Um...NASA had recognized them years ago.vball10set;1833174 wrote:My wife saw Hidden Figures and loved it...however, she had one question--why did it take so long for us (aka America) to discover these smart-as-hell black women who were the literally called 'computers'? You would've thought by now someone would've recognized their contributions to the space program and made it public--I mean, it's not like we're stuck in the 60's...is it?
As Bases linked, the one was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom a couple years ago.
The movie depicting the story just now came out.
Many documentaries and other TV shows have talked about this, recently the show "Timeless" a scifi about time travel had an episode about these "computers".
They most certainly have been recognized, just well known by the mainstream population until probably this movie. -
vball10setThanks, Zunardo & bases_loaded, and reps to you both...can't wait to see the movie myself.

I did read in an article that had her being quoted as saying the racism wasn't as bad as shown in the movie but still did exist. Like you said, they made it more "interesting".Zunardo;1833210 wrote:Good question - as a reasonably well-read guy who read "The Right Stuff" and followed the space program from the 1960's, and who was also unaware of these women until seeing the movie this weekend (we really enjoyed it), I thought of a few reasons.
- institutional racism, by which I mean there are a plethora of blacks in various fields who weren't known about in other facets in our history - this might be the biggest, though.
- the collective faceless machine that is NASA consisted of so many people behind the scenes from 1955 to 1975 that the sheer numbers of talented people who were cogs in the machine don't lend themselves well to publicizing individual or small-group accomplishments, even if they were racial pioneers. Let's face it: we don't know about nerds unless they invent something popular and get to market and sell the rights themselves.
-that Hollywood producers thought the "real" story was so dull that they were forced to invent meaner and more blatantly racist villains than actually existed.
Kinda disappointed to learn that in reality, Dorothy Johnson's white colleagues (when she was detailed as "the computer" in the orbit computation group) pretty much accepted her and respected her work, and that things weren't AS bad as portrayed. The restroom she actually used was a heck of a lot closer, and Jim Parson's character was a fabrication.
Still, a very apt title for the movie - "hidden" no more.
One thing that was not covered in the film was that at that time no women could be engineers, they all had to be "computers". It wasn't as much discriminatory to blacks as it was to women in general. -
SportsAndLadyWasn't going to see this movie in the first place, but definitely won't be now.

Fab4RunnerShe's All That - 10/10. American classic. RIP Paul Walker, who is one of the worst actors of all time.
High Strung - 0/10. Hilariously awful. -

Look, I get that that part of the movie has to be in there, and I'm sure if you CGI it, it takes longer, but at that point, I think it's worth it.
I hope this hurts the movie's bottom line significantly. -

This movie seemed, to me, like what would happen if Limitless was directed by Quentin Tarantino.vball10set;1833605 wrote:Lucy- 6/10...mostly for Scarlet J looking hot -

The whole story from the film's producer. He admits where wrong happened but still calls out where the media got it way wrong.SportsAndLady;1833366 wrote:Wasn't going to see this movie in the first place, but definitely won't be now.
