espn Friday Night Fights 2012

FNF returns for its 14th season this week.
They have 30 shows scheduled for 2012 starting the circuit in Key West this year.

Bernardo Osuna takes over for Brian Kenny in the studio this year leaving Teddy Atlas as the only original member of the commentating crew. Joe Tessitore will still be ringside with Teddy.

FNF has been my favorite boxing series on any channel for a long time, been watching the show since its debut. Get to see everything from four round pro debuts to 12 round title fights to boxers in their final fight. Good fights, bad fights, great fights, mismatches, wicked ko's and of course the occasional goofy decision. Got it all on this show with a fraction of premium channel budgets.

Super middleweights in the 10 round main event:
    Dyah Davis(20-2-1) vs Alfonso Lopez(22-1)
Neither of these guys are world beaters, looks like a good match up on paper.

Steve Martinez(11-0) vs Denis Douglin(13-1) on the undercard(8 rounds)
Here is the rest of the line up:http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=631766
I'm thinking a few boxers who are not currently scheduled to be on the televised portion of the show will end up being on it:)

I don't always get to watch FNF live but the dvr is set to record every show. I intend on bumping this thread to the top with the matchups on the weeks espn has an episode, not sure if I will stick to it but that is my intent for now.:)

Wish I was home to catch this. FNF is one of my favorite also. They typically have good fights and they show boxers who probably wouldn't get tv press.

I thought they got rid of FNF years ago.

FNF starts in January and finishes when football starts every year.
They got rid of their old Wednesday night fight series 3 or 4 years ago.

I know Showtime is having their free weekend, but not sure if it starts tonight. If it does a good prospect Luis Ramos Jr is in with his toughest oppenent yet, Ray Beltran, who is always a tough out.

The Douglin/Martinez fight was a good scrap, good action start to finish with Douglin winning a split decision.
First fight of the first show this year and another undefeated prospect gets derailed on FNF, good stuff.
We will probably be seeing Douglin again on FNF after that performance and the network will love talking up about Douglin being trained by his mother.

The main event was crap. Gives an inidication of how far Pavlik has fallen too, he had a lot of trouble with Lopez last spring and the guy couldn't win more than few rounds off Davis who is a club-fghter living off his daddy's name imo.

    khujo;
You sure this is supposed to be a free preview weekend for Showtime?
My cable doesn't have it on.

Yeah it definitely was, they mentioned it several times during the broadcast. Hopefully you found it, because both fights were good. Beltran arguably got robbed again, against another undefeated prospect.

The opening fight (Perez v Figueroa) was non stop action for the 6 rounds it lasted.

I didn't get see them yet but it's not like it's hard to find the fights after the fact:) I keep HBO but not Showtime.

Yeah. I didn't catch the first fight, but I got home in time for the main event. Not the way you want to start off a new season, when the play-by-play guy is talking about doing radio for a bowl game blowout and how that was so much more thrilling than the fight he's currently watching.

    Guess i'll put this here

    @FloydMayweather Floyd Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao I'm calling you out let's fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see.
  • stlouiedipalma
I also like FNF. It gives us an opportunity to see the up-and-comers. HBO's Boxing After Dark and Showtime's ShoBox are good, but FNF isn't afraid to broadcast from some real rinky-dink venues. It just seems more real on FNF.

BTW, I just don't see Mayweather/Pacquiao ever happening. Neither fighter wants it, so they hide behind their promoters who come up with B.S. excuses to call off talks.

    Neither fighter wants it
Mayweather just tweeted that he did an hour ago

PBF never ducked Pac... It's always been Pac and Bob Arum ducking PBF.

PBF would work Pac, and they know it. Instead of letting it happen, they want to avoid the fight so people will still have the debate as to "who's better"... Leave it up in the air, in a sense.

PBF has wanted a "Big fight" for May 5th in Vegas. He hinted several times he was talking about Pac and then finally said that's who he's been wanting.

The jail sentence came out and everybody though PBF was somehow "ducking"... Then the sentence is pushed back to June, allowing PBF the chance to fight on May 5th still...

There is ONE group who does not want this fight, and that is not the group of PBF.

I think that Arum isn't going to let Floyd in the ring with Pacquaio until he either gets control of Mayweather or at least gets Golden Boy cut out of the promotion.
Doesn't look like either is going to happen.

Osuna asked Teddy what his thoughts were on Pac/Floyd not happening and what he said was interesting.
Teddy basically said that since Manny & Floyd command 20+ million for any other opponent they are both wanting 40+ to fight each other. After paying the fighters their up front money and cost of the promotion they would have $100+ million into the event and need to make it all back in one night.
That's a big risk to take on one fight and Teddy doesn't think they want to do it. Not as long as there are other credible opponents out there.

Doesn't look like either will happen.
Arum has zero leverage to get Floyd under contract and although Floyd is not under contract to Golden Boy they are the only promoter he has worked with since he left Top Rank.

Between fights on FNF Osuna asked Teddy what his thoughts were on the fight not happening and what he had to say was interesting.
Teddy said that since Pac and Floyd command $20+ million for any other opponent they are both demanding $40+ million for this fight. After the promoters pay the fighters their up front money and promotion costs they are $100 million into the event and have to make it all back in one night.
That's a big risk to take on one fight and Teddy doesn't think they want to do it. Not as long as they have other credible opponents anyway.
