I'd also go with Peterson, then DL (Dareus, most likely). I don't think I'd pick Green, simply because taking wide receivers that high in the draft has left a distinctly bad taste in my mouth.

Peterson's definitely growing on me. Right now he'd be my top choice with Von Miller being second, Dareus third.

Its sounds like Peterson is really starting to climb some draft boards. Some guy on NFL network suggested that he might be the first player taken and that he is the safest pick out there. I know CB might not be a position of need, at least not like DL but I dont pass on this kid if hes there

Yea, I've not seen him projected in the 1st round at all, I don't believe. Haven't checked the mocks for awhile though.

Basically we see that some have Buffalo projected to take a QB. If not, the Browns take who is left over from the pretty much consensus list all of which is a position of need:

    Bowers
    Peterson
    Miller
    Dareus
    Fairly
    Green

    Agreed!

Shaun Rogers signs a 1 year deal with the Saints. It will be interesting to see if he finally gets motivated now that he's landed with a good team.

8 am - Panthers - Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
10 am - Broncos - Daquan Bowers, DE, Clemson
12 pm - Bills - Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
2 pm - Bengals -AJ Green, WR, Georgia
4 pm - Cardinals - Patrick Peterson, DB, Louisiana State University

So this is how the first 5 picks went in the mock draft. I am going to take Miller...
  • Commander of Awesome
I'm not as high on Miller as some in here. His lack of ability play in pass coverage is worrisome to me. Plus I still remember Chaun Thompson, the last LBer we got from Texas A&M (granted it was west texas a&m).

Huge difference though. Miller is the best pure pass rusher in this draft. His selection would have been a no brainer if the Browns were still in a 3-4. Not sure how they would utilize his strength (pass rushing) in the 4-3. Miller, in the top 10, wouldn't be a reach. Chaun Thompson was taken about 3 rounds too soon by Botch.

fucking botch davis. He really fucked our team. I still prefer Dline, then DB then WR for the draft.

Did you read that article with Steelers O-Coordinator (former Browns coordinator) Bruce Arians before the Super Bowl? Arians hates his (Davis) guts and blames the Browns meltdown loss to the Steelers in 2003 on Davis. Davis' firing of Foge Fazio at halftime of that game, subsequently taking over the defense, and calling off the dogs/going into a prevent allowed Tommy Maddox to pick apart a Browns defense that had been very staunch in the first half.
  • Commander of Awesome
Yeah I read that article. Botch was notorious for the prevent from fucking winning Efense (get it? no d lolz). I agree with Arians, I hate his fucking guts too, what a god damn moron. I still can't decide which game hurt the most in terms of browns losses the playoff loss to shittsburgh, the loss to the Raiders on the rekick for the false start back in '07 (I believe Dunn jumped off sides) or the Bengals loss to seal the deal for no playoffs in 2007 when RAC attack refused to bench Dumbass and his 4 ints.

Derek Anderson sucked but I still blame Chudzinski for throwing the ball 40+ times in 40 mph winds, instead of running Jamal Lewis, as much as Anderson. Granted a few of those picks (dump off pass across the middle with nobody there but a defender) were on DA but with the way they were playing Chud should have had him take a knee before the half.

Call me crazy, but I'd love to see the Browns sign Vernon Gholston, have him bulk up, and see what he can do in his natural position at DE. Remember, we're talking about a guy who earned 2 sacks against Jake Long (if I recall, those were the only 2, or 2 of 3 that Long gave up all year).

He can probably be had for pretty cheap and the Browns should corral all of the D-linemen they can IMO to breed competition and not complacency (not that it's a concern of mine).

The Book of Matthews isn't closed for Browns
Browns pass on Clay III in 2009, can draft younger son of former star Clay

    By Marla Ridenour
    Beacon Journal sports columnist

Published on Wednesday, Mar 02, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS: Frequently when he's recognized, Casey Matthews finds himself talking to a fan who hopes the Browns won't be fooled again.

In the 2009 draft, the Browns traded down three times in the first round, passing on Matthews' brother, Clay III, at every stop. It seemed to make no difference that Matthews' father, Clay Jr., had played linebacker for the Browns for 16 of his 19 seasons in the NFL.

Browns coach Eric Mangini selected California center Alex Mack at No. 21, and Southern Cal's Matthews went 26th to the Green Bay Packers. Now he's one of the most dynamic pass rushers in the game, a two-time Pro Bowler who finished second in the 2010 Associated Press
defensive player of the year voting for the newly crowned Super Bowl champions.

The Browns will get another chance to right that wrong on April 29-30. Oregon inside linebacker Casey Matthews is projected as a fourth- or fifth-round selection and could be considered by the Browns as they make the conversion to a 4-3 defense.

Casey would love to join his father's former team.

''I hope. If they want me, I'll go,'' Matthews said Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. ''I've heard that. A lot of people will come up to me and say, 'We missed on your brother; hopefully we'll get you.' ''

Matthews lives in Southern California, but he has found that Browns fans are everywhere.

''Wherever I go, it just seems that people who are familiar with who I am, who Clay is, and my dad playing there, they'll bring it up,'' Casey said.

The Matthews family is one of only two families to have three generations play in the NFL. Clay Sr. was a defensive end for four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers in the 1950s. They join the Pynes (George Jr., George III and Jim, an offensive lineman for the expansion Browns).

Browns General Manager Tom Heckert won't overlook Casey Matthews' background.

