Professional Sports Playoffs

no, im a soccer fan. how is the system set up different than say...the nba. 8 teams, 7 game series. Most of the reasons I see on here why the NHL playoffs are so great is because "they lay it all on the line, there are bigger hits, they play with emotion because they might not get another chance"...umm that happens in every sport.Laley23;975648 wrote:No not at all. Since when does BEST = MOST ENTERTAINING or MOST WATCHED??? Majority of people dont like hockey, so the ratings wont be there. Doesnt mean it isnt the best system. Jesus. Like, they arent even that closely related to mix up???
By your thought process, Soccer is BY FAR the best sport. No other sport can even compete. None at all. Im sure you dont feel tha way and venture to say, like most on here, soccer sucks. -

Its more intense. Just naturally more intense game than basketball when every play can be the winning play (1-0 game). Basketball is the same format (the best imo) but basketball doesnt get intense until the end of the. I also think the way hockey is played (4 lines, 3 in playoffs) makes the teams MUCH more even. Your stars may double shift in the playoffs, but the games are so toss-up each time. Not the case in the NBA where the top teams stars play the whole game, and so the 7-8 seeds almost always get the shit beat out of them. In the NBA, 7 game series arent rare, but certainly not as common as in the NHL. The NHL teams are so close, you always see series going to game 6 or 7 and you are always getting OT. The NBA and NHL system, imo, is the best. But the way the NHL is set up as a sport makes the games better to me.Pick6;975660 wrote:no, im a soccer fan. how is the system set up different than say...the nba. 8 teams, 7 game series. Yeah. How many people in other sports would pull out their own teeth on the bench just to make sure they didn't miss a shift? Would never happen in the NBA. You like to say the ratings aren't good enough. Explain to me why ever since the NHL lockout ratings for hockey keep getting better and better??Pick6;975660 wrote:no, im a soccer fan. how is the system set up different than say...the nba. 8 teams, 7 game series. These two games right here show why the NHL playoffs are so god damn exciting.

like_thatThis is still my top NHL playoff moment. Unbelievable Sami had conscious to know to find the bench.

Skyhook79Ronnie Lott once cut off part of his finger so he could play.
Hope this helps. -

I'd be willing to bet that the Stanley Cup has been won by several different teams/franchises.GoPens;974768 wrote:Easily hockey. Winning the Stanley Cup is the hardest championship to get out of all the major sports.
The Larry O'Brien trophy has been won by the Lakers or Celtics over half the time.
I do agree that the Stanley Cup playoffs are exciting, but I still hardly watch hockey. IMO, the NFL playoffs and NBA playoffs are both better.
There is emotion, intensity, etc, in every sports playoffs. So that's not really a valid argument. -
Hb31187Laying it on the line, big hits, putting everything on the line, playing injured....that all describes the NFL just as much as the NHL so idk why its being used to prove a point for the NHL. But if you dont bring it for one game, you go home

Lets not make fun of a concussion. Though I do think Crosby is a bit on the soft side. Cutler got criticized by NFL guys. No one is criticizing anyone for head injuries. Not really a good example.Pick6;975858 wrote:/Crosby'd -

Not making fun of concussions at all. Its an injury you should be very careful with.Laley23;975902 wrote:Lets not make fun of a concussion. Though I do think Crosby is a bit on the soft side. Just if you are "laying it all on the line", I'd figure the face of the NHL would maybe lie about his symptoms to his doctor and play for his team when they needed him in the playoffs. Happens all the time in the NFL, though the rules have gotten more strict recently, and rightfully so.
And for the record, I think Cutler is a giant pussy as well, which is why he will never win anything in the league. -

Not funny man. Concussion are no joke, coming from someone who has been dealing with one for the past 8+ months.Pick6;975858 wrote:/Crosby'd
As to your other post, he suffered 2 in a span of 4 days. That's why he has been out for so long. -

Y-Town SteelhoundNFL by far....Here's why NHL folks:
-EVERY game is a Game 7, the pressure is 1000x greater than the NHL.
-Played mostly outside, where most people play sports for the first time
-Largest, most intense crowd atmospheres
-Millions are watching increasing the aforementioned pressure
-You don't need to grow facial hair to know you're playing for a chance to be a champion -

#5 should also be applied to the fans of Hockey. Great list.Y-Town Steelhound;976356 wrote:NFL by far....Here's why NHL folks:

#1 is exactly why I dont think its the best. A series will result in the best team advancing a lot more often. That is a flaw in the NFL system. Not that I think they should change it or anything, but you arent going to always get the most deserving. It arguably makes it more exciting, but doesnt produce the top champion the way a series typically does in NHL or NBA.Y-Town Steelhound;976356 wrote:NFL by far....Here's why NHL folks:

Well if your goal is to "produce" the top champion...why invite 4 extra mediocre teams to the dance. I'll tell you what it is....extracting more money out of the pockets of fans.It arguably makes it more exciting, but doesnt produce the top champion the way a series typically does in NHL or NBA.
Baseball has it right in its current form...3 division CHAMPS and ONE (and only one) wild card...just because you need 4 teams. AND Laley...it's a 'series' to boot. -

I know. But baseball is flawed in the sense that 2 pitchers can win a WS for you.HitsRus;976443 wrote:Well if your goal is to "produce" the top champion...why invite 4 extra mediocre teams to the dance. I'll tell you what it is....extracting more money out of the pockets of fans.

I like them all, Im not really trying to say one sucks or anything. Just I think hockey consistently produces the best games each and every night and I think the 7 game series is the best way to get the best team to advance. -
Y-Town Steelhound
But see that's what you don't get. The NHL/NBA/MLB says "hey even though it's the playoffs and you should be playing your best by this point, we'll give you multiple opportunities to advance in case you suck." The NFL says "this is the playoffs, you get one chance to prove you're deserving of playing for a championship. win or go home."Laley23;976394 wrote:#1 is exactly why I dont think its the best. It raises the stakes much more. A hockey team can get behind early in the series because there are always more games. An NFL team knows it has to bring its best football in every playoff game. That's why I think it's harder to win the super bowl. The margin for error is much less.
