If Eli Manning Wins Another Super Bowl...is He the Best Manning?

  Someone asked me this and I immediately thought "you gotta be kidding?"
  
  Then I started to think. Then looked up the numbers.
  
  Peyton will be 36 at the start of next year, 13 years in the league.
  Eli will be 30 at the start of next year, 8 years in the league.
  
  Peyton in 208 games, 54828 yards, 399 TD's, 198 INT's, 1 ring.
  Eli in 121 games, 27579 yards, 185 TD's, 129 INT's, 2 rings?
  
  Obviously I'm projecting forward, but that's part of the question. And I'll continue to do so below. Eli just had a near 5000-yard season where he threw a career-high 29 TD's. The NFL has become a pass-first league, and the Giants have shown the ability, at least this year, to air it out like an elite team. Peyton on the other hand, has an uncertain future, and even if he returns, he returns to a team with some serious turmoil. He might never be the same player again. It's an interesting debate, especially if Eli just has, say 4000 yards and 25 TD's for the next 5 years. If he grabs another ring, who knows.

  If Eli won 2 more rings he would still not considered better than Peyton. Unless of course over the next 5 or so years he gets 2 mvps and has 5 35+ td seasons and cuts his ints in half.

  If Eli wins two (or more) SBs to Peyton's one, Peyton never plays another down, and Eli gets to 35 years old with ~50000 passing yards, 400 TDs, 200 INTs I think you'd have an argument. But to get to that level Eli's average season over the next five would have to be 4,500 yards, 43 TDs and 14 INTs.
  
  Basically, barring a miracle, he won't be anywhere close to Peyton's TD numbers (most he's ever had in a season is 31), will be way over in INTs (only been below 14 INTs in two seasons, one of which he only played 9 games), and will probably end up well short in yards too.

  Neal Dahlen has 7 super bowl rings as a player/coach. He is the GOAT. Best player ever to play in the NFL. (Because of his rings)

  Absolutely not. I'm not someone who believes that championships should determine a players worth, especially in football where winning the game is dependent on so many other players.

  The "rings" argument has SOME relevance in a sport like basketball (less people), but with football it is meritless. You have to look at individual performance more than team success.

  I think Eli needs to do more than that. He still has a few more years, but it'll be near impossible for him to match his brother's numbers.

  I'll also say, I don't put Peyton on the same pedestal some do. He's great, but I wouldn't consider him the best of his generation.

  I know a guy who went to high school in New Orleans with their older brother, Cooper. The scary thing is he says Cooper was the best of all three. If not for serious injuries, he likely would have played in the NFL as well.

  Btw is it me or would Peyton Manning be one of the best coaches of all time? He will outcall any coach in the league and motivates his guys well

  Better question is (when) Aaron Rodgers wins his second in a row SB will he finally be considered as good as P. Manning and T. Brady? Also how cool is it that the NY Jets are not in the play-offs?

  I had to bump this thread only because I've heard the same topic now brought up numerous times since last night's game...
  
  Eli is nearing the top 50 or already in the top 40-50 in all major passing statistics. You have to figure at his age, he will break into the top 20 (if not higher) of all of them before all is said and done. Nobody can dispute his performance in getting the two rings as well.
  
  Peyton, well, might not play another down...and at this point, we have no idea what he will be.

  Peyton is 10000x better than his brother even if Eli wins 10 Super Bowls. This is a team game, Eli did not win any Super Bowl on his own.

  I agree with you BTW, but this is actually from someone who has seen both play from the beginning of college until now. This "eye test" stuff seems to get lost as time goes on, and as we start to rank the all-time greats. Rings, stats and rankings tend to become more important as their playing days fade into the past.
  
  I do think it's a legit debate though. Eli, while not dominant, has been pretty damn rock solid in the playoffs during both runs. He also backed it up this year with a great regular season, and in both seasons, definitely handled some adversity to get it done. It's not like he took a supremely-talented team and just simply didn't mess it up...
