I honestly think we'll see a change in calendar for some leagues. I know some clubs in Germany favor the move.NilesPacMan;1399128 wrote:I think that the problem with moving it to the Winter is whether it will cause a permanent change in the structure of the season. Will a high-profile league such as the EPL take an eight-week hiatus in the middle of the season? Or, will they go to a March-November calendar as you said?
They would only move to a March-November calendar if the World Cup makes a permanent shift to the winter, I think. Doing just one season in that format would cause too many troubles. The problem is whether having a winter World Cup prevent the European countries from hosting? You said that they don't like the winter games, as is. Could you imagine a totally winter UK World Cup? The problem with the hiatus is that many clubs will be wary to have their players in an eight-week hiatus in the middle of season for injury concerns.
I would have no clue what they would do, just throwing out my thoughts.
The way that the Bundesliga is operating right now, for clubs to follow their lead isn't a bad option. A lot of positive things happening in Germany. Spain takes a break in the winter already. Numerous players and managers in England have suggested they take a break too. With all that commotion about it, why not?!
The worst part about it is the first year. The first year of moving the calendar probably is a bit different, but it'll come back around and players will get used to it.
If it doesn't happen, I'll be shocked. I don't see MLS changing the calendar. But, there will be some leagues shifting, somehow, in the next 5-10 years. -
NilesPacManYeah, I have no problem with it if it's a one year switch type of thing and then we're permanently on a new path
It's the whole switching back and forth I worry about if they don't make the WC in the winter permanently.
Also, I like the Spanish way of having a small break in the middle of the season. It's for what, 3-4 weeks? However, it's a time often spent without games going on. You put the World Cup in the middle of the season, and that's where things get tricky. The tournament itself takes only four weeks, but teams have to have at least a week of camp, and you're starting to push on 6 weeks.
Another thing that will have be considered is the movement of other major tournaments, such as Euro and Copa America
I think I prefer the MLS schedule with a winter WC logistically, but having games during the summer flows better with watching than winter. As I mentioned earlier, the Winter Olympics happen in the same year, so the two will have to set apart as there's no way the IOC would pit itself against the behemoth of the WC. If it's timed right, though, we could have the possibility of the sweetest weekend of sports history with an opening ceremony on a Friday followed by a Super Bowl Sunday doubleheader lined with the WC Final and the SB -

Hey, got one back and we have a game. Had it going for the first thirty minutes pretty well and then MASSIVE BRAINFART for 15 minutes to end the first half. Still plenty of time to get the equalizer now.Automatik;1399351 wrote:Let the beating commence. -
gorocks99I know it's just MLS, but what an entertaining game between Portland and New York last night. Great to watch.

What does "just MLS" mean?! I love MLS. Nothing like supporting the domestic league. They have me. Always will -- at least as long as the Crew stay in Columbus.gorocks99;1399665 wrote:I know it's just MLS, but what an entertaining game between Portland and New York last night. Great to watch.

What Soccer Don is doing with Chivas USA is beyond me. They are a joke. Lowest-ever season opener game attendance on Saturday night as they hosted the Crew. 7,100 fans and rumor has it half the tickets were given away! -

I love MLS too, but I know a lot of American soccer fans discount it because it's not EPL or La Liga.OSH;1399705 wrote:What does "just MLS" mean?! I love MLS. Nothing like supporting the domestic league. They have me. Always will -- at least as long as the Crew stay in Columbus.

I will say, I wish Chicago had a more accessible stadium as I'd go to some of their games. With it being in the middle of nowhere it kind of sucks. -

solid debut for Porter. Just needs to get his defense shored up.gorocks99;1399665 wrote:I know it's just MLS, but what an entertaining game between Portland and New York last night. Great to watch.

This is a common complaint for several stadiums. FC Dallas' accessibility is terrible too. I am not THAT fond of Columbus', but it's better than others. Chicago's, as you know is awful. Those are the top 3 complaints.gorocks99;1399715 wrote:I love MLS too, but I know a lot of American soccer fans discount it because it's not EPL or La Liga.

Before Vancouver's was finished, their's had terrible accessibility. Butt, now it's much better. -
OSHI hate when Champions League days are on...I get up soooooo early and have to wait all day to watch my Red Devils!
GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED!!! -
gorocks99Can't believe Nani got the red card. The finish to this game is going to be insane.

gorocks99And there we go, tied. Man U is fucked.

gorocks99Incredible goal and it's 2-1 Real.

AutomatikWow, been following the Gamecast. What change of events.
Nani went in studs up, correct? I hear people are complaining. Studs up is a red, it's not a judgement call. -

announcers thought it should have been a yellow. Madrid defender came out of nowhere; I dont think it was worthy of a red.Automatik;1400571 wrote:Wow, been following the Gamecast. What change of events.

It was in no way a red card. Terrible terrible call. -
AutomatikSounds similar to the Kompany straight red last year against United.
He was sent off very early, studs up, no where near the ball. Straight red. -
Pick6
For Nani it was only one stud and he didnt even slide. Just standing and kicked (leg about waist height) and the Madrid defender came from behind him and he kicked him. Wasnt worthy of a red, from my limited soccer knowledge.Automatik;1400574 wrote:Sounds similar to the Kompany straight red last year against United.

No way was it "studs up" or anywhere close to being a red. I know, I know, I'm a United fan so I'll say that right?Automatik;1400571 wrote:Wow, been following the Gamecast. What change of events.

Nani was looking at the ball the whole time, and Real Madrid player came from behind and ran into Nani's outstretched boot. It was waist high, in the ribs, but Nani was trying to receive the ball with the inside of his foot, jumping, and moving toward the ball.

This incident was nowhere close to Nigel de Jong's challenge in the World Cup. NO WHERE close. And that challenge got a yellow.

AutomatikDefinitely worthy of a yellow, red is too hard, but I understand the ref's thinking.

AutomatikYou know the foul I'm talking about last year with Kompany. My United supporting coworkers were all about...
Studs up! Studs up! Intent doesn't matter!
Now I know the plays weren't the same , but the end result of an unnecessary red was. Just saying, that unfortunately bad calls happen and today United were on the wrong end.
