agreed. i still have no idea why the indians don't draw more - going to games is much more enjoyable than watching them on tv but its the complete opposite with the nfl. i hate the live-action experience of the nfl - feels like a process more than actual enjoyment. the bengals situation sucks but i'm not going to blame anyone for staying home instead of going to the game. it's just a much better experienceTerry_Tate;1027126 wrote:Also, Cleveland fans who root for the Indians and rip on Bengals fans are hypocrites IMO. I think so but that has nothing to do with my point. It seems there is an assumption that people have the responsibility to support through attendance a local franchise. I disagree with that. I'm a fan of all professional teams in Pittsburgh (yes, even the Pirates) and have been all my life. My first professional game was a Pirates game when I was 7. Willie Stargell hit an upper deck homer at 3-Rivers and he was my favorite player of all time (still is). One of my earliest memories is sitting in the back seat of our car, driving through the Fort Pitt tunnel and seeing the city appear before my eyes. It stuck with me.
If that makes me a redneck bandwagoner, then go fuck yourself.

That gets a bit dicey though also. Im an Indianapolis fan first and foremost. But I am a huge Red Wings fan and huge Tribe fan. Indy doesnt have those sports. Then I follow the Browns really close but nowhere near the Colts. Born in Ft. Wayne, raised in Toledo. Got all the Browns coverage every week, so it was just natural to follow them and hope they do well. Maybe they are selling in the wrong market. Maybe they longevity or lack thereof of their product is the issue as opposed to their league standings. You make it sound like if they win the people of Cincinnati have some obligation to give them money. It doesn't work that way. It's like saying the best film at the Sundance Festival this year should be the highest grossing in the box office. It won't necessarily be if people aren't entertained by it.

I'm not saying it isn't. For the most part, I would say fans go to the games because a. they want to see their team win and b. like to tailgate/hang out with friends/socialize/etc. the fact that they are winning and can clinch a playoff birth is something that knocks out both of those points in one. What does entertainment stand for when it comes to football? Maybe other sports entertainment dollars are winning out.
