Didn't say I wanted him as the GM. Said I wanted him to be a consultant to help SELECT the GM. I agree with the Colts drafts.....pretty bad. I want them to bring someone in here with a football "mind" to pick football people. I don't want Haslam making this decision. I don't like Pettine. Even when we were 7-4 last year he made boneheaded coaching decisions that we just kind of ignored because we'd win the game.
Problem is, the Browns can never get a good coach to come here. So if we do fire Pettine, we'll continue to either get passed over by good coaches or choose not to interview good coaches. -

normally I would agree with this.... And he did start out 7-4. But the team has regressed the longer it's been under his command. The same issues and game day mistakes keep happening over and over like a recurrent nightmare. For instance, clock management issues seem to arise every game… Halftime adjustments??.. they appear not to exist.We do this way to often. I would rather keep a coach for more than a year or two and look terrible than to continuously switch out the head coach for another terrible coach. Switching coaxes every year does nothing. Sorry to say. And I'm not really a pett guy. -

If we don't get the right person in place to evaluate player and coaching talent, we will just stay in this infinite cycle. The most important person we hire will be the one who is making those decisions. He can be given whatever title (gm, president, etc.). The Browns may have one thing that could be attractive to a good personnel guy or a good head coach.....the #1 overall pick in the draft. If these guys think a Lynch or a Goff is a potential franchise QB they can win with, that may be in the Browns favor. Heard an interview with former GM Charlie Casserly and he said the Browns situation may not be good but it's not the worst as far as potential landing spots for a coach or GM. -

From a shear X's and O's competency standpoint you could argue he is the worst we've had since the return. I don't say that lightly as I detested Pat Shurmur.
Pettine more times than not just looks helpless out there, and he has been completely exposed by running an antiquated defensive system that doesn't work but an inability to adjust because he literally doesn't know anything else.
The lesson with both Shurmur and Pettine is that we are never to hire another coordinator who doesn't call his own plays during said team's glory run.
Rex was making the calls when that Jet's defense was really good, not Pettine. Pettine just latched onto his coattails in Baltimore and rode the guy as far as he could. -

That's why I think he needs to bring in a football guy/consultant to pick the GM. I don't want Haslam even making that decision...and then, once this is done, just step away and let the football guys do the football stuff. "Pad level" is the same issue with Danny Shelton. Dude stands straight up out of his stance and gets handled, one on one, by a center or guard. You draft guys, especially in the first few rounds, not only because they were good players in college, but because they possess skills and physical attributes that should make them good pro players. That so many of our early picks haven't progressed as the season has gone on is a failure of coaching.