''Obviously he comes from pretty good bloodlines,'' Heckert said Saturday. ''He's a tough kid; he can run. To say he's anywhere like his brother, probably not the greatest thing to say right now, to put that pressure on him. But he's got a chance to be a good football player.''

Casey is not the only player in this draft with NFL roots. Ohio State defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is the son of the late fullback Craig ''Ironhead'' Heyward, and Alabama running back Mark Ingram Jr. is the son of former wide receiver Mark Ingram Sr. Heckert worked for the Miami Dolphins when the elder Ingram played there, and Browns coach Pat Shurmur was a teammate of Ingram's at Michigan State. LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson is a cousin of NFL cornerback Bryant McFadden and related to receivers Santana and Sinorice Moss.

Asked the importance of bloodlines, Heckert said: ''It's not a negative if you don't have it. But it's a very positive thing if you came from a football family. Not only if your father played, but if your father was a coach, if you've been around the game your whole life.''

Casey Matthews had hoped to attend Southern Cal like his father and brother, but the Trojans didn't recruit him. So he picked the closest school and enjoyed playing against Clay III twice and at home in Los Angeles once a year.

He seems to have coped well with the pressure of being a Matthews.

''I put a lot of pressure on myself, just seeing the success my dad had, my brother is having,'' Casey said. ''Friends will ask me, 'Do you feel pressure?' I don't really see it as that. It's not necessarily that I have to live up to the name, though it would be nice playing at their level.''

Oregon's co-most outstanding player and leading tackler last season, Casey helped Oregon reach the BCS championship against Auburn. In the title game, his strip of quarterback Cam Newton set up a touchdown that tied the score 19-19 before Auburn prevailed, 22-19.

Casey, 6-foot-1 and 232 pounds, knows he's not as fast as Clay III. But he thinks he might have one advantage over his brother.

''My instincts,'' Casey said. ''He's more of an explosive athlete. We're different positions. I think my position requires a little more of the instinctual side and getting to the ball quicker. I feel that's a part of my game that Clay doesn't necessarily [do] as well.''

He also sports the same long hair as his brother, which earned Clay III an endorsement with Suave shampoo.

Asked if the flowing locks give them more power, Casey said: ''I like to think so, but no. It's just the look of it coming out the back of the helmet. It's one of our trademarks.''

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock likes Casey and thought he helped his draft stock ''immensely'' during Senior Bowl week. But Mayock knows the team that selects the next Matthews will be going off more than just his combine and pro day workouts.

''He won't test like his brother; he's not explosive like his brother,'' Mayock said Sunday. ''He's an inside player instead of an outside player. But I believe there's something about bloodlines. He's always around the football. He makes plays, he's smart, he's instinctive, and he will play better than his measurables would suggest.''

As for Super Bowl week, Casey said watching the Packers defeat the Steelers was a ''special moment'' for the Matthews family.

''It felt like I was a part of the team, too,'' Casey said. ''All the emotions [Clay III] was feeling, I was feeling as well. Same with the whole family. My dad played 19 years and didn't get to the Super Bowl. My brother is in two and wins it.

''My dad was very happy. I guess the Matthews' curse of not winning the Super Bowl is lifted.''

That might make longtime Browns backers happy, too. But they still long for another Matthews to help Cleveland get over its Super Bowl hump.

    2011 NFL Mock Draft, Version 8.0 (Post-Combine) 2nd March, 2011 - 12:49 pm Jeff Risdon/RealGM -

    1. Carolina Panthers: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama.

The decision to franchise Ryan Kalil instead of Charles Johnson leaves them more open to a DE, but the Panthers only have one DT on the roster right now. Nick Fairley might have a slightly higher ceiling, but the much bigger, more grounded Dareus has a much higher floor. That is important to GM Marty Hurney, as much as the chance to get an impact interior player the team hasn’t had for a long time, if ever.

    2. Denver Broncos: Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson.

It’s either Bowers or Patrick Peterson, and your guess is probably as good as mine right now. Ignore the QB talk, it’s all smoke and no fire. Coach John Fox coaxed greatness (most of the time) from Julius Peppers, the player Bowers most readily compares with, and Denver needs impact players all over the defense even with Dumervil returning.

    3. Buffalo Bills: Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M.

He projects better as a 3-4 OLB, but he’s fluid enough to play the hybrid spot in George Edward’s defense the way Jason Taylor did in Miami. He and the underappreciated Arthur Moats could be a strong OLB combo for a long time. I’m told they would take Bowers ahead of anyone else.

    4. Cincinnati Bengals: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama.

The Combine’s big winner, and the Bengals are a team noted for being suckers for great workouts. Jones is more physical than A.J. Green (or just about anyone this side of Anquan Boldin), and his two TDs against Patrick Peterson last season give him the standout moment that validates the workouts. Now on the matter of who will be throwing the ball to Jones…?

    5. Arizona Cardinals: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri.

Of all the picks in the top-10, this is the one I have the most confidence. By many accounts, Gabbert aced the grease-boards in interviews. Some point to his lack of experience, but he has double the starts of Mark Sanchez and the same amount as Sam Bradford, without the injury history. The Cardinals have to go QB and not risk being left out of the free agent/trade market.

    6. Cleveland Browns: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn.

I’ve had AJ Green slotted here for several editions, and he’s still a distinct possibility. But too many signs are pointing defense, and Fairley is the kind of impact performer the Browns sorely lack on that side of the ball. His ability to play all over the line is a real positive.

I find it real hard to believe from everything that I have seen and read that Peterson falls out of the top 6.
  • SportsAndLady
I'm thinking we have less than a 5% chance of getting Peterson
