The end of the KO in the NFL

If so, why not just go to the free kick like the one used after a safety?

Anyone know the percentages of passes attempted today versus say 20 years ago? With the way the nfl, then ncaa and nfhs have created rules encouraging teams to pass more. Many of these viscous hits occur on passing plays, just roughly I would guess that the percentage of pass attempts per game have rising sharply. So once again the NFL acts like they want player safety, yet give in to the morons who watch the games who only want points on the board! lol

Good point on the passes....QB and WR often get destroyed.

In 1982, teams on average threw the ball 31.5 times per game (50.5%), and ran the ball 30.8 times per game (49.5%) (source: http://www.databasefootball.com/leagues/leagueyear.htm?yr=1982&lg=nfl).

So far in 2012, teams on average throw the ball 35.1 times per game (56.4%), and run the ball 27 times per game (43.6%) (source: http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/passing, http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/rushing)

Why not just have the team that doesn't score get the ball, first and 10 at their own 20 yard line?

Avoids kickoffs, punts, any chance of injuries on unnecessary plays, etc.

Exactly what I thought the solution would be

Quit fucking with the game. I swear, Gooddell is the worst commissioner of them all but gets a pass because the NFL is the most successful by default. He just can't stop screwing with the very nature of the sport. We all know why there's Thursday games now. We all know why there's the late season ability to change game times. We know why the kickoffs are being screwed with.

The problem is, once they do away with kickoffs, there will be a new 'most dangerous play in the NFL' that will be looked at. Then when that one is dealt with, there'll be another one. And another. There always has to be 'the most dangerous play'. Unless they're all the exact same play with the exact same outcome.

A 4th-and-15 is a joke. Want to take kickoffs out of the game. Make scoring more difficult. There will be fewer kickoffs to rough up the players, then.

    This.
Let's not let muscular guys play either. You can't be mean or tough. Avoid contact at all costs.

    Fuck Goodell.

if the NFL was really serious about stopping injuries, they would get rid of the helmet and shoulder pads, and then we would have rugby. They need to start teaching people how to tackle instead of just launching your head or shoulder at someone trying to blow them up and end up on a highlight reel.

I assume the 4th and 15 is about as successful as the onside kick?

Put them in flags pls....or just have a track meet between the teams.

    Raiders are contenders!

Onside kicks via the punt would be death defying.

They could just punt the ball about 15 feet in the air very softly, and the players would get LIT UP while the ball is in the air

He is going to single-handedly ruin the NFL.

    They'd drop the baton.

    What?

The onside kick wouldnt happen. You either punt it, or go for the 4th and 15 as a substitute for the onside.

I was talking about if they decided to punt (like a safety).

    ??? You're confusing me.

A punt for an on sides kick? It would just be a shitty punt?

It's not about the NFL "wanting player safety". It's about the NFL being able to protect themselves when/if they are sued by being able to say look at all the things we tried to do.

There's something to this comment. Look at how the helmets have improved while the should pads continue to decrease in size. If they went back larger shoulder pads they would increase as the weapon of choice.

It was brought up earlier why they don't, instead of a kickoff, just punt it (like how they do for a safety). I was saying how crazy it would be to have an onside punt...was just kind of talking out loud, didn't realize it would cause so much confusion.

Or maybe I'm just confused..idk fuck

Even if one thinks it's a good idea to eliminate the kickoff, why would you do it in such a way that completely changes the game?

Looks like the only reason they got the penalty was because he got hurt. Both hits were clean and didn't even hit him in the head. The NFL is stupid.

Yeah, was just piggy backing what someone else said about the irony of a WR getting hurt on the 4th and 15 play. And yes, he was clearly hit in the head, I don't know if you noticed he was unconscious lol. Second hit tagged him in the head. It was helmet to helmet, look later in the video at the slow mo replay.

Their helmets touched incidentally. Not a penalty.

Correction...shouldn't be a penalty. But in the NFL, anytime helmets touch, they call it. I hate the NFL.
