Youngstown needs a new conference

    Seriously, there's no reason Mooney and Ursuline, two of the better programs in the state, should be left without a conference.

    I can't see how Fitch and Boardman moving to the Federal League has done much good. Bring em back and reform the SVC I say. I could deal with Harding not being in the conference, although they'd be a welcome addition. But the natural rivalry that exists between Ursuline and Fitch and Mooney and Boardman is too hard to ignore. Even if it were just those four teams it would be one of the better conferences in NEO. Ideally I'd like to see:

    Mooney
    Ursuline
    Fitch
    Boardman
    Canfield
    Howland
    Harding
    Poland or Liberty (I know Brungard would probably resign before he had to play Mooney and Ursuline EVERY year)

    I know this is something that gets discussed every year, but its a shame that in most years when Mooney and Ursuline aren't contending for a state title (lets face it...this recent run won't continue as is) theres nothing these kids have to shoot for other than maybe a playoff appearance and even then you can't say that you're the "champs" of anything.

    Not a bad idea..........but will the parochial schools be OK with this conference?

    I don't think Liberty belongs with that group. I would be very surprised if any of those teams left their current conference.

    It would be great to see a conference with those teams but I doubt it would ever happen, most of those teams refuse to play Ursuline and Mooney as out of conference games. The really sad part about it is that the players and fans would love to see these teams compete against each other but these are not the ones that put the schedules together.

    Ain't going to happen. If Mooney & Ursuline want a league ,call Iggy & Ed's. Thats a place to start. I'd bet money it will be a cold day in he11 when public schools willing agree to add them in a public league. If you really want a league, do what many of the Cleveland or Cincinnati parochials do -- make one of yourselves. Play like minded schools for league competition. Or stop whining -- the deck is stacked for state titles, so leave the league championships to the rest of the kids to compete for. :p

    Ummm what? So every other school in Ohio that wins state championships is allowed to win conference titles as well, but not Mooney and Ursuline? Thats ridiculous. And being in a conference with Iggy and Eds (while I would love it) makes NO sense. Conferences are based on geography, which is why it makes no sense for Boardman and Fitch to be in a league full of Stark county teams.

    I love how you say "stop whining" and then proceed to whine about the deck being stacked against you. Your team sucks, thats why the deck is stacked against you.

    I agree no way would I put either of those teams in the league I am in if I am a public school.

    You need a whole generation of people holding asinine grudges to die off before any more changes with conferences.

    Hell, the AAC had to split 16 teams into 3 divisions instead of 2 to get around the petty crap.

    The conference with the most public school state titles in the state (MAC) has St. John's in it. The public schools have won multiple state titles. Teams tend to play to the level of their competition. If the AAC would play Ursuline and Mooney, it would help them come playoff time. But everyone wants to create a 10-0 or 9-1 schedule, then lose early in the playoffs.

    If you've seen JFK play in recent years, you would know there is a huge physical disparity between them and the likes of Mooney or Ursuline. I think Coach Nap is protecting his players here. In other sports, when you play a team that is significantly superior physically the score is lopsided. In footbally, people get hurt. And add to that the small size of JFK's roster, the lack of depth becomes a huge issue also.

    Makes sense????? JFK has 79 boys in the whole school. Because of the cuts at Delphi and GM numbers have went to this level. Very possible the school may not exist in the not to distant future. JFK should not even be brought up with Mooney and Ursuline.

    "Physical disparity" ?? Have you seen the difference with many public H.S. and the parochials?? Yet you want them to play. Go sign up 10 parochials to play . Make a league of 6-8 parochial teams. Knock yourself out.

    BTW, Nappy has always been a "cherry -picker". D-VI JFK is a natural game for D-V Ursuline. Ursuline matches their best players from Youngstown, Hubbard, Liberty, Girard,etc vs JFK's best players from Warren, Niles, Howland, McDonald,etc. Should be a good game. Oh, thats right, Nappy wouldn't like that.............. not like playing only the best players at Newton Falls or the best players at Champion. :p

    I don't buy this. What a cop out. JFK played D2 (and 9-1) Howland very well. No one got hurt. I respect JFK a lot but if THIS is the BS reason you're giving for not playing Mooney or Ursuline....ugh. What a great thing to tell the talented kids that play football for JFK. "Well boys, we think you're great and al, but we think if you play the good teams you'll get hurt."

