MLB 2014 Random Chatter

Azubuike24Kershaw is 63-25 with a staggering ERA of 2.17. Cueto is 2nd, at 2.50. It's incredible how far ahead of the curve Clayton is...

Because he's barely an average 2nd half pitcher in his career. Nobody gives a shit what you do from April to June. He doesn't pitch in the worst pitcher's park either, unless he spent his entire career in Colorado and I wasn't aware.Azubuike24;1639342 wrote:Amazingly, since the start of 2011, Johnny Cueto is 43-22 with a 2.5 ERA, all in the worst pitcher's park. He's no Kershaw, but damn, people wouldn't even seemingly rank him in the top 10...

MulvaYou were right about Kershaw, though. I was looking at his career ERA numbers, not the last 4 years.
-
Azubuike24Modified, top 5-10 worst for his career. I'd say most of it is health. When he pitches, the results are there. Heck, his only real shot in the playoffs (minus, the 1-game playoff last year), he was hurt.

He has literally been worse in the 2nd half every season of his career, aside from last year when he only pitched 12 innings after the all-star break. Nobody mentions him because he's never deserved being mentioned.Azubuike24;1639346 wrote:Modified, top 5-10 worst for his career. I'd say most of it is health. When he pitches, the results are there. Kershaw is on his way to a 3rd Cy Young in 4 years. The only time he didn't win in that span, he finished 2nd. I know you're a Reds fan, but it is honestly a joke to even bring up Cueto.
It's a joke to bring up any modern pitcher comparing to Kershaw, but Cueto has finished top 10 one time in his career in Cy Young voting, and that was 4th. -

Ironman92Dan UGHla in his 3rd game at 2nd for the Giants....now has 3 errors and getting booed by the home crowd
-
HereticThe problem with referring to Cueto as one of the game's best right now:
In his career, it's this year and the past three when he ascended to become a potentially elite player. Since he's one good start away from 162 innings (the number needed to qualify for ERA championships and the like) for this year, we'll assume he makes it. That would be 2/4 years during his "great" period that he qualified. No matter how good a guy is during a period, he's not going to get the national press if he has a reputation for being shaky health-wise. -
SportsAndLadyCrazy trade in the AL
Lester and Gomes to the As for Cespedes -
Ironman92Nice
-
SportsAndLadyBilly Beane is awesome. Has some serious balls
Sees his opportunity to win a WS and goes for it...cough cough wake the fuck up jocketty -
Ironman92Trading Cespedes is ballsy....he's a very talented and liked player. I wouldn't have done it. Lester is a playoff stud though....
I love it as a baseball fan, but would've never pulled the trigger. -

First Samardzjia and now Lester to go along with Kazmir--wow.SportsAndLady;1640371 wrote:Crazy trade in the AL

Midstate01Red Sox trade raping today.

Azubuike24Looks like the Red Sox turned two expensive 30 year old pitchers plus Jonny Gomes into Joe Kelly, Allen Craig and Yoenis Cespedes.
Walt Jocketty? Earth to Walk Jocketty? Have you been asleep for the past two days? -

Even if jocketty thinks this season isn't goin anywhere, make moves like this to improve next years team or the farm system.Azubuike24;1640425 wrote:Looks like the Red Sox turned two expensive 30 year old pitchers plus Jonny Gomes into Joe Kelly, Allen Craig and Yoenis Cespedes.

Just sitting tight is not a very smart strategy. -
thavoiceThink I read yesterday that 19 teams were either leading their divisions or within 5 games of the postseason?
Means quite a few teams looking for that guy who will put them over the top.
I agree the reds need to do something, but it takes two to tango and if there just isnt anything to make the team that much better and hurts the future than what are they to do?
Chapman is probably their biggest prize right now to trade.
I would love to see something done too but realize it just isnt that easy. -
Azubuike24Exactly. However, if you're on the fence to buy or sell, you should at least consider what the market brings. There are more buyers than sellers. The prices for players has been pretty high, and a few teams have shown serious interest in paying up. To sit back and do nothing is a joke.
I'm not saying deal Latos, Cueto or Chapman. Those would be big moves. However, at least put nearly anyone with even a thought of not being around after this year or next out there as a feeler and see what you hear back. -
Azubuike24Why not explore dealing Leake or Simon?
Are you committed to both in the rotation next year? Are they sold on Stephenson by next year? What are their thoughts on Cingrani? Leake, Cueto, Latos and Simon are all free agents by the end of 2015. Why not start thinking about who you want and who you will attempt to keep? The others, think about making a move?
I mean, imagine if we could've had Joe Kelly and Allen Craig for Mike Leake and Broxton (eating some salary). Please tell me you wouldn't consider that? And that St. Louis may not have bit? -

and I imagine that is what he is doing. Putting guys out there to see what they can get. For whatever reason I get the feeling that Chapman is untouchable although he is probably the most expendable.Azubuike24;1640429 wrote:Exactly. I know what Walt will say if nothing is done....Getting BP and JV back will be just like getting two big bats in trades but if today goes by without a move it will be hard to justify in my book -

I would set Simon go in a heartbeat. His stock is falling and I think the window to max what they could have gotten is closed. He has done a fantastic job but everyone was just waiting for him to hit the wall.Azubuike24;1640431 wrote:Why not explore dealing Leake or Simon?

Only reason I would be a little hesitant on Leake is I see JC and/or ML gone when their deals are up and the question mark with Cingrani's health may complicate the future. -
Azubuike24Then Walt is in denial. BP won't be back for another month. The entire organization is being silent about Votto. To even be factoring them into 2014 anymore means he's either completely ignorant or he's just that naive.
On what planet, especially with the Cardinals significantly improving their team, makes him at all feel this season is going to possibly be salvaged? -

Until you read what was reported about Leake's agent. Paraphrasing...
"we are looking at Homer Bailey's numbers from his rookie year through year 5...and Mike's being as good/better. We're targeting a similar contract."
To me, that equals GOOD RIDDANCE. Trade him while his ERA is mid-3 and he's still under control another year. He WON'T be a Red past 2015 anyway. -

Agreed. BP or JV wont be significant help this season. Cards struck gold, at least in the first game, with Pierzinski (sp). Who knwos about Masterson...he was below .500 with over a 5 ernie this season and they gave up a good prospect but they at least tried something to help themselves this year. They know ya just have to make it and then who knows what happens.Azubuike24;1640435 wrote:Then Walt is in denial. BP won't be back for another month. Has to be just talk, but if that is even close then yeah...he is gone. He wont get HB numbers anywhere. I like the guy, love watching him pitch, but just dont see him as a top tier guy when his deal is up.Azubuike24;1640436 wrote:Until you read what was reported about Leake's agent. Paraphrasing...
