  I don't necessarily agree, and has nothing to do with the topic. Even if "when" is the case, I think it is weak for people to just give up on their beliefs because someone tells them they should.

  Give some examples of the oppression and degradation of Christianity. You won't find many that actually fit what you're saying. Not always getting exactly what you want isn't oppression.
  
  And your assertion that the world is a shittier place now than some imagined past is ridiculous. More people are living decent lives now than probably ever before (by decent I mean access to housing, food, education, etc).
