Does music actually get worse?

I hate country music but I'm digging the Zac brown band with David growl. I like all the tracks they have released on iTunes together.

pop hasn't always sucked it once gave us artists like the beatles.

This is where I disagree with you. If the music was "good", it would be mainstream. I think its just trendy to like music no one has heard of, makes people feel good about themselves when they tell other people about bands they don't know about.

granted I have no background in music, I just like what I hear. and when people play music that is non mainstream but they claim is a good band, I rarely agree.

Name a band or solo artist that released their first record post 2000 that will be considered legendary or great 50 years from now.

1999 Slim Shady LP. But I will give you that one.

I do think the reason people say that is since 2000, Rock music has been put on the back burner. Yes great stuff has been released but this past decade has been the first where Rock at least on the mainstream level is not relevant

His first release does not post-date 2000.

Another one that came to mind was Muse. I don't think they've put out an album I don't like, but that's just me.

I like Muse a lot as does my 7 year old son.

    1) Close enough.
    2) Every other time I hear a muse song, I know that I've heard the rhythm before in previous song.

I'm not a fan of theirs but there is no doubt in my mind Hot Fuss will be highly regarded in 50 years

edit: muse sucks, their shit all sounds the same

I think the Black Keys have a chance to relevant 50 years from now.

I tried to make this point earlier, but you said it much better. It may take some time for a good band to break mainsream, but good music that isn't a "niche" genre will usually become popular eventually.

that's a fucking cop out for people who only want their music prepackaged and spoonfed to them. Go outside your comfort zone and you might discover that you like some music that isn't considered popular

That's just a personal preference thing. Popular music is, by definition, appealing to a broad range of people. What you are talking about is having tastes that most people don't have, that doesn't make your music inherently good or bad, just different. I've explored plenty of music on Pandora, youtube and others and like plenty of music across genres and eras.

Truly good music tends to transcend genres and personal preferences - most people know good music when they hear it, even if it isn't their favorite thing. It's an elitist thing - that your non-popular (and by that, I don't necessarily mean mainstream) music is good just because you like it and think more highly of your own personal tastes.

Musical tastes are very subjective. To claim popular music is all "prepackaged garbage" is both elitist and ignorant. Everyone can find lesser known stuff they like, but that doesn't make the music "good" by any objective standards. And if you look at all the one-hit and one-album wonders out there, there truthfully isn't some magic formula. It is simply less interesting to some because what is broadly appealing is going to have similar qualities.