    Now, as for Mooney, Iggy & Ed's among others would be a perfect fit. After all, each have about the same number of players on each team. Those players are the best from many numerous communities in their respective areas and in some cases, the best players from multiple counties. The number of regular students shouldn't matter as we aren't counting the number of future doctor, lawyers, etc -- just the number of players on a team and since only the best players some how end up on the team from multiple communities ( and counties), a fair playing field is set.

    I envision a great league with Cleveland, Youngstown, Akron & Canton parochials. Great competition. Numerous future college players drawn from multiple communities for each school. Coaches who are great at beating public schools now turning into nightmares for each other in intense competition. Of course, the fair competition has a down side -- many will now have losing seasons and not make the playoffs. Only the best will. But...........................................

    thats life as we tell the public school kids. Learn to adjust.

    One of my favortie all time lines came from Coach Napolet who in an interview I heard, ripped apart schools like McDonald, Mineral Ridge and Niles and everyone else that wouldn't play him. Then in the very next question said We don't want to play Mooney and Ursuline

    Really? Go check out the roster of JFK this year. Check out the size of the players. There have been 2 years in the last 5 that JFK had to cancel freshman football because they didnt have enough players. Check out the D1 college players Mooney and Ursuline produce EVERY YEAR. Now show me how many JFK kids recieved scholly in any division. If JFK played Ursuline/Mooneys schedule they possibly wouldnt win a game. But ..we should play them. Laughable.

    We dont get the best players in Warren...thats laughable. But if you want to talk about the players at Howland or Lakeview, Niles, who went to gradeschool from k-8....we can. Warren has the highest unemployment rate in the state because of GM and Delphi. Those are facts and they make decisions for most on not paying tuition.

    I respect Mooney and Ursuline but no way should JFK be in a league with them.

    As for former JFK players & schollies ( Penn St., YSU, D-IIs,etc) nah, no need to compare them with the publics , most of whom's players don't even end up at D-IIIs. Of course, there are lots of D-IIIs from JFK too. But who's counting ??

    Niles has had many more kids from St. Stephen's and Mount Carmel over the years than JFK has had kids from the Niles Public schools. If you want to talk about transfers, fine. But in the Youngstown/Warren area many more kids transfer from private to public than the other way around. Families have a right to do what they feel is in the best interest of their child.

    Heres some advice, for your "best interest" -- if you want a league, a chance to play for its championships, where good competition exists........................................................ line up a bunch of other parochials to form a league with. That could happen quick, if its the "best interests" of your kids to provide a league and not wait around forever for something that isn't going to happen. That would serve your "best interests".

    How do you have any idea what is in another familiy's best interests or why they pick a school? In the Youngstown area if your kid is good at football, you would probably look at Mooney. If your kid is talented in music, you would look at Boardman. Different schools are stronger in different areas.

    Would you quit whining already? This is about a hypothetical new conference for Youngstown, not your "why not us" and "lifes not fair" moan-fest. Your team will never compete for a state title if its fans share your sissy mentality. Name me ONE sport where there is a "level playing field" like people claim to want in high school football.

    Why is Colerain a perennial contender? Glenville? Coldwater? Marion Local? Davidson? McKinley?

    What school do you support? I bet its South Range. Ya....you sound like a South Range whiner. You must love patting yourself on the back for going undefeated every year but losing to GOOD public schools like Kirtland or Patrick Henry in the playoffs.

    Who's whining ?? I'm suggesting that publics long ago realized it was their "BEST INTERESTS" not to be in a league with a parochial(S) . If the parochial REALLY wanted a league, I have suggested a VIABLE means of doing so. But if this is simply a discussion of dissing on publics, move on. The BEST INTEREST decision on that has already been made. I'll respect your BEST INTEREST decision as long as you respect the public's BEST INTEREST decision. Fair ?? You feel free to make your kids decision and let the public schools make their decisions for their kids.
