NonSteelers 2011 draft class
1st - Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State
2nd - Marcus Gilbert, T, Florida
3rd - Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
4th - Cortez Allen, CB, The Citadel
5th - Chris Carter, OLB, Fresno State
6th - Keith Williams, G, Nebraska
7th - Baron Batch, RB, Texas Tech -
NonMy initial grades
1st - Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State A-
...Impressive dude. Should be a good fit as a 3-4 defensive end and could be a Steelers defensive leader for many years.
2nd - Marcus Gilbert, T, Florida B+
...I like the versatility and athleticism and the fact that he could be a future left tackle.
3rd - Curtis Brown, CB, Texas B
...Projects as a good cover corner but maybe only as the No. 3 or nickel corner.
4th - Cortez Allen, CB, The Citadel B
...A raw project but some good size and upside. Steelers believe with NFL coaching and development he could be a future starter. Will he be more like Ike Taylor or Ricardo Colclough?
5th - Chris Carter, OLB, Fresno State B+
...He needs to learn how to drop into coverage to be more than a situational rusher but he is a very strong rusher. He has good speed off the edge and gets low and under the tackles to get to the quarterback. Has moments where he's an animal.
6th - Keith Williams, G, Nebraska C
...Considered a battler. Very aggressive in the run game. Needs to work on pass protection. I didn't think they had to go OL again here. They have Legursky and Foster at RG. Colon can possibly move there if he re-signs. Gilbert also has the versatility to possibly play guard.
7th - Baron Batch, RB, Texas Tech B
...Utility back. Has good hands and good strength for 210 lbs. With Mewelde Moore a free agent, this made sense.
Overall grade - B -
NonI remember watching Batch at Texas Tech and obviously he caught a lot of passes in that offense but he also seemed to bounce off and shake a lot of tackles in the open field for not being that big.
And good acceleration.
That looks like a nice diamond in the rough. -
like_thatMore lost steelers fans posting in the Browns thread. Just trying to help you guys out and get the posts to the right spot:
Non;755850 wrote:There are so many web sites that the Browns fans on here look at every offseason and you post stuff about how the Browns are a team on the rise and they're doing so much right.
BR has posted this stuff for about five years straight.
Then comes the season and the Steelers kick butt again and the Browns stink and have to rebuild and change the coach and start over.
I'm sorry but this is true. And you know it.Non;755903 wrote:I would think any site would reveal that the Steelers are the greatest! haha
They've had stretches where they've been among the best at scouting and drafting.
I would say presently they are not remarkable at drafting. Green Bay, New England and Baltimore are all better than the Steelers at drafting, but the Steelers are solid. The Steelers have made up for it some with finding undrafted free agents and probably most importantly their coaching and development. They have experienced coaches, especially on defense like LeBeau, linebackers coach Keith Butler, defensive line coach John Mitchell, who have all been there for many years.Non;755913 wrote:I could remember being on the old site and the Browns fans were posting stuff about this time of year how they had the best breakout star (Braylon Edwards) and were the team on the rise, Savage had the blueprint to success....LOL
Then last year after a few decent weeks against New England, New Orleans and the Jets, the Browns were turning it around...LOL
The season ended with what should've been a 100-3 loss to the Steelers if the Steelers would've played the whole game.Art Modell;756011 wrote:Excellent post. The Browns fans get all excited about the draft because well, they dont have anything else to be excited about. The truth is that Cleveland will win 5 or 6 games and the Steelers will be making another Super Bowl run. -
killer_ewokThanks, like_that. We'll try to keep any remarks about Cleveland on the Pittsburgh threads since it's not what you say, but where you say it that's important (as some Browns fans continue their "Shitsburgh" and "rapist" comments on their threads but have a shit fit when remarks are made by Steeler fans about the Browns).

