all things Airlines...cheap fares, fees etc.
-
HitsRusMrs. Hits and I are "flyers"....neither one of us likes to waste time driving, so if the trip is longer than 2 -3 hours by car, we are looking to fly.
On the plane at 6AM...on the beach (or Disney) by noon.
Since United dropped hub status for CLE, a number of bargain airlines have moved in, and for our latest trip down south this winter, we took Frontier and Spirit.
Everything on these airlines is ala carte. The fares are cheap, but you get charged for everything, which eats into savings.
Probably the biggest thing is the comfort....the seats were hard....didn't lean back, and the tray tables were the size of I Pads.
The 2 1/2 hour flight to Florida was doable...but I don't think a longer flight would have been tolerable, at least for us 'older' people.
Even with the up charges for baggage, we saved quite a bit....buit have to balance that against comfort. -
like_thatMy flight from DC to Cleveland a few months back was $73 on Frontier.
-
YtowngirlinflaI've used Spirit a bunch of times. Round trip from San Diego to Vegas for $60 a person. But I will say one flight we had the pilot seemed like he was driving like it was stolen. Weather was good but he was all over the place. I don't think I would use Spirit for more than an hour/2 hour flight.

Laley23Spirit can be good for the discount traveler. But be prepared for backfiring. They will cancel flights without warning with no compensation etc. Delays up to 4 hours because they don't have a plane ready. There is a reason they are so cheap. But, if it works out, it's all good.
-
Scarlet_BuckeyeI try to fly United when I can due to that's the program that all my frequent flyer miles are racked up in, but lately (the past 3-4 years) their service (especially CUSTOMER service) has been so terrible that I'm considering just using up any & all miles I have and moving to a different airline (maybe Delta?).
-
GOONx19I took Allegiant to Vegas from Lexington 3 years ago for $200 round trip. Probably the best deal I've had. I've been treated very well by Delta over the years so I prefer them when I can.
-
iclfan2Allegiant has good fares from Akron, ytown, and Pitt to myrtle and some Florida locations.

Delta seems so doggone expensive and my one time I flew with them, our connecting flight was delayed 5 hours. They did give us a $150 travel voucher per person though.GOONx19;1719076 wrote:I took Allegiant to Vegas from Lexington 3 years ago for $200 round trip. Probably the best deal I've had. sportchamppsHow is Frontier were thinking of doing an all inclusive in Punta Cana and their the only direct flight

I like them. They have those TVs on every seat, where they have about 12 live channels for $7. It's good stuff.sportchampps;1719122 wrote:How is Frontier were thinking of doing an all inclusive in Punta Cana and their the only direct flight -
HitsRusI'm not sure if they have TV/movies on all their flights.
I don't remember that as an option on our recent flight to Lauderdale. -

Thats called a good company! And they are gonna be more expensive than your budget airlines. They are still cheaper than American though.HitsRus;1719119 wrote:Delta seems so doggone expensive and my one time I flew with them, our connecting flight was delayed 5 hours. Delta now has a deal with Dish as well. It was great being able to watch Sundays Elite 8 games on my flight. Not every flight, but those with TVs...like_that;1719131 wrote:I like them. They have those TVs on every seat, where they have about 12 live channels for $7. It's good stuff. -
slingshot4everWe are looking to use Spriit from Detroit to Orlando this fall. Flight plus rental car is over 100 cheaper than getting flights (not including car) through airlines found on Expedia.
-
Pick6I signed up for a City AA credit card a few months ago. Spend 3 grand in 3 months and you get 50k Airline miles. Figured it was worth it since they have quite a few flights out of Cleveland/Akron and now own US Airways.

Keep in mind you will have to pay $25 per CARRY-ON bag.slingshot4ever;1719148 wrote:We are looking to use Spriit from Detroit to Orlando this fall. Flight plus rental car is over 100 cheaper than getting flights (not including car) through airlines found on Expedia. -

Including fees for luggage?slingshot4ever;1719148 wrote:We are looking to use Spriit from Detroit to Orlando this fall. Flight plus rental car is over 100 cheaper than getting flights (not including car) through airlines found on Expedia.
When I factor in how much I spend (usually $40) for luggage on spirit I usually end up spending right around where I spend for AA or another airline.
Never had a problem with spirit I just don't think it's that much cheaper unless you don't have to pay for a bag. -
HitsRusSpirit and Frontier let you take a small personal bag a large purse or small knapsack at n/c.A small carry on suitcase is $25 IF YOU PAY FOR IT ONLINE prior to 24 hours to check in.
If you wait till you get to the gate...it's $50. Regular checked luggage is $20 a bag if paid online prior to flight. I think they charge you for seat selection too. -

You got 300 in free shit, why are you holding that against them? Fab4RunnerI am looking for flights to Rapid City, SD for Memorial Day weekend and it's making me want to blow my brains out. Cheapest flights are over $500.

How on earth would you save time flying on trip that's 2-3 hours by car? By the time you drive to the airport, park, check in, depart, arrive, rent a car/get cab, and get to where you are going it takes longer than 3 hours. Plus its usually easier/cheaper to have your own car wherever you are going anyways, unless it's like NYC or something. I usually won't consider flying unless its 5+ hours by car.HitsRus;1718981 wrote:Mrs. Hits and I are "flyers"....neither one of us likes to waste time driving, so if the trip is longer than 2 -3 hours by car, we are looking to fly.

HitsRus^^^ I said we are looking to fly. From a practical standpoint, there are very few places in that 3-5 hour range that we would go. But you are quite right...5 hours is probably closer to it.

Our experience was not pleasant, so the $300 did not make up for lost time. Moreover, while we did get the vouchers promised, it took a lot of hassle...over an hour on the phone, to actually get them.
My main reason to not like Delta is their price is usually not competetitive .... not only with the bargain airlines even including their upcharges,.... but with United. -
AutomatikI entertained the thought of Frontier when going to CO last month. It was by far the cheapest ticket, but when adding all of my bags, checked and carry-on, it was actually more than the next best deal (Delta).
I always try to fly Delta if possible, next is US Airways.
Also, kayak.com is my go to service to book.
Hope this helps. -
QuakerOatsJust booked Frontier - Cleveland to Fort Myers, one-way --- 2 people for a grand total of $164 including checked bags and seat assignments. I had a 22% promo code savings. That is just hard to beat. The return is out of Tampa on Southwest into Pitt, which was $130 each (no baggage/seat fees with them).
