That's crazy..he still had 2-3 more years of being a very good WR.

Haha honestly though guise. He was still the best WR in the NFL and the Lions were a good RB and DB away from being SB contenders.

1984 Eric Dickerson and Primetime Deion?

    Still no.

He does but who knows of all of the other things that come into play for his decision.

Being rich, being able to maintain his health longer (with injuries having taken a recent toll on productivity, he may have decided it's better to preserve what he still has instead of continuing to take damage), being able to leave Detroit for good.

    Three great reasons!

Doesn't seem to ever negatively affect those that leave the game early.

    that was Robert Smith's philosophy

I applaud his decision. His body is wrecked.

So sad that we couldn't do more with him. I forever will hate Jim Schwartz for that 7-9 season that featured nothing but choke jobs. 6-3 with one of the best D-Lines in football and they got 1-6 down the stretch. A total kick in the stomach

Haha honestly though, they were only a few plays away from winning the SB.

Well Karlos Williams' fantasy value might just take a huge jump. If charges come from this, Shady might be cooked for 2016.

    Lynch retiring too, supposedly...only 29

Supposedly also never spent his salary during his playing time, lived off of his endorsements, well played.

Should become a teacher/mentor to 80% of the other players with 5 year long careers who blow it all and a left with battered brains.

Gronk has done the same thing, banking his salary, spending his endorsements

HOF vote in a few years will be interesting

    Megatron, BeastMode, Manning, Ware.
  • TBone14
I can see the Patriots trying to lure Megatron out of retirement for one last run at a title with Brady. Wouldn't shock me if he gets signed about week 10 next season or the year after.

I like Lynch but there is no way he makes it into the HOF. The other 3 should get in and Manning and Ware should be 1st ballots.

Is Megatron even a lock for the HOF?

I don't think he is. He's borderline. He will need a weak class in order to get in.
  • sleeper
I don't think he gets in. He's a good player but he never won a playoff game, never won a Super bowl, never won an MVP, he's 27th on all time receiving yards list, 22nd on Rec TD list, 14th on single season TDs, 43rd on career receptions, and 7th on Single season receptions...

The only thing he really has going for him is the single season receiving yards record which in the pass heavy league won't really last an eternity.

Yes but he did all of that in 9 seasons. I'm not saying he should be in, but it's not like those stats you listed was for a guy who played 17 seasons as a WR. Megatron was the best at his position for several NFL seasons, that allows for HOF talk. Question is, will the voters punish Megatron for only playing 9 seasons.

    IMO, they probably should.

While he was great for a few seasons, I just don't see it as enough. He was first team All-pro 3 times and second team All-pro once. As sleeper showed, his career numbers were not outstanding. He didn't seem to be a great leader or have the intangibles that elevated his team. He could do amazing things and made great highlights, but not a HOF.
  • Azubuike24
Unless you dominate for every season you play, you shouldn't get in the HOF after only 9 seasons. Compare him to Chad Johnson, who has little to no chance at the HOF. Really similar numbers...of course Calvin had the outrageous 2012 season...but pretty much they are the exact same player except for that.

Calvin - 135 games, 731 catches, 11619 yards, 83 TD, high of 122 catches, 1964 yards and 16 TD (yards and catches came in the same year), 6 Pro Bowls, 3-time consensus NFL All-Pro
Chad - 166 games, 766 catches, 11059 yards, 67 TD, high of 97 catches, 1432 yards and 10 TD (all came in different seasons), 6 Pro Bowls, 2-time consensus NFL All-Pro
