Who cares? Golf is viewed as a sport... John Daly isn't exactly an Athlete, neither are the other 75% that make up the PGA. -

But the 400 pound lineman can be? Thats a pretty retarded analogy. -

lol very dumb statement, those linemen are amazingly athletic for how big they are then throw on top of that they have to block 270-300 pound DE's who can run 4.5-4.6's -
GoChiefsTheres nothing dumb about it. You cant have it both ways. Ur saying a driver cant be athletic bc hes over weight...yet a football player can be? Its either one or the other.
-
DeyDurkie5driving a car isn't athletic, plain and simple...also, to say an NFL linemen isn't athletic is dumb as shit

You're entitled to your opinion, and I didn't say I thought they were not athletic, but under his analogy, they aren't.
What's plain and simple is the fact that you have no clue (theres a shocker) what it takes to drive a 3500 pound race car, 200 mph, at 3 g's. Fact is, if you think thats easy to do, you're a retard. -

I don't think it's easy at all, in fact I know it's hard as shit...why can't nascar fans just accept the fact their hobby doesn't take athletic ability, you just have to be poor and dumb to be good at it(and before coyotes and chiefs blow a nut, it's a south park reference) -

Why would Chiefs blow a nut about it? I know you're not able to, but I don't mind openly debating things. Which is all I've been doing in case you haven't noticed. I really could care less what anyone else's opinion is about NASCAR.
Why can't people that know nothing about auto racing admit that they know nothing about it, so they don't have a clue as to whether or not the sport takes athletic ability? -

you have driven a nascar vehicle against other people, at those speeds and on those tracks? -
GoChiefsDeyDurkie5;575538 wrote:you have driven a nascar vehicle against other people, at those speeds and on those tracks?
As a matter of fact, I have. Except for the 200 mph part. 160 was enough for me. -
DeyDurkie5GoChiefs;575574 wrote:As a matter of fact, I have. Except for the 200 mph part. 160 was enough for me.
against other people at speeds just like the nascar races? no you haven't, so you in fact don't know shit about what it takes to drive them either. -

What part of, as a matter of fact, I have, do you not understand? -

160 isn't 200.... -

Charlotte Motor Speedway...160 mph...Avg speed of the last NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway? 144 mph.

did you win? -
GoChiefsDeyDurkie5;575613 wrote:did you win?
Nope. Sure didn't. And might I add before you go there, no, I'm not saying I turned 160 mph laps every lap, I'm sure as hell not better than a NASCAR driver, obviously. My average speed for the 50 laps was just under 122 mph, and there were only 10 other cars on the track, not 42. -
WebFireWow this thread got stupid in a hurry.

Fly4FunI'll chime in on the side that race car driving isn't a sport. It's an activity, much like pool, bowling, poker, golf, chess, etc. They are all competitive games that take skill but not necessarily athletic prowess to be successful at. I know I'll definitely ruffle feathers with my golf comment as that is more debatable. I still just have that image of guys on a gulf course with cigars... and yes, someone from a tour event almost winning (I believe he ended up just a tad short) winning a course while smoking a cigar excludes it from being an athletic event.
But one of the things I personally think is necessary for something to be considered a sport is the element of "hustle." Basically if the concept of strenuously exerting yourself to get just that much better isn't present then it can't be a sport. To me this is isn't the only factor, but one of many.
I have gone into this topic a few times before more extensively on the other board; but that is enough said for now. -

So, what you are saying, is that you have never watched a NASCAR race? Watch any race, and look at the drivers when they get out of the car. They are flushed, physically strained, on the brink of being dehydrated, sweating,,,,,,, sounds like "strenuously exerting onesself" to me.
Plus, watch the Pit Crews, those guys have to be in top shape, to run around a car and change tires and put fuel in a car in just 13 seconds. And damn near every race, some crew guy is putting himself in harms way, with cars driving around him. And there is always a guy getting hit by a car. Last week, one crew guy went to the hospital, after getting hit by a car.
In fact, under your theory, Baseball is almost not a sport. Stand there and try to hit a ball, how "strenuous" is that? Or field a ball and throw it to first. -

omg one injury in that entire race??? and they are sweating because it's hot in the car, not from physical exertion -
ptown_trojans_1Racing, in some terms is a sport. But, NASCAR is not the right example. I'd say F-1 or Indy cars are more of an example of how racing is a sport. Given the G-Loads on the body, plus the rate of acceleration and deceleration, it is a better example of the fitness and athleticism involved. It takes lightening reflexes, plus great athletics to move a car around a 15 curve course with upwards of 5 G turns and between 120-180 MPH.
