Bill Polian's last 8-10 drafts with the Colts abysmal. No thanks.

Didn't say I wanted him as the GM. Said I wanted him to be a consultant to help SELECT the GM. I agree with the Colts drafts.....pretty bad. I want them to bring someone in here with a football "mind" to pick football people. I don't want Haslam making this decision. It doesn't have to be Polian, just someone who knows football operations.

See, I'd agree with you and the "continuity" angle if Pettine wasn't fucking inept, but he is. He's Pat Shurmur bad, with more personality.

I don't like Pettine. Even when we were 7-4 last year he made boneheaded coaching decisions that we just kind of ignored because we'd win the game.

Problem is, the Browns can never get a good coach to come here. So if we do fire Pettine, we'll continue to either get passed over by good coaches or choose not to interview good coaches.

We do this way to often. I would rather keep a coach for more than a year or two and look terrible than to continuously switch out the head coach for another terrible coach. Switching coaxes every year does nothing. Sorry to say. And I'm not really a pett guy.
normally I would agree with this.... And he did start out 7-4. But the team has regressed the longer it's been under his command. The same issues and game day mistakes keep happening over and over like a recurrent nightmare. For instance, clock management issues seem to arise every game… Halftime adjustments??.. they appear not to exist.

If we don't get the right person in place to evaluate player and coaching talent, we will just stay in this infinite cycle. The most important person we hire will be the one who is making those decisions. He can be given whatever title (gm, president, etc.). My fear is that Jimmy will be the one making too many decisions and the train wreck continues.

The Browns may have one thing that could be attractive to a good personnel guy or a good head coach.....the #1 overall pick in the draft. If these guys think a Lynch or a Goff is a potential franchise QB they can win with, that may be in the Browns favor. Not saying it will tip the scale but it could be enticing.

Heard an interview with former GM Charlie Casserly and he said the Browns situation may not be good but it's not the worst as far as potential landing spots for a coach or GM.

His biggest attribute has been that he "looks" like a football guy and knows how to win the press conference. It has given him more of a free pass than most in this town have gotten.

From a shear X's and O's competency standpoint you could argue he is the worst we've had since the return. I don't say that lightly as I detested Pat Shurmur.

Pettine more times than not just looks helpless out there, and he has been completely exposed by running an antiquated defensive system that doesn't work but an inability to adjust because he literally doesn't know anything else.

The lesson with both Shurmur and Pettine is that we are never to hire another coordinator who doesn't call his own plays during said team's glory run.

Rex was making the calls when that Jet's defense was really good, not Pettine. Pettine just latched onto his coattails in Baltimore and rode the guy as far as he could.

That's why I think he needs to bring in a football guy/consultant to pick the GM. I don't want Haslam even making that decision...and then, once this is done, just step away and let the football guys do the football stuff. Stick to doing what you know, running gas stations/truck stops.

Sounds like there could be another team, besides the Cowboys, interested in Manziel.....

Any interest in Doug Marrone as a HC? I know he was a candidate for the Jets job last offseason.

He wouldn't be bad. I'd personally like a few others before him but he wouldn't be a bad hire

Was not a fan of him when he was originally rumored to be a candidate for the Browns (a couple years ago), and I am still not a fan of him.

Sounds like Haden & Hawkins will be headed to IR.

I don't see Meyer as a guy who thinks he must win in the NFL to feel accomplished. I think he's at his pinnacle in coaching now. Chatsports isn't breaking any story.

I agree that he's probably not going anywhere but it would be tempting to coach the team you grew up rooting for with a shitload of $$$ thrown your way AND partial ownership of the franchise.

#Browns HC Mike Pettine said some of OL Cam Erving's problems stem from pad level, technique, functional strength
Well shit, who'd have thought those would be necessary for an O-lineman to be successful.

The shit that comes out of Pettine's mouth sometimes is awe inspiring when it comes to how sad it is.

There is no way all of your young players are really this bad. The fact that there is no coaching, and no comprehension of how to develop young players is so glaringly obvious it has blinded us all by now.

"Pad level" is the same issue with Danny Shelton. Dude stands straight up out of his stance and gets handled, one on one, by a center or guard. At that position, if you're not commanding double teams, especially at that size, you're stealing a paycheck.

    Agonizingly spot on.
You draft guys, especially in the first few rounds, not only because they were good players in college, but because they possess skills and physical attributes that should make them good pro players. That so many of our early picks haven't progressed as the season has gone on is a failure of coaching.
