ECF: Magic @ Celtics - Game 3

Where? Look I'm a Cavs fan as well but I don't get the hate. It was a fair play, a fair series and a fair game. The better team won, tonight and likely this series, as well as the past series.

Regardless, it's that kind of hustle and want to that is allowing the C's to dominate
    No hate.

If I'm hating on anything, it's the officials for missing an obvious call.

    I'm not a Cavs fan.

If you don't think that was a travel, you are fucking retarded.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
Guilty! If you can't pick up a ball from the floor without turning it over to the other team, what is the point of picking up the ball off of the floor?

And this is the second time I'll mention this, this is the only place where I've seen anyone claim it was a travel. Not from the real-time broadcast. Not from the half-time show. Not from the post-game show. Not from the post-post game show. Not from anywhere else.

You can pick the ball up off of the court dude, but you cannot get up with the ball when you've fallen down. If you do, it is a travel, which is what Rondo was not called for.
  • wildcats20
And none of the announcers are going to say anything because it takes away from Rondo's hustle on the play.

You're not getting it! Travels are allowed these days.

They should just remove the rule if they are not going to enforce it.

NBA is not basketball anymore(it's a weak variation of it), hasn't been for many years.

That predictable outcome was worth the 3 off days.

This is why the LeBron talk is so prevalent, it's about impossible to keep interested with the NBA playoffs between the schedule and the non-competitive series.

And that rule is where here (note it isn't)?:

    Section XIV-Traveling
    a. A player who receives the ball while standing still may pivot, using either foot as the pivot foot.
    b. A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may use a two-count rhythm in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball.
    The first count occurs:
    (1) As he receives the ball, if either foot is touching the floor at the time he receives it.
    (2) As the foot touches the floor, or as both feet touch the floor simultane- ously after he receives the ball, if both feet are off the floor when he receives it.
    The second occurs:
    (1) After the count of one when either foot touches the floor, or both feet touch the floor simultaneously.
    c. A player who comes to a stop on the count of one may pivot, using either foot as the pivot foot.
    d. A player who comes to a stop on the count of two, with one foot in advance of the other, may pivot using only the rear foot as the pivot foot.
    e. A player who comes to a stop on the count of two, with neither foot in advance of the other, may use either foot as the pivot foot.
    f. In starting a dribble after (1) receiving the ball while standing still, or (2) coming to a legal stop, the ball must be out of the player's hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor.
    g. If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball.
    h. A player who falls to the floor while holding the ball, or while coming to a stop, may not gain an advantage by sliding.
    i. A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player.
PENALTY: Loss of ball. The ball is awarded to the opposing team at the sideline, nearest spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.

There is nothing here about getting up from the ground, the vast majority of the rule has to do with establishing a pivot, probably the closest rule is (f) with (h). He didn't have possession of the ball prior to his fall. Pursuant to (h), he didn't gain an advantage by sliding....thus by the time he had possession he had established a "legal stop", and pursuant to (f) all he needed to do was start dribbling before he lifted the pivot he established.

Granted, the supermajority of the time someone is on the floor with the ball it is a travel, mainly because the player gains an advantage while being on the floor. But there is nothing in the rule book that says you can't get up from the floor. Such a rule doesn't even make sense. Hypothetically, a person chasing after a ball on the ground could keep tapping it without establishing possession and get up with it, but they couldn't just grab it and get up with it?

The NCAA rules are similar, but arguably tighter, it is more clear that you have to start your dribble before your pivot is established.

I would take it all the way to Supreme Court if these posters don't see it your way Manhattan Buckeye. That non- travel call in a 20 pt blowout is unacceptable..

Sad but true. This the worst set of playoffs I can ever remember.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
It isn't "my way", its the rule, I just posted the rule. What the hell does the Supreme Court have to do with anything? LOL how would they judge a rule that doesn't exist?

Forget about the fact that it was the arguably the biggest play of the playoffs, I'm confused how myths of rules perpetuate. Traveling is 90% about your establishing and moving your pivot, and 10% about gaining an advantage without establishing a pivot. The NBA rules are pretty liberal on this, the NCAA...not so much (and to my experience HS leagues typically follow the NCAA). The NCAA is clear that you can't roll over, if you're on your back with possession you can only sit up, otherwise if you are on the ground with possession you MUST initiate the dribble before you establish your pivot.

What is so spectacular about Rondo's play is that not only was it legal with the NBA's more liberal rules, after watching it over and over on SportsCenter it looked like it was legal under college/HS rules. It appeared that he initiated the dribble before he stood up. At any rate, there is no rule that says a player on the ground can't get up with the ball. It is a sports myth. Per my point earlier probably 99% of the time if you are on the ground with possession you will travel under the rules because you gain an advantage or fail to dribble before establishing a pivot, which again makes the 1% of the time it is a clean play that much more impressive.

Tonights game has been straight up fucking terrible when it comes to officiating.... THERE IS NO FUCKING WAY Kendrick Perkins should have gotten that 2nd Technical foul... Hell it wasn't even a foul on the damn play he just poked the ball away from Howard!! What makes it even worse that is 7 Techs on Perk so IF the NBA don't resend that 2nd Tech tonight he is suspended for game 6.... Boston has 4 w/ 3 or more fouls and it dont fucking make things better that Orlando has made 9 damn 3's in the 1st half.... BUT we're ONLY down 8 after all that..... We need a HUGE Second half from Sheed (3 fouls) and Glen Davis (2 fouls)
  • wildcats20
That 2nd T will be rescinded, that was TERRIBLE officiating by Eddie Rush.
  • trackandccrunner
Haha I was just about to start a thread about how terrible the officiating has been in this game. That foul call was kinda bad then the T was just down right uncalled for. But they have been calling terrible fouls on both teams this whole game.

All I know is the Magic are finally starting to hit their 3's just like the Suns did. And I'm glad to see Redick finally playing pretty well even if his defense still is pretty bad. Im sure the Magic wish they could keep him out there more they play a lot better when hes on the floor for some reason.
  • osu45804
Matter of fact BOTH Technicals on Perk have been SHIT
  • wildcats20
Didn't see the first one, so I can't comment. But the 2nd one was a total joke.
  • trackandccrunner
Yeah the 1st one was also bad but you can atleast kinda see why they called although I wouldnt have but the 2nd one was just terrible not even Joey Crawford would have called that shit.
  • Hb31187
First one was a T, 2nd one wasnt.
  • osu45804
League said they are going to take a second look at BOTH Techs and in my opinion if BOTH are resended then I think the official should be suspended for 1 game
