easy victory. I hope that the kids take this team seriously. If not, it could be a frustrating night.

Campbell does not want to get into a shootout with them on their own field like last season at Campbell, where Range stayed in the game for nearly three quarters. Campbell has much better team speed. But on defense the Devils need to stay in their gaps and the linebackers will have to make good reads against that funky wing-t. Range's #33 looks quick on his feet. We'll need to stop him from finding holes and getting into the open field. I wouldn't be surprised to see South Range attempt a couple of trick plays in between all of the running plays they will use. If they pass, I believe it may only be when they are forced into long yardage situations on third down. Like oldschool states above, Campbell needs to keep the mistakes at a minimum and put points up on the board. This is a huge game for both schools as far as I am concerned. But my impression is that Campbell's speed and athleticism will be a big factor in the outcome. South Range can't emulate Campbell's speed in their practices. They will only find out how fast Campbell is when they get on the field against us on Friday.
  • Ohio
3 and outs will kill south range.... If south range gets a couple 10+ play drives and possibly a couple turnovers they can sneak a win but thats maybe a 5 percent chance of that happening
  • Struthers Fan
This may be a little closer for Campbell than last week. Still, the Devils roll. 35-7.
  • BigDean1
Here is something a little off topic, although not really. It could be around 85 degrees and humid at kickoff on Friday night. The stadium is very near a large pond and the lighting system is fairly low to the ground. So if anyone is planning on wearing shorts to the game, I would put on some insect repellent before coming Otherwise you may get eaten alive by mosquitoes and gnats.

This weather this time of the year is what i hate! Look for cramps this week in some games.
