If Eli Manning Wins Another Super Bowl...is He the Best Manning?

  • Tiernan
Not when Peyton is healthy. How many people drooling all over Eli this morning would seriously take Eli over Brady if you were given a chance to pick one to start a NFL team?

Nobody with any real football knowledge takes Eli. Same question with Rodgers and Brees and smart money takes Rodgers.

This "eye test" stuff seems to get lost as time goes on, and as we start to rank the all-time greats. Rings, stats and rankings tend to become more important as their playing days fade into the past.

I do think it's a legit debate though. Eli, while not dominant, has been pretty damn rock solid in the playoffs during both runs. He also backed it up this year with a great regular season, and in both seasons, definitely handled some adversity to get it done. It's not like he took a supremely-talented team and just simply didn't mess it up...
It's hard to be in the elite conversation when you have Peyton, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers setting the standard for elite QB. I don't think Eli is even close to any of these QBs.

Huh....didn't realize Super Bowl wins was an individual statistic.

What is an individual stat in football? You need all 11 guys on your side of the ball to accomplish anything in a team sport.

if im not mistaken i think i read before that all the other quarterbacks with two rings are in the HOF except jim plunkett??

I'll take eli. Both top 15 all time for me.

So by this logic, Victor Cruz is a better WR than Calvin Johnson because he has a Super Bowl ring?

Where did I say that? Who (iyo) is the best receiver of All time in the NFL?
  • Azubuike24
To me, nobody compares to the complete package of Randy Moss. In his prime, giving 100%, there hasn't ever been a more unstoppable WR.

The obvious answer is Jerry Rice...but defining "best of all-time" is tough. Are we talking talent? Stats? Who I'd take for a single play? Drive? Game? Season? Career? There can be lots of answers, and none of them are necessarily wrong or ridiculous.

That's kind of why I think the Eli/Peyton thing is at least a debate now...

    Career.

If we're talking career, with what we have to base a career off of, this is actually one of the EASIEST questions. It's Jerry Rice for WR's and it's really not close.

Start asking QB's, RB's or even other sports and it becomes much tougher.

I'm not going to have my own opinion on anything, I'm just gonna hate on others' opinions.

Would you change your opinion if Rice didn't have any Super Bowl wins and Moss had 2 or more? (with everything else remaining the same)

With the game on the line, give me Eli, no question.

I know a lot of people on here would suck the dick of Peyton Manning, but I always thought he was a bit overrated. Is he damn good? Yes. But to say he's the best of all time or even top 2 or 3 is foolish. He's won 1 super bowl and has had some pretty damn good teams.

Eli just led another Giants team to a super bowl that really wasn't all that great of a team.

Peyton Manning is the best quarterback in NFL history. It's not foolish at all.

9-10 in the Playoffs says no and yes to foolish.

Exactly. That is why using Super Bowl Championships to rate individual players as a better player than another is worthless.

It's not completely worthless to use Championships. If Jim Kelly wins all 4 of his Super Bowls vs losing all 4 he is going to seen in a completely different light.

No, it's not. Terry Bradshaw was a mediocre QB, at best, with 2 more TD's in his career than interceptions. He benefitted from a great defense, a strong running game and a few pretty good receivers. By the numbers, he's NOT a HOFer but has those 4 rings, so he's in. Same thing can be said about Joe Willie Namath...his stats sucked but he has a ring.

You cannot compare the era Bradshaw and Namath played in to today's standards. Defense's could basically do whatever they wanted to QB's and receivers, today you can hardly put a hand on either one. Namath and Bradshaw both deserve their spots in Canton. Bradshaw's Playoffs stats are outstanding and he has 2 Super Bowl MVP's and a League MVP. Namath first to throw for 4000+ yds in a 14 game season a record that stood for 14 years and it was broken in a 16 game season.

So, based on this reasoning, Jorge Posada should be a first ballot HOFer. 5 Rings!!!!

Let's forget that he is a career .275 hitter, 1583 hits, 261 HRs, 1021 RBIs, 1377 SO (almost as many strikeouts as hits), 6 time All Star.....but he has 5 World Seriees Championships!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, Posada was a good catcher, just not HOF calibre. You can't use a team accomplishment as criteria for an indivudual evaluation.

    Just not buying it.
