Bud Selig to pardon Pete Rose?

TiernanI see where Pete waddled like an oversized penguin onto the field last night in a minor league promo stunt. The depths this man will stoop to for a dollar is shameful.

That's the point....Rose got that record playing 4-5 years longer than he should have. Otherwise it's just longevity stringing together a bunch of good, not great seasaons....very much like a Bettis or Hines Ward.queencitybuckeye;1627092 wrote:That would be a great comparison - if Hines Ward had a few more catches than Jerry Rice.
Take away the hits record - which, again, he got because he played until he was like 50 - and only a Reds fan would cry about Rose not being in the HOF. -

I consider myself a pretty hardcore Reds fan, and IDGAF if Pete sees the HOF or not. -

I am not a refs fan, but you are completely off base on this one. If you look at the all time hits list you would notice most guys (who are HOFers) played the same amount of years or just a bit less. Most HOFers play a little longer than they should, however if you take away his last 5 seasons he still is #2 on the hit list. Not to mention he was an MVP, was in the top 10 for MVP nine other seasons, rookie of the year, 2x gold glove winner, silver slugger winner, and a 17 time all star. He is easily a HOFer. Hines ward and the HOF shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. Horrible comparison.gut;1627204 wrote:That's the point....Rose got that record playing 4-5 years longer than he should have. Doing some very good for a very long time gets you into the record books alot of times.
I dont think he is the best hitter of all time, but he does have the most hits and that has to stand for quite alot.
Hell, Jordan will fall into 4th place in NBA scoring history next season I believe and probably into 5th when Lebron James is done and most consider im the best ever.
Hines Ward.....as a steelers fan I loved watching him play, but do I think he is HoF caliber? To me, the eye test says no. Same with Bettis.
But damn, he is top ten and 1000 catches and Bettis is top 6 all time. Bettis will probably stay top 6. Peterson may catch him. Ward will continue to fall down the list and bettis will stay there and maybe get surpassed by AP because how the game is played.
Not sure I would vote for either one of them if I had a ballot, but the numbers are hard to deny and longevity and performing at a high level does mean something -

It would only be the point if Rose was considered HOF-worthy only due to holding the hit record. 10 200-hit seasons (these are great, not good seasons as you would attempt to claim).
7 time league leader in hits (great, not good)
3 time league batting champion (great, not good)
2 time on base percentage leader (see a pattern emerging?)
10 time top-10 in MVP voting including a win (IOW, one of the top ten position players in the league as voted by a group with a lot of members who loathed the guy)
would make him 1st ballot-worthy if he would have hung it up five years earlier with a "mere" 3700 or so hits.
A longevity-only HOFer? Absurd. He was one of the greatest in the game for the better part of two decades. -
vball10setI'm still lol'ing at the Hines Ward comparison--any cred he may have had is out the window with that comment!

Ok fine....stop him at age 40 and erase his last 6 seasons. That leaves him at only 3697 hits....hardly HOF worthy.gut;1627204 wrote:That's the point....Rose got that record playing 4-5 years longer than he should have. Hines held on 2 years too long (not sure how any of us can say that but we do) ....his next to last year he caught 7 balls and a TD in the Super Bowl....anyways quitting 2 years sooner and he's still a 895 reception/11,000 yards guy....HOF or not he didn't stick around 4-5 extra years to compile statistics. Hell I wanted him the next year to be the 6th receiver and work with the other receivers. Terrible comparison regardlessgut;1627204 wrote:That's the point....Rose got that record playing 4-5 years longer than he should have. To put up his numbers on a team that pretty much relied on the run game for so long was amazing. He also wasnt a ***** and would block downfield.
Most dont know that in college he was less than 100 yards away from rushing, receiving AND passing for 1000 yards in his career. Impressive. His draft stock fell some when it was found out at the combine he didnt have an ACL.. -

Classyposter58Come on folks all 3, Rose, Bettis and Ward deserve to be in the HOF. I love how Hines Ward played the game with such toughness and he seems like a great guy as well so I hope he makes it but unfortunately it's almost impossible for a WR to make it in so it'll be a few years for him most likely

I can probably name 40+ guys who played during ward's career or are currently HOF eligible that should be considered WELL before ward.
The only guy who deserves to be in the HOF from the steelers in the last 10 years is polamalu. I can see the argument for the fat bus too I guess. That's about it. -

With that logic, you might as well throw Amani Toomer in the HOF as well. I know you were like 5 when Hines was in his prime, but I can't recall a season where he was considered a top 5 WR in the NFL. Hell, some of those years he wasn't even the #1 on his OWN TEAM. The media just sucked his dick, because "OMG he plays hard and has 2 rings!!!!!!!!" Not really surprised a simple minded person like you would fall for that shit.classlessdipshit;1627308 wrote:I mean he had a hell of a career Little_That and 6 1000 yard seasons to boot but still he won't get in at least for awhile -

Steroids was terrible to the game. However, betting on games you either play in or coach in absolutely ruins the integrity of the game. While all those that took steroids should probably banned from Cooperstown, saying that steroids is worse for the integrity of the game than gambling on it shows a lack of understanding of the game.ccrunner609;1626716 wrote:Victimless crime. What these steroid users have done to the game is way worse
Also, at the time they both occurred, steroids weren't against the rules, gambling on the game while involved with it had been for many decades. Rose knew that rule 100% and got his punishment. -
