Delphos St John should be playing Youngstown Ursuline for a title. Might be a good game.

Have you even looked at the DSJ thread? That's all people are doing is complaining about that game.

Anyways...congrats to the Irish on another State Championship! Way to bring it back to Youngstown again!

You guys should not even be proud of that win. You are clearly bigger and faster than anyone in D5 and it is unfair. Same with all catholic schools that recruit the best kids in their area. it is a joke that you are even allowed to do it. The only reason the OHSAA wont put you in your own division is because the attendane is driven by public schools. Private schools have no following. The games of 2 catholic schools would consist of 500 fans and not enough money to support that. That is it. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

That's the dumbest logic I have seen yet. But congrats...that's a tough task considering some of the crap I've read.

So the reason why the OHSAA won't split the privates and publics is because the public schools drive attendance? Wouldn't it follow then, that they would WANT to separate the playoffs so that they would have more attendance when two public schools play each other? And wouldn't it also follow then that they would be able to collect more revenue by having two separate tournaments?

So congratulations on the WORST argument made on here, yet. Kudos!
  • Red Rider Nation
No because the private schools could not support a separate attendance. Trust me I am very good friends with a member of the board of the OHSAA and that is the only reason it hasnt happened yet. I think he would know more than anyone. They realize the system is broken but are looking fo the right way to fix it. You guys winning by 30 and DSJ by 70 means it is still broke. You will find out soon that once they do you will cmplain becasue you will have to play St Eds and Ignatius where you are all even.

What was the attendance at the D2 game with both public school playing?
  • Red Rider Nation
I meant to say they cannot support a separate tournament.
  • Red Rider Nation
You want to try that one? 90% of the fans sitting on the Ursuline side were coaches and players from other schools. That is the way a lot of them are this weekend. Attendance is way down over 5 years ago because people know who will win the games when a private school plays. It is ridiculous and more and more people are not coming to the games

OK...first of all, I'm not an Ursuline guy. I'm a Mooney fan. I just recognize a good team when I see one.

Second...the OHSAA won't separate the playoffs because they know that if they do, the private schools will leave the OHSAA. Without the gates that top D1 private schools bring in, the OHSAA would hurt. Also, since the privates wouldn't be a part of the OHSAA, they would have no guidelines to go by. All you guys complaining and whining about recruiting have no idea what would take place if there were no OHSAA rules to follow.

THAT is the reason why the OHSAA won't separate the playoffs.

Here are the in-game updates from myvalleysports.com

    CANTON, OH
The Irish won the coin toss and elected to receive. On the third play from scrimmage, Mr. Football Akise Teague wasted no time as he caught a pass from Paul Kempe in the flat and scampered 73-yards for the first score of the game. However, Coldwater's Reese Klenke snagged his 98th catch of the season with a 53-yard touchdown grab for six points.

On the first play of the Irish's third drive, Jesse Curry raced 53-yards for a score to give the Irish a 15-7 lead midway through the opening period.

To cap off an Irish 98-yard drive, Teague scores his 45th touchdown of the season on a 46-yard run to push Ursuline ahead, 22-7, in the first minute of the second quarter. On Ursuline's next possession, Akise Teague took the ball out of the wildcat formation and galloped down to the endzone (63-yards) as the Irish lead big, 30-7 (9:34, 2nd Qtr).

Ursuline's Teague crosses the goal line again as he runs in his fourth touchdown of the first half, this time, from 16-yards out. On the Irish's next possession, UHS marched eighty yards which was topped off by a Paul Kempe quarterback keeper to send his team to the half up 44-7. The Irish have scored on six of their first seven possessions of the opening half. Teague ran for 192 yards on the ground in the first two quarters. Ursuline outgained the Cavaliers, 354 rushing yards to 8.

On the opening drive of the second half, Reese Klenke hauled in his 100th catch of the season as the receiver caught his second touchdown of the game, Coldwater trails, 44-14.

After a pair of turnovers (one by each team), Teague runs in his fifth touchdown today from 42-yards away to give Ursuline a 51-14 lead with four minutes remaining in the third period.

Coldwater's Klenke caught his third touchdown of the day to close the gap to, 51-21, but the Irish were too much this morning as Ursuline won their third straight Division V state championship (51-21). UHS joins St. Ignatius (5), Newark Catholic (4), Delphos St. John's (3), Cincinnati Moeller (3) and Versailles (3) as the sixth team in OHSAA history to win three straight state titles.

Ursuline's Akise Teague ran for 294 yards and hauled in 94 receiving yards enroute to 388 total stripes gained on the day. Teague tied a state championship-record of five total touchdowns in the title game with fellow Irish/Warren Harding Raider Delbert Ferguson (2000).

sherm....the OHSAA is "feeling the heat". It's rules and guidelines need revamped. Change is coming.
  • Red Rider Nation
Im not complaining and whining and the fact that you are from Mooney is no different. 4 years ago you were ranked No 5 in the nation in D4. How does that happen? Because you were bigger and faster than any other team. Yes Coldwater did beat you but that was lucky lets face it. Nobody in Youngstown is excited about either one of your programs because at the end of the day they are players that you took from Austin town, Warren harding, and Fitch and you know it. You will not win that argument with me. Do you know who we have to pull talent from in Orrville? Just Orrville. We do things the right way and that is why I am proud of our program. We won a state title in 98 and they may be the only one we will ever win but we did it the right way. You cant tell me in the State title gamesa where the 2 best teams from each division come together, that there are teams losing by 70 points. Thats ridiculous and I dont give a crap what anyone says. Pjut yourself in our shoes. If we graduate a lot of seniors, we rebuild next year. If you graduate a lot of seniors, you offer scholorships to good players to fill their spot.

Lucky of Coldwater to beat us? Maybe once. But if you don't remember...they did it to us twice. And you're right...the entire city of Youngstown does not get excited about Mooney or Ursuline because there are multiple schools in the Youngstown area. Just like the entire city of Cleveland won't get excited if Glenville wins the titles. Just like the entire city of Cincinnati didn't get excited when Winton Woods won the title. But wait?! Those are public schools!! They get all their players from within their school district!! How is it possible?!

So once again, it looks like the problem that most of you guys have isn't with private/public...but with urban/rural.

The two best teams from a division don't always meet in the title game. In many years, the two best teams are in the same region. I am a public school guy, but I am fine with the current playoff setup. Once my team is eliminated, I always root for the Mahoning Valley teams. Congrats to Ursuline.
