Still not over how excited I am. A win vs Portgual and we could legit win the group.

We would have to beat Germany, which isnt happening.

As long as we at least tie Portugal now(and assuming Germany beats Ghana obviously) we'll be sitting pretty good correct? We win that one and it's a lock that we're in, but assuming we tie them all that needs to happen then is we have to hope they don't kill Ghana and we don't get killed by Germany and we're sitting good from what I can tell right?

Not concerned about winning the group, just getting out of it's good enough for me.

Pretty much. A tie/win vs. Portugal and we are in. A loss to Portugal would mean we would have to beat or tie Germany to have a shot(and with Portugal's goal differential in the tank, a good shot).

Yes if we tie with Portugal and don't lose bad to Germany we should make it in. We are +5 on goal differential to Portugal right now.

Thank you. That's what I thought, but hadn't seen the exact tiebreakers and everything. Hopefully Jozy can be back for Sunday so the US can be at 100%.

Jozy isn't going to be back. He might be out the whole tourney. I've done a similar thing while playing and there was 0% chance I was back in a week. 2-4 is way more likely, and even then he might just re pull it.

Definitely not optimistic about it. Think Aron Johannsson will get the start or will they go with Wondo next match? I'm not a knowledgeable soccer guy but seemed like Johannsson was pretty underwhelming overall yesterday. In games I've watched it seems like Wondo has a knack for getting things to happen and creating a spark, though that could be because the competition wasn't very good.

Aron wasn't great but he also wasn't put into a great situation. He doesn't play well with his back toward goal (something that Jozy does really well), but Wondo isn't going to do that well either. I think there needs to be a change in strategy up top to play to their strengths with Jozy out for the rest of the time. Aron plays reasonably well with the ball at his feet, just doesn't have the strength to hold guys off on his own.

That said, I think Aron gets the call but generally the strategy shifts so he's not in a "hold the ball while guys catch up" role.

They were talking last night on the ESPN World Cup show that they may move Dempsey up front. I don't see Jozy returning at all. Just hoping it's nothing serious like a tear because he'd miss significant time this upcoming season.

US-Ghana had a 7.0 overnight rating on ESPN; NBA Finals Game 5 on ABC had a 6.8 for comparison. ESPN rating also doesn't include estimated 5.2m watching on Univision and WatchESPN.

2nd-highest rated group stage match for the US ever (behind only US-England in 2010, which was played on a Saturday on ABC).

I like Johannson, but would rather him come in off the bench later and start Wando. I feel like he just makes more things happen. Kind of like Zusi, wish he could get in more. Also, how is there not another defender in the entire country better than Beasley? He is embarrassing.

    Wow, Algeria up on Belgium.

The problem with Beasley is he plays midfield for his club and has all his career. For him to make the US team again they moved him to left back. He's still got speed but it always looks like he's not comfortable playing that position when we play the big boys.

    Huge save from Algeria.

Side note, loss from Belgium here could affect US. H1 plays G2 in round of 16, would rather it be Russia than Belgium.

And of course sideshow bob puts it in

Total waste and it sickens me United signed that douche. He did nothing all season.

I'll be an Akron homer but I'd like Deandre Yedlin to get some time. He started a little rocky but came around in the warmup matches. Doubt they throw him into the fire with Portugal and Germany next.

I like Yedlin too he's super speedy but his defense isn't as strong as Beasley and I think that's why he doesn't beat him out yet. But I see Yedlin improving a ton over the new few years and having a bright future. Hoping maybe he goes and plays in Europe.

Beasley is a must, for the simple fact out CB play 100x better with him next to them. Whether it's communication, trust, spacing etc, it all works better when Bealsey is at LB. Of course, if Besler can't go, who knows lol.

I want AJ to play up top from the start and have a different approach. Even Bradley said the quick goal completely altered how they attacked. Would like to see what he can do when he isn't in a holding position...a position really only Jozy can play, and why it was so crucial for him to be on form.

I'm interested to see what changes Jurgen makes. Dempsey up front with Johannson?

Jozy out makes me wish Gomez made the squad, big fan of his.
  • Laley23
Also, David Luiz is Sideshow Bob...NOT Marouane Fellaini.
