Bud Selig to pardon Pete Rose?
-
Terry_TateCome on gut, you are looking ridiculous for not addressing anything else that like_that and others have brought up. 17 time all star vs a 4 time pro bowler. That right there should fucking end this discussion.
-
Devils AdvocateI think it's funny that Gut calls people a homer and then serves up this Hines Ward shit.
Why doesn't he just admit that he hates Rose because he is/was a dick and that he bet on baseball? -
TiernanNo Commish will ever step on Bart's grave by pardoning the doofus. Yeah he probably should be in but when Giamanti died so did Roses chances for getting in. Can't say I'm disapointed.
-
SportsAndLadyI also find it funny that Selig has been so stubborn on letting rose in, yet he lifted the lifetime ban on George Steinbrenner who was doing a lot worse than rose did.

He confirmed a few years ago that he did bet on the Reds.SportsAndLady;1628086 wrote:Didn't he bet on like 6 games, and never bet against his team?
it's not like he bet against the reds and then threw the game in order to make a buck.
Not condoning what he did, it was definitely wrong, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world to do. -

Right. But never against the reds right?jmog;1628143 wrote:He confirmed a few years ago that he did bet on the Reds. -

That is why I liked Rose as a player....he was a dick and didn't care. He played the game one way and that was 110% all the time. Not many players run over a catcher in an all-star game just to score a run (still one of the best highlights of any baseball game).Devils Advocate;1628135 wrote:I think it's funny that Gut calls people a homer and then serves up this Hines Ward shit.

Like I said in an earlier post...MLB has given MANY crack heads and coke addicts a second chance...put Rose in the HOF, gambling is legal almost everywhere, drugs are not! -
Devils Advocate
The Rose haters would say that this is just as bad, That if he had money on a game to win that he would do everything in the world to win the game. That is what's comical. Isn't that what a manager is supposed to do? Anybody that knows anything about Pete knows that he absolutely hated to lose.SportsAndLady;1628148 wrote:Right. But never against the reds right? -
TiernanHe'd sell his first born for a dollar. Oh wait his kids pretty much hate him too.

What I find funny is, besides the fact of what you said, he's throwing out the "homer" card when probably a third of the posters on this thread defending Rose are Tribe fans with no dog in this fight. You also notice that the known Steeler fans on this site are pretty much distancing themselves from his argument?Devils Advocate;1628135 wrote:I think it's funny that Gut calls people a homer and then serves up this Hines Ward shit.

No. The manager is supposed to try to win the most games over the course of a season. Using your staff like it's a playoff game seven because you have money on your team affects the next number of games.Devils Advocate;1628164 wrote:That if he had money on a game to win that he would do everything in the world to win the game. I understand that, but you cut off the last part of my quote. This is Pete that we are talking about. He hates losing, and he was never that special of a manager.queencitybuckeye;1628210 wrote:No. The manager is supposed to try to win the most games over the course of a season. Agree with these points, but the larger point remains that betting on a game you're participating in affects the integrity of the game even if you're betting on your team.Devils Advocate;1628213 wrote:I understand that, but you cut off the last part of my quote. I see the point theoretically although in baseball I wonder if from a practical standpoint it matters if Rose was just betting on his team to win. I doubt he would keep a pitcher in longer or otherwise monkey around with the line-up enough that it would make a difference - as opposed to basketball/football where the line means more in gambling and I can see a coach trying to run up the score unnecessarily so to beat the spread. -

His betting quite possibly had no effect, but as much as I normally dislike slippery slope arguments, the "could" here is enough for me.Manhattan Buckeye;1628240 wrote:^^^

Doesn't matter according to the rules.SportsAndLady;1628148 wrote:Right. But never against the reds right? -
Devils AdvocateWe totally agree. But what he did as a manager, had nothing to do with what he did on the field. Put him on the HOF and keep him banned from baseball.

No, in fact I know nothing about baseball in general. How does one figure out batting average? It's a new age stat that everyone uses to measure value....but it confuses me.gut;1628087 wrote:I used their rankings....what's so difficult to understand about 9th in receptions vs. 153rd in batting average??? Do you not understand the difference between a percentage and ranking? -
Ironman92Pete Rose is #1 all-time in reaching base safe at 5,929
Hines Ward is 609th in career yards per catch at 12.1 -
Heretic
Well, as a Pittsburgh homer, it's still pretty easy for me to determine that Ward is Hall of Really Good material and probably the upper tier of that, but that's not the same as Hall of Fame material, which it is obvious that Rose is from his playing career.BR1986FB;1628199 wrote:What I find funny is, besides the fact of what you said, he's throwing out the "homer" card when probably a third of the posters on this thread defending Rose are Tribe fans with no dog in this fight. Arguing that Rose shouldn't be in the Hall due to his gambling is one thing which has led to enough circular arguments here going back to the old Huddle days that I'm still burnt out and bored by that topic. Arguing that he might not deserve to be in based solely on his career playing the game is possibly the most hilarious argument I've seen here in some time. -

This is completely true. I don't like Pete Rose as a person nor do I like him for ruining Ray Fosse's career in an All-Star game. I am definitely not a fan of his.Not many players run over a catcher in an all-star game just to score a run (still one of the best highlights of any baseball game).
But you cannot deny that he played old fashioned hard nose baseball...and you cannot deny that what he did on the baseball field as a player is HoF worthy, 100%.
As I said (or agreed with someone else saying the same thing)....put him in the Hall after he dies. He deserves to be in, but he also deserves not to see it. -

I wasn't talking in terms of the rules. I already acknowledged he broke the rules. I was talking in terms of social public opinion. I would think a lot less of him if he bet on his team to lose than if he bet on his team to win.jmog;1628245 wrote:Doesn't matter according to the rules. -

Considering the HoF is part of baseball, one can not be simultaneously banned from baseball and in the HoF. See Shoeless Joe Jackson as a reference, and for the same infraction.Devils Advocate;1628248 wrote:We totally agree. But what he did as a manager, had nothing to do with what he did on the field.
