Pittsburgh Steelers 2011 offseason and draft thread

Yeah you're right about that. He won't stick around if he's not up to his normal level.

Also he is grounded in terms of not wanting to be messed up after football.

I'd say 34 is probably as far as he'll go.

If I were him I'd have the same approach. He'll be a HoFer with SB rings and a DPOY award. Not sure why he'd stick around to not walk when he's 45.

I like the Steelers offseason even without signing any big external free agents.

They've done a good job bringing back key guys and adding depth through the draft and the undrafted free agents.

There's going to be some good competitions and tough evaluations in a short period of time.

Whats a key position battle to watch?

A big question mark right now is at wide receiver.

Emmanuel Sanders is banged up and Ward is not practicing.

That leaves basically Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown.

They'll give Limas Sweed and Tyler Grisham their shot but could possibly pick up another WR.

The biggest are at RB and CB in my opinion.

Not so much the first couple spots which will go to Mendenhall and Redman but after that you have Mewelde Moore and some younger players like Baron Batch, Jonathan Dwyer and possibly John Clay battling for roster spots.

At CB, they have Ike Taylor and then veterans Bryant McFadden and William Gay who are both ok but they could use an upgrade at that No. 2 spot. Keenan Lewis, Crezdon Butler, Curtis Brown, and Cortez Allen are young, unproven players but they're looking for somebody to emerge from that group.

    some other smaller battles

    No. 3 QB...Batch or Dixon

tight end...veteran John Gilmore or undrafted free agent Weslye Saunders...Miller and H-back David Johnson will be the other two, they lost Matt Spaeth

starting right guard...Doug Legursky or Ramon Foster

backup inside linebacker...Stevenson Sylvester had a strong rookie season on special teams and might join the defensive rotation this year. Breakout candidate. Larry Foote figures to be the first backup inside at this point.

I asked for a key battle not the 3rd string QB. Ben isn't missing games this season so I dont think 3rd qb matters. Also they'd be stupid to keep Batch over Dixon.

Reports were that Dwyer was out of shape when camp started. They said he couldn't keep up with his group at all during the run. Bad cardiovascular condition. It's not like he can afford to pull that sort of thing as he's not guaranteed a roster spot. Also, word was that Pouncey looked to be in fantastic shape. Less body fat and was running like a thoroughbred during the run.

Yea, they are very disappointed in Dwyer. Baron Batch has been playing well.

Ed Bouchette said Keith Williams has been a hit so far.

Guard out of Nebraska. Mean and nasty.

He also mentioned Eric Greenwood as an undrafted player who has looked good.

6'6 receiver out of Idaho. White.

I don't see Dwyer making it. His dedication and work ethic were questioned before then he shows up to camp fat. Cut him loose.

What the word on John Clay?

Bad news about Baron Batch. He tore his ACL and is likely gone for the season.

It will give John Clay more of an opportunity during the preseason but Batch was having a strong camp.

    Decent.

didn't see that one coming. Spell the end for Sweed?

    Cotchery nice pickup.

Saw that about Batch yesterday and heard the ACL tear confirmation on the radio this morning. That sucks. I had heard good things about him in camp too.

I like the Cotchery signing. He's solid, consistent, reliable.

Yeah, he 's gone. He'll be auditioning for another team.

Eric Greenwood (6'6 from Idaho) and Wes Lyons (6'8 from West Virginia) might be worth keeping an eye on during the preseason. A couple big receivers that could make the practice squad.

I think he's been a dead man walking for a couple years. About time someone put him out of his misery.

I like the Cotchery signing. Thought he was a good player for the Jets who just got taken out of the picture by them going after big name guys. Not a super star, but a guy who will contribute.

I like the Cotchery signing as well. Younger and faster than Ward and a better possession receiver than Wallace. Could be a solid contributor.

    Better than Ward?

    Tidbits:

-John Clay tried to quit today as he walked off the field and had to be convinced by a staffer to return to practice.

-Still uncertain whether the broken thumb that Ike Taylor will have surgery on will keep him out of the opener vs. the Ravens.

-Cotchery has looked good since arriving at Steelers camp.

-Antonio Brown is lighting it up in practice and making big plays.

-I read that Sweed made a couple of really nice catches yesterday but I'm guessing that it's too little too late for Limas.

    Tried to quit? wtf?
