Augusta loves firm and fast, but firm and fast makes it difficult for charges to happen on Sunday. Water the greens and put the pins in spots that guys can get at them so there is a bit of drama.

Only 7 guys out of a 90 man field broke par. Augusta went through the phase a few years back culminating in Zach Johnson's win where the greens were like a concrete parking lot and it was boring to watch.

I don't want the winner shooting -20, but only 7 guys breaking par tells you they set the course up too hard and sucked the fun out of the tournament.
It would have been fun if someone not named Bubba got their shit together. Just lame that no one made any sort of charge at all

Every shot we see outside of the top 4 was a shot we knew would be great. They take all the suspense out of someone making a charge. I know there wasnt one, but the point stands. We didnt see MAJ get to -4 until the putt that did it. We didnt see a lot of guys who made good runs into the top 5 at any point. They faltered, so it didnt matter, but still wouldve rather see them make a run and then watch them give the strokes back more than Bubba and Spieth walking up the fairway for 10 minutes.

On a positive note from the coverage, maybe CC will shut up about the Tiger/CBS hard on he always preaches about. Its just what CBS does, they show those in contention.
    Agree with all of this.

I prefer NBC's coverage of the U.S. Open and British Open myself, as I am more partial to Dan Hicks than Jim Nantz and enjoy the golf analysis of Roger Maltbie and Johnny Miller, even if he is a critical know-it-all who acts like he invented the game. All of those golf analysts are.

It sucks that fucking Fox is covering the U.S. Open this year (I believe). Who the hell is going to cover the event? If it's Joe Buck I'm not sure I'll even watch.

NBC has the best coverage. Their producer, Tommy Roy, is a huge fan of showing as much live Golf as possible. Now, its not exactly easy to do, so you will obviously get some taped stuff from some guys who you dont know or whatever. But he will basically show every birdie putt and long par putt or whatever and every approach from guys who are in contention or are known by the public. It leads to a lot more quick cuts and a lot more drama, as you dont know the result like you do with CBS.

Masters ratings were down 25% this year and the lowest since 2004.

Might have been because of the lack of Tiger, but the lack of drama did more to the ratings than anything.

People don't want to watch the Masters play like a U.S Open where only a handful of guys are breaking par. There is no drama, no roars and no excitement with that kind of golf.

Billy Payne needs to get over himself next year and set the course up so guys can score.

In addition to the absence of Tiger, the fact that Phil, Sergio, Ernie and Tom Watson (well, he's almost 70 ha) all missed the Friday cut played a huge role in the lack of drama that you discuss. A crazy stat: This year's Masters marked the first since 1994 that neither Phil nor Tiger played the weekend at Augusta.

Maybe next year they can get Happy Gilmore to enter.

Yeah, NBC's coverage is awesome. I've never really sat back to compare the two styles (NBC and CBS) before, but you hit it on the mark. At least NBC still has rights to The Open Championship, which is my favorite event to watch each year anyway.

NBC doesn't have The Open Championship. It's been on ESPN/ABC for the last several years.
  • hilliardfan
NBC has the Players Championship and the U.S. Open television coverage. ESPN has The Open television coverage and CBS the PGA Championship.

    Great fact.

I was confusing it with the U.S. Open, apparently. How could I forget Scott Van Pelt's great analysis. ESPN isn't bad, though.

That really sucks that NBC now only holds nothing.

I mentioned Fox taking over rights to the U.S. Open in a post above, but apparently that doesn't begin until 2015 (I believe). So hopefully that means one more year with the NBC crew.

NBC gets all of the team competitions. As well as the early and late season events. They get the FedEx Cup playoffs and pretty much everything up until the Masters. CBS has it's attention on the NFL and NCAA basketball.

NBC gets a decent amount of high profile events.

And yes, NBC has weekend coverage of the US Open this year. ESPN has Thursday/Friday.
  • Laley23
NBC will be showing the Ryder Cup 100% live this year as well, which is awesome. First time ever.

I think it's actually the Golf Channel that will.
  • wildcats20
Sorry, the GC has Fridays coverage. NBC has the weekend.

    Still fucking awesome.

True. I just wish that NBC had a major, which it appears as if they will not after this year.

I don't see the FOX relationship sticking. So I bet it will be back to NBC in a few years.
  • wildcats20
    Whoa. Never mind.

It's a 12 year agreement with FOX. Holy shit.
  • reclegend22
Yeah, when I read that, I couldn't believe it. Johnny Miller will be dead by the time that NBC has a chance to regain rights.

My question is, Who leads the coverage? Joe Buck? Gus Johnson? That'd be fucking terrible. My guess is Fox has a golf guy lined up or will pluck someone from another network.
  • wildcats20
Miller already said he won't jump.

I bet it's a Steve Sands type guy or one of the lesser known GC guys.

lol, could you imagine Gus Johnson calling golf???

I read where Miller said something to the effect that it's a sad day for the USGA that money was more important than a good golf crew. I can't blame his bitter disappointment. NBC had done a great job with the event for more than 20 years.

Lol. No. It'd definitely be like the movie Happy Gilmore.

"Phil Mickelson, from the parking lot! Pure!!!!!!!!!!"

lol, as hard as it would be for the purists, I'd love to see it--if only for a round :D

Wouldnt be surprised if Whit Watson made the jump. Guy is really good, but at NBC he is stuck behind Dan Hicks.
