No argument at all with "open enrollment".Strapping Young Lad wrote:
It doesn't matter if they are from Steubenville or Richmond or Weirton...Al Capone wrote: I dont care if they played for harding. The question was if they are from steubenville.
If nothing illegal is being done, what makes you think anyone has to answer to YOU?????
It's called open enrollment and if you have a problem with it perhaps it's time for you to quit following Ohio HS football, b/c that is the reality of it...
There was not open enrollment when Reno built the program into something that kids from different towns would be a part of....so now they reap the benefits of the the work kthey put in back in the 80's and early 90's.....before open enrollment
If a kid has a choice why would he not want to come to SHS to play in front of huge crowds, big time football programs, and PLAYOFFS/CHAMPIONSHIPS?????
I won't claim that education is the reason that all kids come to Big Red b/c how the hell do I know why every kid does....but I know a few who have come to SHS from other schools and don't play any sports, So, you make an assumption.
I think BL, Brooke, Madonna, IC, all had pretty good seasons, so ALL the great players must NOT be coming to SHS.
Do not blame any kid or parent for wanting to "open enroll" for a better chance at being seen by scouts. -

Your 'standardized test scores' argument won't hold any water when it comes to the quality of the education available. Even if the quality is present it doesn't quarantee students motivation or inherent ability, and all the other factors that come into play when considering test scores.Darkon wrote:

If you want to make that case I'll blow you out of the sky. Just a warning. -
DarkonSo you are saying that it is not fair to campare Steubenvilles test scores with the other 4 public schools in Jefferson county?
Not trying to compare to schools on the other side of the state! These districts are here and the families are under the same economic situation.
Seems like apples to apples to me. -
Strapping Young LadNot syaing fair or unfair. Feel free to compare. But if you are looking for an indication of the quality of education available, then you'll need to look deeper than standarized test scores....
You can't force a kid to learn and not every kid starts with the same level of intelligence. So if we have kids who aren't what they call book smart and kids who just don't give a shit, then they'll bring test scores down.
It doesn't mean they don't have the resources available at school to be a good student. It just means they don't have the ability or they don't have the motivation, among other factors that come into play.
Other factors that have been shown to influence test scores: number of parents at home, parents educational background, type of community they live in, and poverty rate.
There are also questions that come up about how telling standardized test are when it comes to measuring learning. Standerdized tests are NOT designed to measure the quality of learning or teaching.... -

I was responding earlier to the assumption that Steubenville had a better education than other area schools.
Yes steubenville has nicer biuldings, but I don't believe the education is superior. -

unclestinkI say let's compare the test scores of the public schools in Jefferson County.
Use this link to the Ohio Department of Education's web site where they show the distict's report cards.
http://ilrc.ode.state.oh.us/Districts/District_List.asp?CountyName=Jefferson County
Let's see what the State says:
Buckeye Local effective
Edison Local effective
Toronto effective
Indian Creek effective
Steubenville excellent
There are the facts to prove it. -

What is most remarkable about this is that the government considers Steubenville to be an inner-city school district. In other words, there are a lot of Steubenville students who have two strikes against them before they ever set foot in school. I am not aware that any other school system in Jefferson County has this designation. It only proves what a terrific job the teachers and administrators are doing. This also says a lot for the citizens who have never turned down a school levy. Not only has a lot of money come from the levies, but the school system has such a good reputation that it has received some very generous grants that did not have to be paid back.unclestink wrote: I say let's compare the test scores of the public schools in Jefferson County.

On a personal note, I feel I received an outstanding education at SHS that really helped prepare me for college. -
DarkonI'm not tring to say Steubenville has a poor education system.
I'm saying it's not superior to the other schools in Jefferson county.
If you look at the OGT scores, ACT scores and students graduating with honors over the past ten years I believe they are all very comparable. Along with graduation rates.
The point was that people try and say the reason you get "Open Enrollment" football players was because of the better education.
No. The reason you get "open enrollment" players is for the tradition and winning with more exposure for these players.
I do not blame these athletes one bit.
But most of you know some of the things alot of local disticts have to hear that we are beneath you. -

Yeah, big bust years ago. From what I understand, the owners had a real nice 'other' business going on upstairs that was their downfall. Sad, b/c at one time the High Hat was the place to be. Good food, good booze, good place to go to have conversation with friends.snyds113 wrote: I worked there when I was 16 or 17.It was the High Hat then. That was the craziest place I ever worked.Things were going on then that were not so legal. If you know what I mean. -

Totally agree. Scholars program can be a joke. Kids cheat their way through and their classmates talk about it. And that's a fact jack.Darkon wrote: I'm not tring to say Steubenville has a poor education system.

Well honestly speaking I don't drink at all.Never.It was at the Mass. game over at cruisers tailgate with radcard and a few other mooney folk.Terp was there.I wasn't there very long and I don't claim to know those folks very well I had just met them.Anyway we were talking about the Huddle and a 6' person said "I'm Zalkath"and then explained to me how the huddle formed and the person said I don't post much anymore. So explain that to me?So maybe you were to drunk to remember.LOLZalKath wrote:

Well it realyy wasn't like that"upstairs"common misconception.Upstairs is just a little cubby hole with a desk. They keep supplies up there.Well they used to.And Steve Lam got a bad Rep out of that.It was all politics anyway.Bad blood.OUgrad wrote:

Strapping Young LadI'll never be one to tell you what a student or student athletes' reason for choosing one school over the next is. For one thing I don't know what every single kids reason is but I'm not naive enough to assume some/many don't come for the football.
Some may also find that what's available at SHS better suits their educational needs.
If the education is comparable at SHS to the other Jefferson County schools and you wanted to give yourself the best shot at getting noticed by a college, best available coaching, or wanted to experience what its like to play in Fawcett or PBTS, where are you gonna go???
You guessed it. -

That is true about the upstairs part, but there was plenty going on downstairs, in the kitchen, in the walkin cooler. I worked there also.snyds113 wrote:

snyds113So I take it you know the whole story?Steve didn't have anything to do with it.I know what was going on there first hand.I was just stating that upstairs wasn't a meeting place to make deals.
