Reds @ Brewers...Game 1

    Arroyo vs Narveson

Arroyo has been rough his last 2 starts and another bad outing will worry me some.

Narveson has been pretty good this year but Votto is 4/7 off of him.....so he likely won't see too much. Dusty needs to find an answer in the spot behind Votto......be that the #3 spot or the #4.

Reds need someone besides Phillips and Votto to try wild and crazy stunts like getting base hits. Last night was kinda unreal. Those two combined for three doubles and two walks (one intentional, one intentional in all but name). The rest of the team got what? One single and a couple walks? I know Gomes drew a walk and Cairo got a single, but don't remember anything else.

Didn't you hear, Jake Westbrook is starting his Cy Young campaign.

It's these times where I really can't stand Dusty and Jacoby.....they seem to be the worst at getting players to do what they need to do to shorten their slumps. I know you have to blame the players....but coaches can help.

I'd switch Phillips and Votto for now. Phillips will prosper hitting in front of Votto especially with his current chip and his approach he's had most of the year......but Votto is not going to get pitched to without someone hitting a little behind him. Bat Votto 2nd and Phillips 3rd if Cairo isn't hitting good enough to bat 2nd or Gomes and Bruce are struggling. But the key to batting Phillips after Votto would be for Phillips to understand not to change anything.....if he can keep doing exactly what he is doing then it could be a quick fix.

This is going to come off as somewhat crazy, but I'm gonna say it anyway. How about Bruce in the 2-hole, and move Phillips to the 4-hole? Bruce will get better pitches, and possibly be able to break out of his slump.

    Not against it.

Bruce has to swing at good pitches and hit them where they are pitched no matter where he bats.....he's going to gewt better pitches in front of Votto....but if he tries to pull the outside fastball and curves....he's still goign to struggle. Cairo hits it where it's pitched more often than not and Phillips is capable of doing Votto justice behind him.

I'm liking the look of this lineup. Reds win 8-6

I hate Phillips at the 4. But it had to be done. And if Bruce can't hit getting the pitches he will see ahead of votto. Then he just needs to sit for a while. If Phillips can just focus on not changing things at the plate just because he's in the 4 hole, he'll be just fine there.

I think we will see the same mindset from BP for his first(maybe first 2) at bats. After that he will be swinging for the fences on anything CLOSE to the plate.

I was thinking Bruce in the #2 spot also. I think this has a chance to work well. But like I92 says, BP has to keep the same approach, and that Bruce needs to lay off the bad pitches in the #2 spot just like anywhere else in the order. As far as two lefties in a row, Votto is good with lefthanders, and Bruce is better than he was - seems like he lays off a lot better with a lefty like he should against righties too - witness the RBI walk to tie the game Sat that the Cards gave to the Reds to let them avoid a hurtful sweep.

    Typical bandwagon excuse.

Brewers spray chart defense worked well that first inning!

Nice to hear George up in the booth again.

Reds go down 1-2-3 in the top half.

Brew Crew send 5 to the plate and it's 3 games in a row without a run allowed in the first inning for Reds pitchers.
  • wildcats20
And BP with a ground rule double to DEEP left center.
  • mhs95_06
Gomes with an un-intelligent AB that results in an unproductive out!
