Agree or Disagree: Poor People

Precisely. I think I subscribe to the fact that most people are inherently lazy and resistant to change. And such people do not handle adversity well, which is very different from saying the deck is stacked against them. Opportunity rarely finds people, but rather successful people seek it out. The unsuccessful make excuses - that's an absolute truth, IMO.Pick6;1648145 wrote:ANYONE can graduate high school and ANYONE can go to college. Hold yourself accountable.
One can simply not enter the workforce @18-20 and continue to be ignorant that good work and attendance is required. Some people grow-up and strap-up, while others give-up.
Put another way, most people choose the path of least resistance. The povery "stricken" is not different in that regard from the middle class worker mired in mediocrity - both simply played the hand dealt and went no further because of a lack of competitive desire. It's truthfully an entitlement mentality that one has little to no control over their success. Nobody aspires to or is content to be in the 47%, but most aren't willing to make the commitment to get in the top half....and when it's not given to them, then the game must be rigged. By externalizing success, it's easier to ignore the necessary changes. -
CenterBHSFanI agree.
We as a society are constantly bombarded with better options. Everything from books, pictures, magazines, internet, television, radio. Even the government advertises "We'll pay for your education". All you have to do is walk down any street in any town (even country folk find their way into town once in a while) and see people with better houses, better clothes, better manners, better jobs, etc.) We are constantly bombarded for the need of education. We are constantly bombarded with the messages of "work harder, advance". Well, the best way to get that is through application. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements for education (free education also), job opportunities, job training, etc.
Stop saying "Awww, but people just don't KNOW." You are purposely justifying your own laziness of not wanting to poke the hornet's nest.
If you are dirt poor, it is because it's easier for you to remain so. Period. -

Again, no one should claim to be ignorant of what it takes to be successful - everyone learns that lesson (and sooner, rather than later). It's simply a personal failing to embrace what is required. It's just easier to give up, especially when you can blame someone else.HelloAgain;1648141 wrote: Circumstance has a massive influence on who we are not only in the aggregate, but moment to moment.
I'm seeing survey after survey how millenials want good work-life balance (don't we all!) AND big paychecks....absolutely, utterly delusional. It's that entitlement mentality again, one where people want to be highly compensated for minimal effort. -

I agree 100%. People have developed or in most cases inherited a entitlement mentality. It's true that hard work pays off some people don't want to sweat to get there.CenterBHSFan;1648148 wrote:I agree.

Whether talking about the guy on welfare, or the guy stuck in a dead-end middle-management job....always and everywhere it's because they are waiting for the situation to change rather than working hard to change it.
Like how about the infamous "dropped out of the workforce because they got discouraged looking"....I mean, WTF?!? 6 months or a year or more, how do you just give-up? What else are you doing with your time while everyone else works 40+ hours a week?!? -

This sounds like one of those limiting beliefs you hate. Many people have accomplished this. Shoot for the stars man!gut;1648151 wrote:I'm seeing survey after survey how millenials want good work-life balance (don't we all!) AND big paychecks....absolutely, utterly delusional. -
pmoney25I'm curious as to what is determined as success on this board or what is the definition of a hard worker?

Ironic that the question is posed by a coddled white boy from the suburbs who freely admits he's proud of getting a socialist education and that the only reason he got a job was because of lucky connections and that he gets paid to do nothing and type into excel spreadsheets all day....all while instead he trolls message boards under multiple screen names.sleeper;1648037 wrote:Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:

As if it would matter if they stayed in the workforce in any event. Even counting the people in the workforce there are not enough jobs to go around; let alone jobs that can support a decent standard of living.gut;1648156 wrote:/thread

And hence why the "Just Boostrap it" (TM) argument fails. It cannot be true if it were universal. It cannot be applied categorically in our world.
If everyone took your advice...if everyone was a good, decent, hard-working prudent boot strapper...you would still have millions of people who would be unable to find work and be self-reliant.
There's not enough paid work to go around. And that's just the United States...not even considering the truly destitute poor of the world starving to death this very second.
Shrugging it off as the result of laziness is wishful thinking; our way of dealing with the injustice of the human condition and the indifference of the universe. -
TiernanGen X & Yers particularly expect shit handed to them. They like to talk it up big time and throw around their degrees and technical savvy but when it comes to actually diving in a getting the task done they are pretty much worthless at contributing, but boy do they loooove to suck in on the glory once the job is done.

Yeah, I woke up one day and said "what's the most miserable place on Earth that I can move to?" and since Beirut & Bosnia were too far away, I chose the town I live in. It wasn't like this when I moved here in 2003.DeyDurkie5;1648097 wrote:So you moved to "meth lab central"? -

Sure it can. The economy goes in cycles.....and I thought the economy was doing so well (funny to see your contradict arguments you've defended vigorously in the past because something else got your liberal panties in a bunch).BoatShoes;1648239 wrote: And hence why the "Just Boostrap it" (TM) argument fails. And I was talking about more than just the jobless. What I said applies to many lower income people, including those who have jobs all along and just bitch about not being paid enough.
But the days of the overpaid unskilled worker is over. They can choose to adjust to that reality, or they can bitch and wait for Obamaintervention. I say bring in the Mexicans and deport the worthless, lazy welfare moochers. -

horseshit. The problem in America isn't the lack of opportunity, the problem is the ridiculous amount of debt that higher education imposes on opportunity as well as burdensome regulation. And as we all know, government bureacracy and academia is controlled by conservatives. That was sarcasm, by the way.
People will pay you for work, but businesses are so regulated out the wazoo that simply employing person is a costly endeavor.
I literally ran down a lawnmowing outfit (African-American - shocking!) by our house that we watched mowing the neighbors' lawn when we moved in. Paid him with check, fair price for the work done, don't care if he pays taxes on it. It is a shadow economy, and until our government becomes more efficient, it deserves all of the grief it gets. -

Life is great! Feels good to be rich and successful earned through years of hard work and networking; something the poor, stupid, and liberal will never do. Conservatives don't network that well either. I'm attributing my success to my hard work AND my networking; something a liberal never does and wonders why they remain the bottom of the barrel of society.gut;1648694 wrote:Are you saying liberals don't network? Have you never been in a Starbucks? -
