Definitely agree with all of this. Would be kinda cool to see Wayne reunite with Peyton but I know there is about a 2% chance of that actually happening even with Welker leaving they still have Latimer.

    Brandon Marshall to the J-E-T-S

Lol was just going to post it. What a terrible place for him to go. I've always liked Marshall.

Remember when the Jets traded for Harvin and propelled them into the playoffs? WOW!

It's not so much a "alonso for McCoy trade" as it is an "Alonso + 8 million to sign other good players for McCoy trade"

They could use that money to sign someone like Suh (or other really good FA's) to bolster the rest of the team in other areas...hell they might even be able to get AP if he becomes a FA

Sounds like the Colts & Browns were also interested.

We ever think the the NFL will tweak their salary cap at all? Say, like if a veteran was with your team for 10 years then you can resign him and only maybe half goes toward the cap?

anyways.......Will be interesting where some of these guys end up. Browns need to really make a run at a WR.

Didn't matter if they had Jerry Rice and Randy Moss on that team as long as they keep trotting sacks of shit like Geno & Vick out there at QB.

Like the NBA's vet's minimum? I doubt the NFL implements something like that so fans can grasp onto their old favorite players. A vets min would just give teams like the patriots to weasel their ways into getting great deals.

It would actually come into play very little. Maybe a 10 year vet with the team who can still play and contribute.

So now you are rewarding teams for having old players. All of a sudden the steelers get to keep troy and they get extra cap space. Yeah, fuck that. Either cut the guy or let him play. Pretty simple.

Maybe if your browns had any players worth a fuck for a number of years you may change your tune.
Was thinking Vince Wilfork, Reggie Wayne, Polamalu, a number of other guys throughout the years. MLB, without the cap, can keep veterans around at a reduced role and such later on in their career's. Dont necessarily think it would be a bad thing in the NFL.

lol at getting butt hurt, because your logic is fucking stupid. The Browns have a future HOFer at LT and I don't think half his salary should be counted toward the cap when he hits 10 years. Should Brady and Manning's contracts only count toward half the cap? How about Brett Favre when he played for Minnesota? Like I said, no point in rewarding teams for having older players. When you offer an older player a contract, you know what you are getting into, and now the Steelers have to deal with it, like most teams do. Cut him or let him play. The NFL doesn't need a fucking vets policy so people like you can feel warm and fuzzy inside seeing their favorite players retire on their teams.

Edit: The MLB system is not even close to being as good the NFL. Those teams still have to PAY those guys and it is hurting them. Look at the Yankees with the Arod contract. I bet they wish they could use that 25m a year to spend on other guys.

I don't see it happening, but I've always liked the idea of counting vets less against the cap. Edit to add assuming they've been with the same team. Favre with the Vikings and Manning with Denver are not good examples.

Encourages player loyalty, benefits teams who draft well, makes it easier for teams to retain good players (offer market rates for a less than market cap hit), and would theoretically positively impact fan relations.

Manning and Favre at Minny wouldnt count.
I meant to say 10 years with the same team.

As far as the MLB...they dont have a cap so it really doesnt matter, but they can sign older guys to stick around a little longer. If MLB had a cap I imagine a guy like Jeter woulda been cut already. I prefer a cap like NFL over no cap like MLB.

I wasnt even necessarily thinking about Polamalu in particular. Just something that pops into my mind each year around this time. I would put into the rules that they would not be able to do a sign and trade like the NBA has done.

Of course some things would have to be worked on. Such as if a guy was coming into a new contract at year 8. SIgns for 4 years for 40 million. Some safeguards would have to be put into place that state they couldnt have the figures be 2 million, 2 million, and then 36 over the last two and get that slashed in half.
In a few years if Thomas is still playing at a pretty good level, maybe not all pro, but still pretty good I think the browns should be able to pay the guy a good sum and have half not count

Free agency has almost killed the idea of "rivalries" in the NFL, imo. When players stayed with their teams for most, if not all, of their careers, they built up a general hatred for each other. Now, with players hopping from team to team, most don't know the histories of the teams they are coming to.

    Was just a thought.
Big difference between sticking around and sticking around with 25 million (per year) on your pay roll. Yankees are desperate for arod to retire and the angels/tigers/nats will all be desperate to have pujols/cabrera/scherzer retire after a couple years.

It's a business. If you aren't performing to your value you either can agree to restructure your contract, or gtfo.

Also, you already get rewarded enough if you draft well. Drafting well= wins. No reason to supplement your cap space because you draft well.

..and you can add votto into that discussion as well, and Cueto when he signs some place within the next year.

The MLB slant was probably ill advised on my part.

As I said, it wouldnt happen often. 10 year vet with the same team.

Steelers are notorious for letting their big names go.....I hate it as a fan but also completely understand it.

Yeah, over the years they have allowed many to leave, cut quite a few. Just the price of doing business and when you have a team that has had a pretty good track record for a number of years filled with quite a few core guys making good $$$...it has to be done. Rarely ever make a splash in FA as they dont have the cap room

LIke that...I was thinking about your argument against a veteran cap hit after 10 years. I agree with some of your arguments and something else popped into mind to tweak it. Of course it wouldnt be fair for the elite players like a Brady to only count as half. WHat about this....once you been at a team for 10 years a team can keep you around after that and only half of your salary counts toward the cap. The kicker is this though....the MAX a team can offer you under this plan would be your average yearly BASE salary for those ten seasons. NOt bonuses and all that other stuff. The elites like Brady and such wouldnt really count as they arent taking that type of pay cut, but it would be the older guys like Wayne, Willfork, Polamalu, many others who have been with their team, just not where they used to be, but a team may want to keep around for experience, less PT, leadership for the younger guys but just cannot justify the salary.

Hell, Haslam has tried for a year to get Manzier to do Human Growth Hormones. The cocaine must have cancelled out the HGH.

Yeah i know...I'm banned from the thread now. Oh well it was worth it to slip that one in.

I'm glad the Bengals didn't go after Jones. He was a speed guy who has lost a step
