Does music actually get worse?

  • Classyposter58
It's actually down currently I think but we're in the midst of a cultural shift. Rock is dead, Hip Hop is dying fast, Pop is garbage, but we see things like Dubstep and Country really beginning to get big. I just don't know if the two new ones are fully into a great era yet, so essentially no genre is in a truly great era which defines the music of our time. But it is noticeable how country is probably the biggest genre in the nation now, 10 years ago almost no one listened to it, now it seems everyone is, even high schoolers. Also so many people wear camo and plaid, wasn't that popular a little while ago either

Nostalgia is definitely a big factor. I remember thinking 80's music kind of sucked (and maybe a lot of it did and still does).

I don't care much for most of the Country music these days, either.

Rock is dead? Country the biggest genre in nation now?

Country has had the largest gains in sales, but I doubt it will ever catch up with rock.

Pop has always been garbage, and I completely disagree on dubstep - from my experience it seems to be losing popularity fast, but overall EDM has remained steady

There are certain rappers today who are still putting out quality stuff. You just have to look harder to find it. My favorite "newer" artists are Childish Gambino, Yelawolf, Wiz Khalifa (just like his laid-back, chill delivery), A.S.A.P Rocky, Kid Cudi (don't care if he's emo) and Schoolboy Q. But, mostly, I listen to the greats from the '90s.

As for today's other music, there is a lot to like. Alternative artists like Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol, The National, Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad and Richard Ashcroft and the United Nations of Sound, as well as Lorde and Lana Del Ray on the female side, are all excellent examples off the top of my head. There is a lot more out there, though.

And then you've got much more modern stuff that wasn't around back in the day. Calvin Harris, Avicii, Deadmau5 and my current favorite group, Salem, out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. They are witch house band and they make awesomely dark, hip-hop and electronic-influenced music.

About music? Well Psalms 150 is all about stringed instruments and drums and King David dancing to music.

Seriously though, a music discussion and that's the best you can do? You wonder why no one puts any merit to anything you post? You don't even follow a logical discussion path.

People can debate the merits of music in the last few decades, but the concept of autotune really messed up today's music. It also was more quaint when there actually was a top 40 played by local radio stations, but that ship has sailed. We are in the Itunes and big money era.

I just find it interesting that science is useful for musical theory but for basing your life on some theory, faith is all you need. LOL

You have obviously never read nor understood a single post of mine if you believe I have not used science in forming my world view.

So, you are wrong again (imagine that).

Not sure if the music overall is worse but less choices of not-so well known bands available on the radio.

Since every radio station in America is owned by one of three companies the variety isn't what it used to be.

    imo.

    Bill Clinton is to blame.

Please explain the science behind your beliefs. Remember, I want scientific evidence that the Earth is 6,000 years old.

Search my posts, you will find evidence posted a number of times.

This is the wrong thread, but why would that stop your illogical progression mister "logic and reason"?

If you have this evidence, you shouldn't just post it on the OC, you should go write another journal article for NASA. LOL

Nor has people's subjective attitudes towards what they consider "shit".
Yeah, "pop" doesn't actually derive its name from "suck". I get that people have different tastes or dislike the so-called "lack of originality" of much of mainstream music - but in fact it's on the radio and sells because most people DO like it. It may not be great music in the sense of meaning, artistry or instrumentals, but the lack thereof doesn't make it crap.

People that crow about how great some artist no one has ever heard of is don't have shitty taste in music, they just don't like what most people do.

Every genre has its music snobs. "P-opera" is a term I think I heard Simon Cowell use to describe popular arias that average people enjoy.

Wait...Country music is just now becoming popular and we never heard it much just 10 or 15 years ago? Cripes where have you been the last 60 or 70 years? lol

The only reason today's "country" seems to be more popular is because it's actually highly-commercial pop/rock music with country overtones and some black cowboy hats. :RpS_w00t:

And because of that the commercial radio industry is capitalizing on it and we hear it being played on a few more OTA radio stations than we used to. This too shall pass.

Is music getting worse? Not necessarily. Music is simply a matter of personal taste.

For example I loathe today's pop, rap, hip hop, alternative, electro-pop, etc. and I have a small tolerance for the aforementioned pop-country.

An eclectic mix of smooth jazz, swing/big band, classic rock, contemporary Christian (queue sleeper), and classic soul/R&B/funk are found in my personal collection. It's just what I prefer.

Wasn't sure if a new thread worthy topic. Kinda fits in with the music getting worse subject - A lot of cool bands no longer get air time. When is the last time you heard these guys on the radio? What station if you've heard them recently?

^ The first song is on our rock radio station at least a couple times a week. I've never heard the second one, though.

Epic used to get regular airplay on 103.9 in Dayton, but then they switched formats and got all shitty.