lol, why the hell would I care if you guys had condescending remarks about Cleveland teams on your own thread? Thats expected. There is a big difference between that, and thread shitting the whole time. Don't worry I am sure capone and non will continue to get lost in the Cleveland threads. I will be sure your lost and found is returned to the proper owner. -
AutomatikCleveland fans are ultra sensitive these days...be warned.
Overall I like Pittsburgh's class, although I don't know anything about their last 2 picks.
Whats the chances that Curtis Brown or Cortez Allen can contribute immediately? I also really like the Marcus Gilbert pick...he is one massive dude. -
killer_ewokWith our secondary? I'd say both could see time pretty soon. I like the Gilbert pick too. He can play a few different positions on the line and that will be extremely valuable if that unit gets hit with the injury bug like it did last season.

Yeah I hope he pans out. Pending on if he does well when he arrives, I'd like to see him slowly introduced into the lineup like Pouncey before he started. You know with our line he'll definitely be seeing the field. -
killer_ewokMendenhall said some dumb shit regarding Bin Laden's death. Hopefully Lamarr Woodley smacks him around a bit in practice. LOL
-
AutomatikI was actually surprised to hear something like that from Mendenhall. He always came across as rather intelligent.

Kinda artsy fartsy IMO. I think he is a knowledgeable guy but he's got that "activist" side to him....like a more quiet version of Jim Brown except Rashard isn't the militant racist rapist that #32 was.
Just a stupid fucking comment by Mendenhall. Even if you feel that way....have the common sense to not broadcast it on Twitter. -

Hoep he doesn't turn into the cry baby that #32 did. Another difference between the two is that one is the greatest football player to ever live and the other is arguably in the top 20 at his position. Nice work on mendenhall being in the same idiot category as Sean Penn though. -

I think Brown is one of the greatest football players to ever live, but not the best. I don't think he's even the best ever at his position. You could certainly make an argument for him though. Just my opinion and probably a discussion for a different day/topic. -

I dont want to hijack your thread and turn this into a "best rb ever" discussion, but who do you think is better than Brown at the RB position? -

Barry Sanders...again, that's my opinion and probably a debate better suited for a different thread. -
NonAs much of a bonehead as Mendenhall is, I'm really impressed with this Baron Batch.
We'll see but I'm thinking he might be a big steal.
Sounds like a quality individual and his skill set is impressive. -
SpeedofsandMaurkice playing golf for his 2nd time ever yesterday in Tebow's charity tourney at Sawgrass. "Maurkice Pouncey delivered a highlight on the 16th hole when he swung so hard the head of his rented driver came off."
I had an awesome day, it was really casual and we were able to talk with all the players, they had fun too.

killer_ewokIn other AFC North news....
Cleveland Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur said that the Browns pulled off "probably one of the greatest trades in draft history." He also referred to it as "historic."
Geez, might wanna coach one practice first, coach. At best, he's right and gets a few pats on the back. Worst case scenario, this is used as ammunition if the Browns don't make out in the trade. We won't be able to evaluate it for a few years but it's hard to imagine it ending up as "great" as he makes it out to be.

Heckert so far as a great track record. I hope he can continue his decent drafting from Philly to last season with this year's class. If he does the Browns should benefit from the trade. -
killer_ewokSome info coming out that the Steelers had a deal in place with the Redskins to trade up in the 1st round of this year's draft.....but Pouncey was selected one spot earlier.

Just about to post that, Mort pretty much confirmed it.
Chris Mortensen
As Dan Snyder revealed to Sirius Radio, Redskins almost dealt 16th pick to Steelers, but no doubt it fell thru when 'Fins took Pouncey @ 15. -
killer_ewokIke Taylor was just on Jim Rome Is Burning. Rome asked him if he'd give the Steelers a hometown discount or if he wanted to get fair market value for his services and Ike said he wanted the FMV.
Here's to hoping the FMV isn't out of the Steelers' price range.....
It shouldn't be but I'm hoping some idiot team doesn't overpay and get him because even though he's not great.....he's important to our defense.
